Noisy grass cutting mower and neighbours ruined our stay

Up until the Sunday morning, we were having a wonderful weekend. We had dinner on Friday in the Start Point Inn which was delicious, then, on Saturday, we walked to Start Point Lighthouse (5 miles each way) in blistering heat only to find the lighthouse was closed! We enjoyed a lovely barbecue outside the van and went to bed, very, very tired. Sunday morning we were woken up at 6.45am by a neighbour's Diesel engine running, while he hitched up his caravan. 45 minutes he let that bloody engine run! I thought I was going to flip my lid!! I must have eventually fallen asleep after he'd gone, to be woken up by the warden's grass cutting mower at 9.00am! We couldn't believe it! Doesn't this man realise that we have been working hard all week and have come away to get away from alarm clocks and noise! Does this really need to be done at 9am? Could you not leave it until 11am? It's a real shame this happened, as we were thinking about returning, but something needs to be done about the 9am grass cutting before you see us again!

Busy Site

Very well kept site and friendly staff. The approach road can be challenging depending on the time of day, but not the fault of the Club or staff. Patience is a necessity, drivers not looking ahead is biggest problem (not the bus drivers).

One of the best

Very good site with pubs and beach within walking distance. Most pitches decent size and regular buses passing site. Only downside is fact that recommended approach still has several narrow one lane sections which could put nervous drivers [or passengers] off. As you approach from Kingsbridge the entry involves a sharp right hairpin so if possible make wide turn. When walking to pubs or beach there are paths that avoid necessity of walking on road.Still Well worth a visit.

Super star

The roads are narrow, a lottery of what you come across. Caution, slow speed approaching the narrows are required. Look ahead and plan ahead, most narrow stretches have a good eyeline to its end. We arrvd Sunday aimed deliberately for 1300hrs. You do not need to come across the site tipping out at 1200hrs, vice versa we aimed to leave for 1100hrs. I do not know why they don't stagger the arrvl or dep times for this reason. We were lucky a Sunday arrvl and Sat departure caused no issues when towing. A pain, having to use the same narrow roads to get anywhere though. The site is the usual high standard, the loos etc clean and tidy, its a 93 or so pitch site. there did not seem enough facilities for all, but the site works. I never had to wait for the loo, but only three wash up stations did cause at times delays. Its a small and cosey site, but none the less speed demons were out in force. I shall report them next time, I have had enough. Even on a site this small some felt the need for F1 speed, its half term, there were children about!! Dartmouth was worth a visit, go early, parking in town is tight, walk to the front, take the water taxi to the castle and the return £8 for a family of 4 single. The castle is more than it looks we spent a good half day there. The cafe expensive, but plenty of seating to eat your own stuff. Lovely streets and views, some nice shops. We also did Salcome, we parked at the top and walked in. Again a pretty place. One day to Backpool Sands beach(no dogs), not as gravely as the local beach but ok, loos a cafe and shop. Easy parking £5 all day is fair. The lighthouse at Start point is a must. Check the opening times, £3.50 to park all day, £15 for a family tour. We were lucky, it was quiet so got a tour with just us. A great and interesting place, great views, a good picnic and kite flying spot and you can walk from there. Its a very narrow drive but there are enough passing places and handy to the site. The beach local to the site is gravel, steep and a strong under tow can be felt when paddling, 15mins walk from the site. The local shop and post office handy(also by the beach front), the farm shop down the road next to the site ok but pricey, worth a look round. Good beers :) The Start Bay Inn doesn't take bookings, so we dinned at the Old Boat House. the OBH take bookings early on, ideal for families, very family friendly, the Start Bay Inn looks just too big. You can get ice creams on the front, nice and flat easy walking and the beach dog friendly. The village pubs, we only went to the Inn close to the site, all ok, dogs ok. I like the site, a bit of road noise from the boy racers, all campers(bar two) happy and chatty, a good gang on site this week, the wardens were excellent and very supportive. I dont think this is the best family site we have been too location wise, as there is not much close by to do and you face those awful roads. It is handy to do this part of Devon.

