Start Bay holiday

Great site. Follow instructions for approach. Narrow Devon roads OK, just take your time. Lovely towns and villages in easy distance. Good food locally and in walking distance. Had a holiday from supermarkets. Not one visited in room weeks. Nearby farm shop really good for most things. Would recommend to anyone for walking break.

8 Nights at Start Bay

We have just returned after 8 nights at Start bay. My wife and myself and our 5 year old Grandson. Great little site. Very clean, Great wardens. Two good pubs both an easy 5-10 minute walk. Nice farm shop very close by. The last 5 miles from Kingsbridge to the site goes through three villages that have some very tight spots. You need to arrive as advised to avoid leaving members. I left at 7.30am on the Monday morning and had no problem.

Lovely site!

Stayed for just over a week in August in small campervan. Site extremely well maintained, facilities immaculate - close for about 45 mins each morning for cleaning. Yes they are dated but from the earlier reviews I thought they would be older - plenty of showers/toilets. Wardens great! Fish & chip van visits once a week. Portions large and price very reasonable. Friendly farm shop (largest I've ever seen - papers, groceries, butchers etc) with café serving everything from snacks to pub style (but home made) meals with live music some nights and only a 10 min walk - outstanding. 2 pubs 10 mins walk the other direction but didn't visit. One on main road never seemed to be open, one set back was recommended. Told food very good but pricy. Another one 5 mins further on in village. 15-20 min walk to beach and small shop/post office with 1 pub and 1 restaurant. Sampled each, both very good- prices ave £9. Beach is shingle but plenty of parking if you get there before 10.30. Estuary so 'tide' always in. Pay & display about £7 for the day. Large wildlife 'pond' across the way with viewing points for bird spotting. Kingsbridge really lovely. Also has a large Tesco and Morrisons. Large car park by marina as you go in. Beware town is uphill from there. In other direct is Blackpool sands - sandy beach and small shop (pricey!!)Dartmouth a bit further on which is very pretty with few niche shops and lots of places to eat and people watch. Sainsburys here at top of very steep hill (follow signs to Totnes- another good place to visit). Would return to this site. TIP: Public toilets in the area are usually 20p so take change. Sat navs take you down single track roads so take a map and look at the site directions which are more sensible.

Great location

This site is ideally located for Dartmouth, Salcombe and the beautiful south hams countryside and coast. It is a very clean well maintained site with plenty of choice of pitches, mostly hardstanding with wide and long pitches. Also a nice grassed area. The site is surrounded by mature trees and is quiet however the pitches towards the bottom of the site are quietest as there is some road noise closer to the top. I can't really fault this site. Wardens are friendly but the only thing that could be improved on is the toilet/shower block which although clean and well maintained it could do with an update, seen better. The lovely new one at illminster is a good example. There is a poor TV reception so take a coaxial lead to plug into the power points. Take it steady on the roads approaching the site from Kingsbridge. It's tight in places and if you meet the double decker coming the other way it can be awkward but this is the best route in. Don't be tempted to come any other way though as it's even trickier.

Perfect

The wardens at Start Bay are among the best I've ever come across on a Club site. A friendly and very well kept site. Maybe a second shower/toilet block could be built but whose in a rush. Great beaches, pubs and facilities are all but a stones throw away. The drive from Kingsbridge is an experience but should not put you off.

Do Visit This Site......

....if you like a beautiful location within walking distance of a traditional seaside resort with no slot machines or other "entertainment". There's a beachside pub, fantastic coastal walks and a small general store just 20 minutes easy stroll from your van. Less than 10 minutes in the opposite direction takes you on another footpath to Stokenham which has bus stops to Kingsbridge, Dartmouth and Plymouth and a couple of excellent pubs for a swift half or an evening meal. The tip about following the recommended route is a good one as the sat nav delights in sending you and every other vehicle down a series of really narrow Devon lanes. The amount of time wasted stopping and backing up negates the advantage of a shorter route. A final word for the site wardens. They are a really cheerful and helpful group who make a great site even better.

Very helpful warden

We arrived at Start Bay on 8th July and whilst booking in one of the wardens,Tom Unwin noticed we had a flat tyre on one of our caravan wheels. He brought out his electric pump and tried putting air in but discovered the valve had split so air would not stay in. He then found a pitch close to the entrance and put in some more air and then held the valve in place whilst my partner very slowly drove to our pitch to hopefully protect the tyre.He brought us his trolley jack to change the wheel although we decided to call out green flag(who came out in 30 minutes).Tom was so helpful to us and in fact all we needed was a new valve on the tyre so his efforts saved us the cost of a new tyre. The caravan club should be proud that they employ such helpful wardens on their sites and a big thank you to Tom!

We'll be back...

We're new to caravanning and new members of the club. Start Bay is the third site we have stayed at this year and the best by far. The staff were fantastic and surpassed what was a very high standard set at other club sites. The location along the narrow Devon roads needs some towing skill but once there Start Bay is a great location. We'll be back...

Will definitely return

We spent 8 days here this month and had a wonderful time. Wardens are friendly and helpful, site is kept immaculate and location is excellent. Spent every day out exploring different beaches and towns and most local pubs are dog friendly. Cannot wait to go back.
