not all as it seems

the site is long and narrow, the dog area ? its located on the permisive path that runs right through the site ie (public foot path) there is only the 1 wash block up at reception the site holds 98 vans ? its quite a treck should you be around the pitch's at the bottom as is the water supply and waste area. should it rain as it did for us and if you are on the pitch 63 or the one's on front you will get flooded i have the film and photos and we had no help from the wardens . The path to the beach is actually part of the main road for about 300mtr's . The main road its self is narrow and is national speed limit past the site, and the exit/enterance is quite blind on leaving the site. If you are a motor home the site is perfect for you only because of your vehicle being rigid you will be able to approach from both ends Kingsbridge or Dartmouth, athough there is car and caravans on site because of your overal length (car and van) through the villages you can only approach from Kingsbridge because of your articulation length it can be quite tricky for the uninitiated, there are double decker bus's on route and blind approaches . would i return NO

Would I Come Here Again?

This was our first visit to Start Bay and our first impression was that the site was very crowded. In some areas it resembled a caravan storage site rather than a caravan camping site. A lot of the units were packed in very close together. By the luck of the draw and what was left we managed to get a pitch away from the masses. It was on sloping grass and there are a lot of sloping grass pitches at Start Bay. The problem with sloping grass pitches is when it rains, and it rained a lot when we were there, so much so that the next village along, Chillington, was flooded and cut off for several hours at one point. We had so much rain that when we stood on our groundsheet the water would come up in pools. However, it does drain away and dry off eventually. My wife had a problem with one of the shower cubicles as water from the next cubicle was washing across the floor as there was no gully to take it away. The Start Bay Inn fish and chips are very over-rated. Lovely fish but the chips were frozen and therefore, in our eyes, not real chips. The road from Kingsbridge to the site is an interesting experience. How a road as narrow as this can get an “A” rating is a bit of a mystery. This road could be noisy at times, especially when the local Neanderthals raced their suped-up cars down towards Slapton Sands. After saying all that, would I come here again? I think I probably would. The wardens were lovely, the site was very clean and the scenery is breath-taking and we now know what to expect.

VERY WET START BAY .

This lovely sight had a week of terrible rain (one day of Sun) but the wardens were well organised with hard pitches were possible and very helpful. The site is well located-Torcross and Slapton Sands are a flat easy walk and you can get buses to Dartmouth,Kingsbridge or Plymouth. On Tuesday night a Fish and Chip van arrives and they were excellent. NB.Make sure you follow the directions in the Book as the roads are very narrow -even the recommended way.

Spoiler by the weather

Arrived in the dry and chose a grass pitch but after several days of bad rain the pitch became waterlogged and were unable to move to a hard standing due to lack of availability. Wardens were lovely but decided to leave earlier than originally booked for and went on to our next CC site that had hard standing available.

Another good site

The wardens were so friendly and they could not have been more helpful. Even though we were only staying 2 nights they showed us over 3 pitches. Told us where we could park the motorhome in Kingsbridge although in the end we took the bus.

Nice Site in a lovely area

This site we found to be well looked after by friendly and informative Wardens. he area has some lovely points of interest such as Kingsbridge & the lighthouse at Start Point etc. My only negative is the last 6 miles of the drive to site from Kingsbridge which is "narrow in places" as mentioned in the Handbook, but I don't think it tells an accurate picture of the narrowness of some sections and that you might encounter a double decker buss or HGV going in the opposite direction. At least the return Journey seems easier knowing what you have to encounter or that's how it seemed to me. Would we go again probably yes is down in the area.

Would use this site again

Very friendly and helpful site wardens unfortunately we arrived late afternoon due to being caught in torrential rain storm so only 1pitch left which was on Grass and not possible to level our van as there had been heavy rain making the ground rather soft,  we were only stopping 1night so didn't mind and the warden said he could tow us out if necessary! Nice site well maintained we took in the sites as we were leaving look to be some lovely beaches nearby, will be visiting this site again hopefully for a longer stay.

Super site

Friendly approachable wardens and deputies were very friendly and helpful . Site and facilities were spotless. Couldn't ask for anymore apart from wider roads with the van on and don't use satnav without caravan route mode !!!!

Lovely Site

It was a lovely site but a nightmare to get to and from with a caravan. We had a couple of near misses with commercial vehicles. Also found it a bit risky leaving the site because the main road is quite busy and fast. We had excellent weather with plenty of nice walks in the area. I think the shower and toilet facilities would probably be overloaded in the high season because there is only one toilet block for males and one for female. These are kept spotless by the staff on site who were also very friendly and helpful.

Lovely

Just spent a few days at Start Bay. Lovely location which is a 10 min walk from the local bus stop and pub. Site was well maintained and the wardens were friendly and helpful.
