Fantastic Site

Stayed here for 10 days this May. Site is easy to access and on arrival the wardens were very friendly and allowed us to pick our pitch. Site is 2.5 Mls from Woolacombe and 5 Mls from Illfracombe. The walk to Woolacombe is over fields and is a great walk but can be challenging with many stiles and is quite steep coming back. Walk to Illfracombe is on paved old railway track and more straightforward but again steep on return. The site facilities are fantastic and are kept spotless. The site has lots of grass and if you don't like the sound of lawn mowers its maybe not for you. The wardens never stop working to keep this sight pristine. There's lots of great pubs and places within easy driving distance. In 10 days we didn't manage to see it all so we will definitely be back. Oh one final thing it tends to be windy so if you have an air awning like we do take strong pegs and storm ties.

Great Willcot

Great site. Very clean facilities, peaceful (in early May). Wardens were great and very helpful. Would certainly recommend site and we will be going back in the not too distant future.

Great site to stay

We arrived and were greeted by very friendly staff. as the office was just about to close we were told to pitch and tell them the next morning where we were. Very clean facilities and well maintained grounds.  Would definitely recommend them.

Recent stay

Great site, but probably not the one to be on in high season if you like peace and quiet.  Slightly spoilt by frosty reception because we arrived a bit early 11.30 to be precise. As there was only about 15 units occupied at that time wonder how they cope in the summer, as arriving at an exact time or after is not always possible.  Our other negative was the number of seasonal pitches occupied by caravans with no one in them.

Easter at Willingcott

Just spend the Easter Weekend on the site with friends in our motorhomes, weather wasn't great this year but we still had great fun.  You can cycle down to Croyde but it is a climb coming back to the site. We had to walk the steep bit after Georgeham on the way back.  Visited both local pubs, wouldn't rate the Fortesque, the Mill is much nicer. If you exit the site through the back gate you turn right for Fortesque, and left for the Mill.  Probably better going to the Mill at lunch time as you have to walk along the to road to Georgeham then turn right down to the Mill.  The staff Ray, Kevin and their wives were very nice, helpful and polite.  My wife was so pleased when she realised she could order a paper, especially on Sunday.  The site is open but has all the nice things you expect of a CC site. Well done guys for keeping up the standard.

Lovely site

This is a lovely site with great views and walks, nice sheltered pitches when it can get a bit windy, well maintained and pleasant wardens. Probably only little moan would be the toilet and shower block are unbearably hot! Also some dog owners, not always those staying on the site are rather careless over clearing up. I still fail to understand why someone picks up dog mess in a bag then leave it in the bushes!

Woolacombe Beach

Woolacombe beach is excellent for dogs. The first 100 yards are dog free , the next 100 yds are dogs on leads then the next two miles you can let your dog run free. Wonderfull. As it is privately owned it is also very clean and tidy with excellent cafes both ends.

Superb site

We booked for 10 nights and ended up staying for 15, The location is good, close to the coast for beach etc., and half a mile from an A road for exploring the area. Access with a caravan easy following site directions - as it states in the guide use a satnav at your peril !! The site is fantastic, divided up into smaller field areas by banks and hedging,is well drained and undulating with level pitches and hardstands. The grounds are well maintained and the grass short and in good condition. All the block facilities are nearly new, warm, plenty of hot water and clearly maintained with a superlative cleaning regime by staff who are friendly and helpful - the whole place is a credit to them. Very adequate and convenient water and waste disposal points around the site. The only thing that marred our experience was the pile of dog excrement beside our awning one morning as a result of an inconsiderate dog owner! We refer to and have commented on the review entitled "you might need ear defenders" Thanks to all you wardens and helpers at the site who made our holiday special and we hope to see you again !!!!

Super site, super area.

Having spent 11 days here in August, we could not wait to get back for another 4 in October. Site is ideal for visiting Ifracombe, Barnstaple and other towns and villages. Having a large motorhome we relied on busses for longer distances. There is a gate alongside the site giving access to the Tarka Trail which is about 4 miles to Ilfracombe on a disused rail line on a downward sloping metalled road. However, the return walk or bike ride is challenging so the bus from Ilfracombe is very welcome. Close by is another walk across the fields to Mortehoe, a delightful village, then to Woolacombe and a bus stop!. A walking map is available from Reception. The site stocks the essentials (milk, bread etc.) during the summer. Choosing a pitch can be interesting. Located fairly close to the sea, the prevailing wind can be a trial, exacerbated by the height above sea level. Overall, the site is excellent, the wardens a delight, knowledgeable, friendly and justifiably proud of Willingcott.

You might need ear defenders.

A very clean and tidy site, very close to Woolacombe beach which is a fantastic beach, and very dog friendly. Shower block is new, very clean and warm, a pleasure to use. We stayed for 5 nights, and the weather was marvoulous for October. On arriving on site you are greeted by the sign "This is not a dog toilet area" Then the first conversation with the Warden consisted of "please don't allow your dogs on the grass" You are given a key to a gate leading to a dog walk along a solid path, which has white paint markings saying "pick up your dog poo " Along the path there are several circles in white paint, showing where dog poo was left in the past, but no longer exists, someone around must have a severe dislike for dog poo and perhaps dogs, we did not feel very welcome with our dogs at all . We felt the site was more dog tolerant than dog friendly. We spent mornings on Woolacombe beach, and returned to the Campsite early afternoon for lunch and a little quiet time. However 4 hours of solid lawn mowing by a very keen grounds man, with mandatory ear defenders ruined our quiet time, for 3 of our 4 days on site, forcing us to close all our windows as the noise was terrible, I do realise grass has to be cut, but 4 hours each day seems a little too much, so much for a peaceful week ?

Comment from The Club:

Many thanks for your review and we were sorry to read your negative comments concerning dogs on site.  The site has had an issue with members not picking up their dog waste and this has resulted in them receiving numerous complaints from the local residents who have now taken matters into their own hands by spray painting circles on the path.  The rear of the site leads onto the Tarka Trail Path (Sustrans Route 27a and Public footpath) and many people have abandoned their dog waste there as well as leaving it at the front of the site.  This is a continuous problem which means the team there at Willingcott are picking up dog waste on a daily basis.   They are trying hard to work with members and the local residents to resolve this issue amicably and they have displayed temporary reminder notices to pick up your dog waste in an attempt to overcome the problem.  Regarding keeping dogs off the grass the team had been carrying out pitch repairs which meant many areas had fertiliser applied which is why dog owners were told to keep their dogs off the grass for their own health and safety.

Regarding the level of noise from the mowing.  The team work very hard to ensure the site is kept in good condition for everyone to enjoy and at this time of year they are keen to take advantage of any  good weather.  They do try to be mindful of anyone sitting out in their awning and will have a quick chat to explain what they are doing and if needs be will go elsewhere and then return later if possible.   As we are nearing the end of the season the warden was keen to get a final cut in.  The work took approximately 2 hours on 2 days and we apologise for any inconvenience caused whilst this essential maintenance work was carried out.  I hope this helps to address some of your concerns
