Great site

Just spent 3 nights at this wonderful site with the added bonus of the National trust house and cafe. Assistant wardens friendly and very helpfull, doing a great job, site was clean and tidy, toilet block was spotless. The noise from the nearby road was a slight drone but not enough to put us off we will definitely be back. The dog had the best time ever with the walks in the trusts parkland, so glad we didn't let some of the previous comments put us off. Carry on the great service.

Honest and Objective Review - I hope!

Tredegar House is easy to find just off the M4 J28. It sits in adjacent to huge grounds ideal for walking, dog walking and cycling. The site is on two levels and it’s a short but steep incline from the lower level to the toilet block. There is road noise especially at peak times but the website does tell you about this. We stayed on pitch 68 on the lower level. TV reception was excellent and the 3G signal was three bars. I didnt notice it was next to the camping area. There was a tent pitch arrival after we had set up. All was well until the campers went in and out of the site four times between 10pm and midnight with lots of car door banging on departure and return. They were also peeing in the bushes. I told the wardens the next day and the campers were gone sooon after. I have nothing against campers but all site users should show basic standards of behaviour and consideration for others. To be on the safe side I will be using the low number pitches 1 to 20 away from the camping area next time we visit. There’s an ASDA and a McDonalds within walking distance-ish. If you’re buying supplies I’d take the car. We took a taxi for £6 from the site entrance to Newport train station. It cost about £8 for 2 x day returns to Cardiff where we spent a great day seeing the sights, shopping and visiting lovely cafes. Tredegar House was covered by sheeting and we decided against going inside. There’s lots of shops and a couple of cafes in the grounds. The ornamental Lake is a delight to walk around and great for dog walking. This is a popular site with dog walkers so if you’re not a doggy person you might want to book elsewhere. Overall, I’m glad I wasn’t put off by some of the more negative reviews. We had a great time and enjoyed it enough to go back in the future.

Not as convenient as we thought

As a campsite in its own right Tredegar House is a perfectly nice place to stay. It's only a short walk to the house. Not sure why everywhere I go everything is always covered in scaffolding!!! The renovations are nearly finished so that shouldn't be a problem for much longer. There are some interesting gift shops in the Park and a nice cafe. The site is quite wooded with lots of lovely mature trees only problem with this is that if you want to get satellite TV you have to select your pitch carefully, we were lucky we had a nice open aspect pitch. The toilet facilities are fine but just a shame the motorhome service point has not yet been converted to the open grill style so it still requires heavy metal grills to be lifted. Really needs to be more dish washing sinks. WiFi was dire which dropped out a lot of the time. There is always the hum of the motorway which will annoy some but I have to say once in the van we were not really aware of it. For shopping there is a small general store and a fish and chip shop just out the back of the Park near the cafe. About a mile away is a large ASDA supermarket which also does fuel. Our biggest disappointment was that our intention was to use the site for a visit to Cardiff. As motorhomers with a few mobility issues we wanted to use public transport. We only discovered after we arrived that it is a long walk to the bus stop. In the end we voted with our feet and took a taxi (fixed fare) to Newport station and got the train from there which was more relaxed albeit a more expensive option. I am not sure if this is possible but can't the Club negotiate a short cut access onto the road that circumnavigates the site to provide a shorter route to the buses?

Land of the hillside and rain

Wonderful site with fabulous friendly helpful staff Very clean facilities which I was told are about to get a very expensive revamp Only issue was the road noise from the main road but even that wasn't too bad No complaints whatsoever Everywhere was easily accessible Use the Cardiff park and ride Only a fiver Visit Monmouth and go down the wye valley So much to see and do Been there before Will certainly go again and would thoroughly recommend this site

lovely site and great location

Just had a week at this site and can not fault it, it is a good location to everywhere we wanted to go to. Hand no problem with TV resection what so ever, but the directions take you to wrong place and had to type in name of camp site on my my phone in google maps and that took me straight to the door and this has happened on a few sites following club directions

Nice site, shame about road noise and hard pitches

Booked the site for 6 nights as we're visiting out daughter, husband and 3 week old grandson in Caerleon. Location looked very convenient. Site is lovely, settled into the NT park. Warm welcome and easy access to pitches. Unfortunately when we started to pitch our awning we discovered that the hard standings are so badly compacted it's almost impossible to drive in the tent pegs. I use hardened steel pegs with a 2 1/2lb club hammer. The result: bent pegs with the points broken off. Managed to secure enough fixings in the end although most pegs left 4 to 5 inches out of the ground. If we'd had high winds I'm not sure they'd have held. Second problem is the horrendous road noise from the elevated M4 and the adjacent A48. Rush hour in the morning was not enjoyable. A nice site marred by the location and hard standings.