Very enjoyable stay

Travelling in a motorhome the access didn't overly challenge us, you just need to be alert & take your time - the bus & delivery vehicles manage. The site itself is a typical layout with some pitches offering more space than others. The wardens were very friendly & helpful, we used the laundry facilities & found them to be very efficient. The site is located between Torcross/pebble beach & Stokenham/village both within a few minutes walk. Start Bay Inn at Torcross is worth a visit as is Church House Inn & the Tradesman Arms in Stokenham. The farm shop/bistro close to the site is much more than a farm shop, you can easily top up your supplies here. The PO at Torcross provides cash withdrawals over the counter for most banks. It's easily possible to walk to other villages via the very quiet B roads/public footpaths (we walked to Kingsbridge 15m round trip). Cycling the area can be challenging due to some long inclines. A great location for dogs too. We would definitely recommend this site, a week in a motorhome if you just want to park up & access the area on foot, a longer stay in a caravan if you want to travel further afield by car.

Lovely site

Lovely site in a great location. The last 6 miles through Chillington and Frogmore are quite tight for a van if you meet anyone. Double decker bus No 3 is to be avoided. Plenty of places to eat within walking distance and a dog friendly beach. Kingsbridge has a Tesco and Morrisons for a good selection of provisions at normal prices. If you have Fish and Chips at the Start Bay Inn, be careful what you order. Large is actually two fish! They also do extra large. The garden centre at Lodiswell do the best cream tea in the Country.

Excellent site

This is the best club site we have visited. It's position between Stokenham and Torcross was excellent, with two excellent pubs in Stokenham, The food in the Church House Inn was superb. The pub in Torcross looking out over the beach was also good. The farm shop close by with it's excellent butchers, and local beers and bread supplied everything you need. This is all within a 10 minute walk. Slapton Leys, the fresh water lake behind the sea provides a wildlife bonanza of freshwater and sea birds in very close proximity. The bus service to Plymouth, Kingsbridge and Dartmouth was very regular and enabled us to travel to all the places we wanted to get to without having to drive. The staff were also superb, very friendly and helpful. The only drawback, the main road from Kingsbridge to Dartmouth is very narrow in places, however the double decker bus manages it every hour. Highly recommend this site.

Beautiful part of the country

This was our first visit to Start Bay, and yes, the final few miles from Kingsbridge are a bit narrow to say the least. However when we got there it was worth it and it has now become one of our favourite sites. Only a short walk from the site to an amazing farm shop, to Torcross beach and in the other direction, the village of Stokenham with lovely pubs with good food. The bus goes right past the site entrance to Dartmouth or Kingsbridge and further afield. The wardens Tina and Chris and the newly appointed assistant wardens Julie and Mark, were so friendly and helpful, thank you. They always seemed to be working and the site was looking fantastic. Already booked a return trip.

Lovely site, A379 very narrow in places.

First the positives. Lovely site, beautifully maintained by an excellent staff. Delightful location near Slapton Sands with the Slapton Lea nature reserve nearby affording excellent walks. The path to Beesands is one of the best walks we have ever done with a fine lunch at the Cricket Pub. The coastal walks around here are splendid and the Start Bay Inn serves good food and first class beer. Unfortunately we grazed the brand new van's wheel on a high kerb at the top end of the site which when we arrived was not too obvious. To his credit the warden sprang into action the following day, repainted it and added a line of cones. Shortly after the regional manager visited and sanctioned further improvements on the bend to mitigate the problem. We have one of the new 8ft wide vans which did not help but the major problem is with the layout with a very high kerb on a bend which drops away. A £90 lesson learned.

Has everything we look for in a campsite

This is a lovely site. Wardens very friendly and hard working. Clean facilities. The site is near pubs, beach and coastal walks which is what we look for in a site as we enjoy walking and relaxing in a nice pub afterwards. Also access to a nature reserve, Slapton Ley, which is where my husband spent time taking lovely photos of wild life, including a fox. There is a nice coastal walk to nearby Beesands where there is a nice little fish restaurant which seemed very popular. Will definitely return to this site.
