Just had a lovely 3 night stay at Meathop Fell with my wife and grandaughter.
We had our 3 bikes locked together outside our awning. Putting the bikes on the van when we were leaving this morning, I noticed both tyres on my wife's bike were flat.
Being keen to get on with our journey I didn't check further. When I got home I saw both tyres and inner tubes had 3 inch knife cuts along the sidewalls right against the wheel rim.
No reflection on CMC but it is a shame that such scum do visit their sites.
This was our first time visiting Meathop Fell. We arrived 2 days early as the Troutbeck site had a difficulty with their drains. The wardens at the site were very accommodating and supportive to us. We were surprised at how few pitches were available at 2p.m. We also thought that sites would reduce the amount of pitches taken in relation to being Covid secure. We found the wrist band system challenging at times as there are only three wrist bands allowed at any one time. We felt less pitches available would support the frustration of having to queue. We took our bikes and found a lovely lane outside the campsite that takes you all the way to Grange Over Sands via the seafront and the promenade. Weather was mixed with rain and sunshine. The camp is clean and tidy and well maintained by the wardens.
We stayed 9 nights. Staff very polite and helpful. The site is very nice and quite very secluded with views over the estuary. We had a grass pitch, most of these are on a slope. The site is trying very hard to be Covid secure. Given wrist band to use toilet and shower block with. You put your band on a peg outside to use facility. 3 bands on view means you wait outside, until someone comes out and retrieves their band in order for you to go in. This system is not fool proof, some people spoil it by ignoring system others forget to pick up their bands. On more than one occasion i was stood outside in the rain waiting for the next out when in fact only one person was in There. You may think HOW DIFFICULT CAN THIS BE? Not the sites fault just human behavior. If your concerned about social distancing avoid Winderemere and Bowness on a sunny day its like a scene from Shaun of the dead, no face coverings no social distancing no interest in precautions. Try Coniston much better and lots of space. The Water mill pub at Ings near Kendal offers in house brewed beer and great food. Overall had a good time with helpful staff and clean facilities.
We stayed for 5 nights. Pitches vary in size and many aren’t level. All Covid precautions in place. I had read through the reviews before we made the booking but hadn’t realised how remote this site is, especially if staying in a Motorhome with no tow-car. Walking was mainly on narrow roads, they weren’t too busy, but not ideal. The sand/beach at Grange has danger warnings as there is a lot of mud and sinking sand. Not really suitable for walking on. We walked to the Derby pub and had a couple of drinks. Food looked good and staff and locals were all very friendly. It was around 3 miles distance to anywhere, so it was a good 6 mile round trip to walk anywhere. Am sure if you had bikes or were in a caravan you would be fine, but wasn’t really what we expected after reading all the positive posts.
We spent 4 nights in July at Meathop Fell, second week after opening up from Covid 19 restrictions. Measures in place by The Club and Wardens were sensible and reassuring - plenty of hand sanitizer units around the communal areas and bathroom wrist-band system works well. One slight observation for the restricted bathroom policy would be that you still need to provide ample toilet rolls for full capacity of cubicles being used - on two occasions in the female toilets, there was no toilet roll in 2 of the 3 open cubicles.
The site is in a pleasant, rural and quiet location; much of it is under trees and only a few pitches have views of the Estuary. Sited on the crest of Meathop Fell, this unfortunately means that the majority of the pitches slope in various directions - we saw caravans with A - frames 3 feet off the ground and still not level! Levelling ramps in these circumstances will only help so far. We, however, considered ourselves lucky to secure a pitch in the Eastern part of the site, which was the most level. There are also concrete pitches near to the entry/exit which are perfectly level should you have a larger vehicle. One point to note is that the water pressure is chronically low so filling up a motor home, or an aquaroll, takes an inordinate amount of time - our motorhome took 25 minutes to fill compared with the normal of 5-8 minutes.
There is no public transport within 3 miles of the site; however the road walk into Grange over Sands is quite pleasant in places but be aware of the narrow roads and fast vehicles. 'Economical Taxi' company do offer pick up from the site to the Railway Station in GOS for £7.70 and were readily available. From here, you can travel to Barrow in Furness or Lancaster.
From the site, there is a hotel serving food or just drinks which is very welcoming to Club members - Woodlands Hotel - and just a 5 minutes stroll from the front entrance.
GOS itself is quite nice; lots of cafes which are dog friendly, only one fish and chip shop with limited opening, but a very pretty promenade with a couple of simple cafes. Higginson butchers and pie shop is worth a visit, as is S Cafe and Butterfingers who offer very nice lunches/coffees.
Just spent 4 days in the wake of storm Denis. Although the weather was poor, the site is fantastic for a stay in southern lakes. Great reception when we got there and plenty of very large pitches to choose from. We chose pitch 42 as it had great views across the valley. The shower and toilet block are the best we have seen at any site. Immaculately clean and perfectly kept. A credit to the hard work the wardens didn’t.
Their is a great hotel 5 mins walk that serve great food. We took our westie who was greeted into the bar area.
We will go back, hopefully with better weather, although the rain didn’t detract from what is a great run, clean site. Highly recommend
Good site - as many have already described. Can have no-car days and walk into Grange [and beyond - to Humphrey Head]; or along the coastal path the other way. Outlying fells only 10 minutes away - eg park at Millside for Whitbarrow Fell. Wildlife around - deer in the woods; and owl hooting at night. Nice to be there at quiet time of year. Farm tea shop at Sizeburgh really good - great for children - can see the cows being milked - whilst you enjoy delicious homemade fayre.
The staff are friendly and helpful.
It is open in winter, including the shop.
It takes very big motorhomes (like mine), and the motorhome waste area is easy to access.
The facilities are great, the information room has everything you might need.
The Wifi isn't free (it's the club Wifi) but was fast and worked perfectly the entire week I was there.
And cheaper than most, so great value for money.
Been to this site a couple of times now and it just keeps getting better, lovely and peaceful with very helpful friendly staff.
Only a couple of hours from home and when we left home it was blowing a gale and pouring down, so much so my wife was all for staying at home. After battling the weather to get there we discovered this site was very well sheltered to the point where we could still sit out in the awning that evening.
A perfect peaceful sheltered gem of a site that is handy for motorway or lake district.
My favourite site so far.
We have just had two really good weeks on this fine site again, it’s in a great location with a lot to do and easy access to the lakes, very peaceful site as always and the facility’s are spot on,very clean due to hard working wardens 😉
A special thanks to the warden for the loan of the battery charger, very kind saved calling out green flag !
Thanks Meathop team, helped us have a fantastic relaxing hols
