Great all rounder

As motorhomers we always have to be a bit careful where we stay as we don't like to take the van out once we're parked up. This site ticked all the boxes. We leave here this morning after a great week's holiday having enjoyed lots of relaxation on site but some brilliant walks including a 9 miler along the freshwater lake at Slapton Ley ending at a great pub and enjoying a cider. Incredibly dog friendly and with some good pubs within walkable distance and a great pebbly beach about twenty minutes walk away. There is also a farm shop which sells good local produce and meat for the BBQ, you will be spoil for choice. The crowning glory is the cleanliness of the site itself and lovely, welcoming wardens. One of the best sites I've stayed at for a good while and we will return in the future.

Brilliant location

This site is well up to Caravan Club standards and has a good farm shop, good pubs, beaches and a nature reserve all within walking distance. The grass pitches are larger than the hard standing and much nicer, if you don't mind a slope. The site is pretty and nicely landscaped.

A lovely site

A lovely site in a great location which was up to the usual Caravan Club standards. As has been mentioned, the route recommended by the club is a little narrow in places and could scare those who are less confident, though if you take it slow it's ok. All other routes to the site are a lot worse. We were greeted by friendly wardens and chose a lovely grass pitch in the centre of the site. All grass pitches are on a slope are also a little unlevel side to side, so you may needs levelling blocks. There is a little noise from the road, but it's not too bad. Toilets and showers were always clean. The on site shop also sold the basics. For a bigger shop there is a Morrisons and Tesco 20mins away in Kingsbridge. Location is good, just 15 min walk from the beach. Kingsbridge, Dartmouth and Salcombe are a short drive away. In all a lovely site, though not cheap.

Great club site

This is a great site.  It is in an excellent location for the coast, great walking and places to visit.  It is quiet, clean and the wardens are excellent. What I think you need to know about this site is as follows:  pitches at the bottom of the site enjoy the evening sun, some pitches are small and you will need to park in front of your van, there is minimal phone signal, no TV signal (take a lead as there are TV connecting points with the electric hook ups) and no 3G (the club wifi is reasonably priced and okay for general internet access).  Facilities are excellent, we were there in high season and there were no issues. The site is on the bus route (buses run between Dartmouth and Plymouth) which is ideal for visiting places or walking out and busing back.  Walking on the coastal path is spectacular.  Don't go to this site unless you are confident and competent at towing.  The route in goes through several small villages.  The road is passable but it narrows in many places.

Probably the best CC site we have visited!

If Carlsberg created caravan sites this would be one of them! We have just returned from a fantastic two weeks at Start Bay. it is such a favourite of ours that we visit every year sometimes twice. We arrived a minute or two before 12 noon on the Sunday and were soon set up on a grass pitch. The whole site looked superb, a real credit to the work done by the wardens, Steve and Sue ably assisted by assistants Tom and his wife ( sorry, but her name escapes me). The whole site is well laid out with plenty of room to manoeuvre your caravan or motor home to your chosen pitch. The toilet blocks as always were immaculately clean, and do not suffer from piped music often found in newer ablutions blocks. The site has three pubs, all good, within 10 minutes walk. I particularly enjoy the walk down to the beach every day to get the papers and to go fishing. There is also a well stocked farm shop within seven or eight minutes walk. The walk over the cliffs to Bee Sands, where the Britannia fish shop and cafe are, is a must. Some people complain about the access to the site being tight. It is in a couple of places, but taken gently proves to be no problem. I would suggest that those who complain about it should question themselves about whether or not they should be towing at all. All in all a wonderful site , extremely well run.

A firm favorite

4th time here now, superb as always. Lovely site and wardens, 3 great pubs within walking distance. Half mile walk to beach and a local farm shop just off site. Forget the negative reviews about the narrow roads, just take your time and you won't regret it. Well be back again soon.

THE SEARCH IS OVER

If you are seeking the best site, with the best amenities, friendly wardens and absolutely everything on your doorstep then look no further. Start Bay site is wonderful. We've just had two weeks and we could ask for nothing more. Beautiful well maintained site, five minutes from the beach, pubs and cafes close to hand, dog friendly, and should you tire of your surrounds, within striking distance of many other areas of interest; Kingsbridge, Dartmouth, Salcombe, Brixham, Totnes. Enjoy! And take heed of advice about tight lanes! So worth it!

A BIG FAT THUMBS UP, GRRRRREAT SITE

If there is an award for the friendliest most helpful wardens then the award goes to THE WARDENS OF START BAY. We arrived earlier than what we thought so rang ahead, the wardens couldn't be more helpful, we also had an issue with our charger unit in the caravan and asked if they had a charger, not a problem, they allowed us to use their personal one and came down to help and sort us out, BRILLIANT after a tiring journey. The site is in a stunning sheltered location, is beautifully kept, the toilet block was spotless at all times even thought the site was full to capacity. These wardens worked exceptionally hard to ensure everyone had a great time. Slapton village is a short walk away with a protected foot path from the site, has two great dog friendly pubs that serve really good food, take your camera!  Start bay beach a short drive away and Salcombe a fab day out. Take it easy on the approach on the A379, you'll pass through some tight villages, close your eyes and hope for the best like us and you'll be fine, believe me, it's worth it when you get there. Have fun. X

Loved this site but.....

We stayed on this lovely site last August and tried leaving a review, the site was busy and some pitches are small and cars have to park in front but luckily we got a larger hardstanding. Brilliant location, good pubs in both directions within easy walking distance and farm shop. Love this area, salcombe and dartmouth our favourites. Now the negative, we were taking it steady and even tried to time the double decker bus timetable for when we left after not having a problem arriving, when yes the most stubborn arrogant bus driver came towards us on single file lane, not budging couldnt reverse, traffic behind us, all traffic building behind the bus, ended up using some poor persons house and drive, had to unhook, motor move the van in their drive and 25 mins later after trying to come out eventually continuing. We didnt know whether to laugh or cry and it has put us off returning to what could have been one of our favourite sites!!! Time might heal our memories of the nightmare journey!
