Time to roll back to previous forum?

it  looks like CC is performing its 'user acceptance' testing of the new forum in the live environment, ie we are testing it (and pointing out the myriad faults) in full public gaze...

this is (or should be) very embarrassing for those concerned, as all this 'testing' (and that is whats being done) should have been completed in a parallel testing environment, and have had a group of 'real' users giving it a damn good stress test for a good while....

im afraid what we have in full view is not fit for purpose and i suggest the CC eats Humble Pie and reverts to the previous forum so that all this work on the new forum can be completed where it should always have been....in private....

attempting to fire fight is always difficult, especially where so many users are bombarding the IT team with so many faults.....repairing these in real time will be difficult and will put the team under more time pressure, time that can be measured by everyone on the forum.

do this in the test environment and roll it out again when its functionality is properly understood and there is a decent team of experienced users helping to test it and sign it off properly....

whichever decision the club makes, i wish them luck, but they have put themselves between a rock and a hard place.....

however, sometimes, we have to admit we got it wrong, big up and get it sorted.....in private.

So you would prefer us to be without a site at all for an unspecified (long) term just because you don't want to help with suggestions for improvements? That sounds a tad selfish to me and hardly practical for the Club after all this site is not just a forum, would you have them take down the whole booking system too surprised

No, Alison, I've not said that at all. The OP refers to reverting back to the existing forum platform which is what I agree with. I haven't said anything about not helping with suggestions or improvements, I don't know where you have got that from, and I haven't referred to the whole site so, I'm sorry but I don't know where you are coming from. Perhaps you should read my post again. What I'm saying is that the new forum should have been tested by end users before it went live and that the CC should now have the grace to take it down, get it fixed, with testing by end users, us the membership, then re-launch it. Meantime, as suggested by the OP, revert back to the original forum.

"........ Having said that, they are doing the right thing by listening to comments made on CT and making decisions based upon their wider experience of the system and deciding the way forward."

I started a thread in October 2013 asking what improvements people would like to see in the CT forum.  I can find my original post, but not the entire discussion.  I put forward 7 suggestions, but over a few days other people's suggestions soon took the number to over 20.

A club staff member (I can't remember who) even commented that the suggestions were very useful and would be passed on to the development team......  where from the action that followed I can only assume that they were binned,

The trouble is that many of the reported issues are platform specific.

If I use the site on my PC using chrome it's pretty good. If I use it on my iPhone with safari it's dreadful.

So I tend to think that the basic framework is there.

Bit more testing with various browsers wouldn't hurt but there's so many out there I'd go for the common ones.

That comment would seem to subscribe to the idea that an iPhone with Safari is an 'uncommon' one then.

I could accept that some geek using an obscure incarnation of Linux with an equally obscure browser having problems, but the main software platforms not being properly supported is indicative of the builders of this website operating outside their comfort zone or level of competence.

Not everyone has access to the latest super duper technological innovations. Some of us don't even know the delights of fast broadband or 4G, or even 3G . We are on 2G in our area. We do have the right browsers and Google Chrome is proving to be successful at the moment.

CY I wasn't suggesting that an iPhone on safari is uncommon. My suggestion was that more testing with various browsers is needed - the commonly used ones first.

On my laptop using Windows 10 and chrome the site zips along, the colours are ok and I'd say tweaks here and there were all that was needed

If I based my assessment on my iPhone experience I'd say it needs a rebuild.

So testing on various platforms is needed to identify where changes need to be made and I've been trying to identify issues with different browsers in my posts.

It does not do that on the iPad brue. However, if you miss spell it does suggest alternatives, which you can accept or reject. Not infallible, but if you miss something and when reading through, think that does not look right. If touched a wrongly spelled word is highlighted in pink and alternatives suggested.

It did do all this on the old version, but some of the things it came up with were incredible. Now it is 100% better.

I also really like that it puts an apostrophe in automatically, for things like don't, as on the iPad this used to involve calling up a second keyboard.

steve, i see nothing different in what you describe as the site spellchecker and what the ipad offes in every other application it supports.....imessage, email, etc....its always corrected spelling (offered alternatives) and inserted apostrophes, well it does on this old ipad2

i certainly dont see this as a CT function...

Apologies Jayess, it was the phrasing. We are in agreement that it should have been thoroughly tested on the major platforms before roll-out.

I don't know who's function it is BB but that aspect never worked properly on the old site. It did on other sites but not on CT. Some of the suggestions were truely staggering. That's on an iPad 3. Although I am doing this as a test on my iphone. Site seems to work well and easy to read, although not sure I like the sideways scrolling, although it is very fluid. Perhaps just a case of getting used to.

However, it is  different matter on a Sony Experia with an old Android OS. On that it is barely usable. So I can understand those with older Android devices saying they are experiencing problems. Although again, everything was easily readable.
