Inflexible Warden

Site clean and tidy, a proper utopia for retired caravaners who want to sit and relax. NOT great for kids, no play area, no ball games allowed, yes a park 5 mins walk away but you'd not let your kids roam a public park without escorting them, so not an option for parents with younger kids. However Late arrivals are flat turned away, not offered the late arrivals pitch, told to park in the National Trust car park or use the local service station and logged as NO SHOW (So your booking is basically cancelled). Then having to return midday the following day to check in. So if you're going to miss the 8pm check in YOU MUST RING THEM, I can only assume the attitude is because it's a very busy site but a no show may cost you your whole holiday (without ANY concern from the on site Wardens I might add). Very inflexible and not at all understanding to just how far you might have come through bank holiday traffic to be told your holiday "does not exist". Kids were very bored, so tried a little bat and ball by our caravan... told to stop by the warden. (no ball games) So in a nutshell, the site is nice, it's peaceful (little motorway hum but not intrusive), it's harmonious, but ruled like a 1950's hospital. We will not be returning any time soon even though it's very handy for us for mini breaks. I've given a 3 star because of the standard of the site and the facilities, not for the mafia.

Comment from the Club:

Many thanks for your review.  With regards to arrivals on sites after 8pm, we, as a Club do have to consider the comfort and convenience of our members on site. The Club encourages safe and sensible practices on sites and therefore, arrivals after this time can be pitched on the late night arrival area, should the site have one, therefore not disturbing other members already on site. We also have a duty of care to our staff to ensure that they are properly rested between office opening hours, therefore they are only on duty for emergencies after this time. The information regarding arrivals after 8pm is included in the Sites Directory and Handbook. The site staff did try to call you to advise the office would be closing at 8pm and left a message.  It is usual practice, once the office opens at 9am, members who are on the late night arrival area, would go and see the staff in reception, when they would be happy to pitch you on site at this time, however this is not applicable as this site does not have a late night arrival area. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your feedback which has been passes to the Sites Operations team and Regional Manager for their reference..

Fantastic Location in the grounds of a country house

This site is so easy to get to as it is just off the M4, and is very well signposted. The site is tucked away in the corner of a country estate, which is accessible to the site users at all times. Fantastic walks around the lake with our dog at the crack of dawn, during the day and as night was falling. The wardens were efficient and focused more on cleaning than greeting. The showers were warm and there were plenty of service points. There is some noise from the A48, but the birds cover that well. Pitch near the lake so that you are furthest from the road.

Not what we expected

Just returned from a week at the site. We booked a service pitch (Number 3) to make life easier, and with water etc nearby it was as expected. However this particular pitch was in a terrible state. Lots of the gravel had disappeared, so there was a lot of mud on the pitch. It was not possible to park the car on the offside of the van as the edge of the pitch was very muddy so you would always be bringing mud into the van. Similar pitches seemed in a poor state as well. NOT good value for money. The television reception was virtually non existent. We were constantly retuning the set even though we have a tall external aerial. The internal caravan aerial just did not function. Wardens said it was 'patchy'. Did not try Wi Fi but expect it was the same. There was a notice in the toilet block saying it was to be re-furbished in October. Is this just the block or the whole site? Certainly a bag of gravel could easily be put on pitch 3 immediately at little cost. We knew there were bad road works at Junction 28, but did not expect the shambles it appears to be. It is an absolute nightmare trying to navigate around them with or without a caravan. BEWARE! You can use the route through the estate but the exit to the A48 is equally horrific. Found wardens very helpful, and generally doing a good job, but it will be a very long time before we return.

Lovely site but some noise at night

Stayed for 3 nights and found the site, clean and tidy and the wardens pleasant. There prior to Easter and site was very quiet. Ideal for visiting Tredeager House and would recommend this. Asda very near but unfortunately so is the M4. Some traffic noise at night could be a problem for some ( my wife) but I didn't find it a problem myself. Visited Caerleon nearby and enjoyed our visit. Would recommend.

Lovely site but surrounding area bit hectic.

We were due to stay for 4 nights but due to family commitments had to reduce it to 2 nights which allowed it to be a shake-down trip for the start of the season. The site was excellent although our fully-service pitch required an extra long water hose to access the water supply. If you choose a fully-service pitch bring a long hose! The site staff were excellent in every way. It is nothing to do with the Caravan & Motorhome Club or the on-site staff but Tredegar House was closed for filming while we were staying. We only found out on the National Trust website on the first evening, despite visiting NT reception earlier that day and not being told. When we checked with NT reception the next morning they confirmed the closure. I pointed out that nothing had been said the previous day but did not receive an apology for the omission. Poor showing National Trust. (Rant over!) The park is excellent for families and dogs and we were lucky with weather, which was glorious, unlike 4 days later when the snow arrived again! We probably wouldn't visit again because the adjacent road network felt too hectic. There are major road works in progress which probably accentuated the feeling of "busyness" but it is very close to the M4.

Good Site

We use this site as a chance of a quick break away as it is close to home. The site has some good pitches and is set in the country park grounds. We love walking from the site into the Tredegar House grounds with the lake and open fields and play area. Great for dogs and children. Also would be a great stop for anyone wantin to visit Cardiff or as a stopover if your heading to West Wales. A good all round site.

Enjoyed our break

Well just home from Tredegar House site. Thoroughly enjoyed our week. Love wandering around the House gardens. Also really enjoyed our visit to the Welsh National Folk museum Downside was the hardness of the hard standings! Had a real job getting the awning pegs in! So many bent pegs! Be warned. Also we pitched at the top of the site where traffic noise was a little intruding. Pitch at the bottom of the site! Upside we’re the fantastic wardens. Two long served wardens and two new comers who were all really enthusiastic about their job. The site showed it! Aim to go back there again soon!

First time this year

First visit to Tredegar this year, visited twice last year and just love the place. Just off the M4 so very convenient, with local amenities very close and a good base from which to visit many places of interest. Had to cut short our visit this time due to the weather but we will be going back. Friendly helpful staff and spotless site with very clean on-site facilities.

Regular visitor!

Fabulous site to return to following a swap from caravan to motorhome! Ideal for Cardiff and Newport centres, access to M4 excellent and spotless site and facilities. Some traffic noise at this time of year but it's not a reason to avoid the site. A frosty morning provided some spectacular photos of the surrounding countryside and a walk around Tredegar House was wonderful! Would definitely recommend!