Dog Tired

We stayed at the Tredegar County Park site over the recent bank holiday, our first on a CMC site. We were joined by our son and our young grandsons who had their own camper. A nice site, well spread out and a great team looking after everyone's needs.  Sadly, for us it was the number of dogs and particularly their owners that put a dampener on the weekend due to the incessant barking from some quarters and the number of people that allowed or walked their animals onto vacant grass pitches to urinate etc. One of these pitches being next to my son's camper. One gentleman walked his 3 dogs individually late at night to this particular pitch obviously to avoid using proper location. Had he brought a fourth dog I would have confronted him but all the same not acceptable in my book or, I believe, the club rules. This appears to be an ever increasing issue with camp sites far and wide. I do not dislike dogs just their inconsiderate owners. Not sure how this can improve apart from confining all dog owners to one area, which I accept is highly unlikely.

Ignore the critics!

Some of the feedback was so negative that we very nearly cancelled our booking so as to avoid disappointment. Thank goodness we didn't! Just about all the criticisms and moans were found to be unjustified - what do people expect?? The site is in a fabulous location with direct access to beautiful parklands and the Tredegar. House NT property. No one mentioned the interesting selection of shops in the grounds, nor included the fact that there's a lovely cafe open all day serving a range of light meals and drinks - and dogs are allowed inside. The pitches are very generous in all areas and there's plenty of choice in terms of shady areas from mature trees, or very sunny pitches. We were on a service pitch and there are only 4 of these, so not too much choice, but that wasn't a problem. The toilet and shower block tiles may not be today's colour choice, but they were immaculate at all times of the day and certainly no question of them not being thoroughly cleaned every day. We had taken dvds in case of poor TV reception, but I don't know where on site those who have complained were, because our reception was perfect - and we were able to choose the BBC site from England rather than the Welsh language. As far as the wifi was concerned, it was better than on 4 sites we've been on so far this year - admittedly not superfast fibre, but you could download your newspaper in an acceptable time, and we were also surprised to get enough speed to watch the end of the cricket test match live! The info on this site states quite clearly that the proximity of the M4 means there's some traffic noise, but it was less noticeable than we were expecting. Not sure why one review complained that the grass hadn't been cut - it was certainly all neat and tidy this weekend. So, do be cautious about how much notice you take of some of the reviews. If we had cancelled our booking on the basis of some of them, we'd have missed a treat!

nice site

very nice friendly staff, one of the advantages we like about this site is that you get to choose your own pitch, (its so annoying on sites that tell you where your pitch is), We had NO problem with TV or mobile phone reception at all. One of the downsides of this site is the pitches for awnings are very very hard standing, we bent our hard ground pegs and the awning carpet didn't make much difference on the horrible large hard gravel, it was terrible to walk on.. we go on other (none club sites) that are hard standing and it is rubber matting under grass which is a lot better. The shop isn't very good but there is an Asda with a McDonalds inside, just off the site. There is also a lot of road noise day and night but the staff can't do anything about that. The gate to the park is locked at 8.30pm but you get a key for the padlock. The toilets are closed for cleaning in the morning which we found really odd as a lot of people use the showers/toilets in the morning, afternoon would be better. The site is in a very good location for both Cardiff and Newport, we have stayed here a few times when we visit friends and would definitely return.

Nice site with pleasant wardens

This is a great site in a National Trust location a few miles from Cardiff with it's shops and tourist attractions such as the castle and bay area. Unike previous reviews we had no problems with TV reception using our standard aerial. We also found the site well maintained and certainly no worse than many other sites on the network. WiFi was a bit slow but we were a long way from the repeater. For dog owners, the grounds of Tradegar House are great. Wardens are all very pleasant and toilet/shower facilities clean. For food supplies there is an Asda about 15 mins walk from the site so ideal for motorhomers. For caravan/motorhome sales & accessories, Newport Caravans is only a short drive and they are excellent.
