Lovely site, great location, superb CMC staff

We have just returned from a long weekend stay here, and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The site is very well maintained, with clean and warm toilet/shower blocks. You are within easy walking distance of Torcross and also in the other direction a lovely village pub. The CMC route information does mention that after Kingsbridge the road narrows, it certainly does and requires some cautious driving! However, the main reason for writing this review is to say a big thank you to the CMC team on site, especially Chris and Tina, they were both warm, welcoming and cheerful. Chris actually sourced me a replacement gas regulator and fitted it for me, service above and beyond I would say! We hope to return, and strongly recommend the site!

Excellent fortnight for two in motorcaravan

We stayed for two weeks in late October and early November, just before the site closed for the winter. We thoroughly enjoyed it. There is so much to see in the area. We used our bus passes to go to Kingsbridge, Dartmouth and Salcombe. The lanes are very narrow and we wanted someone else to do the driving! We walked to the excellent farm shop cum restaurant most days and just a bit further on is Slapton Ley, Torcross and Slapton Sands with its army tank, a memorial to the many soldiers who lost their lives so tragically rehearsing for the D-Day landings. We plan to return and see some more of the area.

Pleasant stay at Start Bay

We enjoyed a pleasant late season short stay at Start Bay. Very nice site and facilities kept very clean. There is a little road noise if you pitch at the top of the site. We caught the bus from the nearby village, a ten minute walk away, to Dartmouth. It is a nice scenic ride. We walked from the site to Torcross and along the coast path to Beesands. Would not hesitate to visit this site again.

Great Location

Stayed for 5 nights in mid October the site wardens are very busy maintaning this site and a credit to them it was just  immaculate the toilet and shower always clean and fresh as was the whole site pristine and well maintained thank you. The location is stunning as is the whole are of the South Hams most places require a short journey but well worth it omly point i have as have others the nature of the road into Kings bridge beware of oncoming traffic when towing met a Bus in a narrow stretch of road luckily near to a passing but place just enough space.  Thank you to the site wardens.

A great first break with the caravan

We stayed for a week towards the end of September and I can only echo what other people have said. This was our first 'proper' break with our caravan and we thoroughly enjoyed it. There are some narrow roads through the villages but this was not off putting, even for relative newbies like us. We picked (with the help of Tom) pitch 35 which was a good size and very quite. It didn't get the sun later in the afternoon but that was a minor point. I thought the showers / toilet block were excellent and always kept spotless. Some have said they are rather dated. If that's the case I can't wait to see some other sites with newer facilities. There are a couple of pubs within a 10 minute walk, both dog friendly and a great farm shop. The walk to the beach is about 20 - 25 minutes and when the tide is out you can walk around the point to some nice secluded spots where we had a nice picnic and chilled out several times. The wardens were very helpful and friendly and we will certainly be going back as there are so many places to visit on the doorstep. The only issue I had was that somebody decided to leave just after 7am on the Sunday and stopped / started his motorhome no end of times. We were several pitches away and it disturbed us so it can't have been nice for those next to him. Some people have no consideration for others. Roll on next year when we will hopefully return.

Great week at end of Sept.

Had a great week at the end of September. Site excellent and even though we were quite near the road it didn't bother us at all. Wardens excellent and friendly. Last few miles from Kingsbridge getting to the site was a little difficult especially for us caravan 'virgins'. Narrow road in places made even more difficult when facing an oncoming Ambulance on the BLUE ! We had a problem when the caravan 'fell' off the back of the car at the very start of our return journey....however had great support from fellow CC'ers and the AA who got us going again - many thanks to all of them...... After all that the return journey via Kingsbridge seemed relatively easy...... Ho Hum ! Great week - we may be back.

A great site on the Devon Riviera

We recently stayed here for thee weeks. The site has it all. Wonderful location, good pubs within walking distance and the seaside just down the road. Oh and a farm shop. The wardens keep the site immaculate and are very helpful. This part of Devon is amazing. I would recommend walking on the coastal path and the NT sites at Greenway and Coleton Fishacres. Dartmouth is fascinating and if you go to Greenway via Dittisham you summon the ferry by bell! If you have not experienced this part of Devon before get in the car hitch the van and go there now!

A great site in a great area.

We stayed at Start Bay for 5 nights in September. We arrived, having met the double deck bus about two miles before the site. After squeezing into the hedgerow we got through and got to the site to be greeted by the wardens. When I told them about our exploit, they said they should get some " I've met the bus" badges made. The wardens were great. Extremely pleasant, very helpful and they work hard to keep the site in pristine condition. There is a farm shop within easy walking distance of the site which sells all of the things that you could possibly want. It is also a great place to have a coffee. There are several pubs in the area but if you do nothing else while you are here you must visit the Start Bay Inn and partake of the locally caught fish and chips. The beer isn't bad either! Dartmouth, Kingsbridge and Salcombe are all places worth a visit. I've only scored "good for families" as a 3, as we are a retired couple and didn't have our family with us.  We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would have liked to have stayed longer but the site was fully booked, but we'll be back. P.S. We worked out that if we departed the site at 40 minutes past the hour, we would miss the double deck bus completely.

Really enjoyed our stay

Have just returned from 2 weeks on this lovely site. Special mention to Wardens Tom and his wife Alison, wonderful people, caravan club should model their training on this couple.   Being newbies - this was our first trip out in our caravan (having 'upgraded' from a campervan) on arrival the site was understandably busy as it was bank holiday and some of the pitches are tight access, Tom was very helpful, and gave us confidence in ensuring we manoeuvred out new caravan easily into the right position. He always had time to chat and there was always a friendly wave in passing. Thank you Tom and Alison we will always think of you when we visit this site. The site is lovely and kept nice and tidy, some grass pitches in the lower meadow are tight and uneven.  You may like to consider pitches near the road side as it can get a bit noisy.  Facilities always clean though looking a bit dated compared to other sites we have stayed in.  Hopefully the CC will be updating soon as this is a popular site. There is a fish and chip van that's comes on Tuesday's, wardens take newspaper orders, there is also a farm shop with a variety of stock on offer. Travelling - there is only one sensible access via Kingsbridge, the roads are narrow in a couple of the local villages, try to avoid meeting the regular bus!   The local area - beautiful. Dartmouth, Kingsbridge, Salcome, East Portlemouth and of course Slapton Sands (a nice 20ish minute walk from the site) and Blackpool sands.  Lovely fish and chip shop beachside, can't beat freshly cooked fish and chips on the beach.  Once again a big thank you to Tom and Alison.
