Super Site

We recently returned from our 4th visit, the first being 27 yrs ago. The site is lovely, peaceful and in a super location. Access is tricky on the narrow roads from Kingsbridge, but we just go slow and carefully, it is well worth being patient. Some of the pitches feel a tad on the squashy side, but the site was full, so that speaks volumes. The toilet block is old, but immaculately clean. Some children put masses of loo paper down one toilet, but where are the parents? There is the best ever fish n'chips a short walk from the site at Torcross on the sea front, where you can sit outside with the dog. For a super meal where dogs are allowed, try the Kings Arms at Strete, a short drive away, and The Cricketer at Beesands, both with good parking. There are lots of things to see and do for all ages in and around Dartmouth etc. The wardens are the nicest most hard working team you can imagine, we look forwards to returning next year.

Toilets where in a bad state

I have been to this lovely site a couple of times now but never in the school holiday times. I would never go again at this time of year. The main problem was the toilets. The site was full and obviously had quite a number of children who in my opinion where leaving the toilets in an awful state. My husband encountered urine all over the seat and cubicle floor and I saw toilets with faeces in them and others blocked up with toilet paper.

Beautiful Place

We have also just returned from 12 nights at Start Bay I read previous reviews before we booked with regard to the road but found it no problem drivers give & take & in a tourist area caravans & motorhome's are taken in to consideration by all road users. The site itself was very well kept, the showers & toilets although dated compared to other CC site were always clean & tidy despite some less than considerate users. The pitches were spaced out well for the size of the site & I would say ours was almost level, although some others nearer the play area were quite sloping. (we avoided this anyway) Whole area was stunning & we spent a few evenings down on the beach just watching the tide roll in & enjoying the calm. Lastly the wardens were among some of the most helpful & friendly I have met during my years of touring. We would have no hesitation in returning to Start Bay. Don't let reports of the road put you off going You will be missing out !!

Pleasant Site

This site has an easy walk (5 mins) to the beach, where tea rooms and a couple of pubs are located. The pebbly beach was not crowded in any way. The beach drops quite sharply into the sea, but the pebbles are smooth. Surfers seemed to enjoy it. Good location for doing part of the coastal path. In the other direction, a shorter walk gets you into the village of Stokeham. The Church Inn did great food but best to book for a table. Downside to the site was the journey from the Devon highway to the site. The lanes were narrow to VERY narrow, and I wouldn't like 2 caravans to meet. Had to pull in the mirrors on our motorhome several times ! Pitches sloped in many places but the usual CC facilities were great.

3rd trip out !

Prior to booking this site I read all the visitor reviews and was a bit apprehensive as I am 61 years old, a woman! and have only had my 5 berth Caravan since earlier this year .. so the comments about the road in and out worried me a little .. but always prepared to have a go i booked it and am very pleased I did .. yes it was a bit scary when the dustcart came towards me and then the articulated lorry at the bridge from Kingsbridge .. but i made it and was very proud of myself for getting in and out without a scratch .. so pleased don't be put off as Start Bay is a beautiful area and really is worth the journey.

Lovely quiet location

This place was a lovely site, close to local pubs and beaches. The wardens were extremely friendly and made us feel very welcome. It has a lovely shower and toilet block and a small shop on site for those things we forgot. The only down side is the narrow roads on the way from Kingsbridge so it's a little precarious to get to the site. We would certainly not let that stop us from coming again.

Lovely Area

We have just returned from a a wonderful 10 day holiday.Yes we admit the weather was first class, but the wardens and their friendliness make this site. There is so much to see and do,it would take too long to list them all. Do not be put off by the narrow road talk, there are narrow roads throughout Devon and Cornwall, people give and take and are all in the same boat so make allowances. If you eat out do not ignore the Start Bay Pub or The Crab Shell in Kingsbridge. You will also note the site is kept spotless, by the best wardens team we have ever come across!.

Pleasant site near Start Bay.

We enjoyed our visit to Start Bay Caravan Club Site, although we were there when the temperature was upto 27degC, we were lucky to have some trees next to our pitch. We thought that more trees could be planted around the site for other campers to enjoy some shade. The wardens were very pleasant & helpfull. The road from Kingsbridge to the site was the worst we have experienced, even though we have toured all round mid & north Wales. The local council needs to fit traffic lights at at least 2 narrow "tunnels", at which you cannot see the other end or what is coming towards you. I heard several other members who said they would not be returning because of that road. I trust that the Caravan Club with support from the Camping & Caravan Club can bring pressure on the local council to implement these road safety measures.

Whats not to like?

We stayed at this site for the last two weeks of June, as we have every year for the last 5yrs. We call this our spiritual home and it never disappoints. Amazing how we meet the same couples every year, some that have been returning for a lot longer than we have. Yes, there are a lot of pitches in a relatively small site, but it never feels overcrowded. Yes, the approach from Kingsbridge is narrow in places, but nothing that a competent caravanner should worry about. It is the narrow roads that have kept the South Hams relatively undeveloped, and as quiet and peaceful as they are. 3 cracking pubs within walking distance, 2 of them dog friendly, coastal walks, secluded beaches, Devons green lanes, what more do you want? The wardens are lovely, and always helpful. The site is immaculate. Reccomendations??? Fish and Chips from The Start Bay Inn (they do takeaway as well), lunch at The Ferry Inn, Salcombe. Park at Gara Rock and walk down the lane to Millbay, take the ferry accross from East Portlemouth. . Dinner at The Tradesmans Arms.
