We stayed at this wonderful site for 5 nights the last week of August. Despite some negative reviews regarding having to drive through an industrial estate, which you barely see. Lovely lakeside walks and great for cycling, the Trans Pennine Trail just outside the site. We cycled along the towpath to Chesterfield taking in the tranquil setting along the way. Another day we cycled up to the Brother Valley Park, which had some great water sports, but the ride wasn't as enjoyable. A bonus having Morrisons within walking distance. Despite not having a children's play area there is a fantastic adventure playground which caters for both younger children as well as older ones by the visitor center. Oh, there's also a cafe with lovely lakeside views.
We will definitely be coming back :-D
Clean & Friendly
The Wardens were very helpful and patient. Local amenities are a 10 minute walk away. I can highly recommend Harley's Pub near Morrisons. Excellent pub food and a 5 * food rating!
The site was very clean and the toilet block was immaculate! It's not very peaceful as there were lots of children on site but to be expected in Summer Holiday season.
August Short Break
As usual the site was spotless with the usual friendly welcome from the Wardens. We live very close to several country parks (within walking and cycling distance) and were expecting something a bit grander here....our fault for not checking the area/park in more detail. The country park was pleasant enough just not very big. Agree that the approach to the site is not the best. There is easy access to the Peak District and the motorway.
Nice couple of days
Lovely site with excellent facilities. It is well placed for walking and cycling and a short walk to shops. The only thing we didn't like was the chemical toilet emptying. It was just a low wall around it and with people eating outside, it made it rather unpleasant. Would have been better with a fence or some sort of screen around it, so this was hidden. Apart from that everything else was good. Would go again but pick our pitch very carefully.
Stop over
Used this site for one night on our way to cheddar. Great location being so close to the motorway. Nice walk around the lake just next to the site.
Lovely site
Stayed for what turned out to be a wet and windy weekend. Very warm welcome from the warden and superb facilities, love the piped music. Spotlessly clean and overall a really superb site. Great flat pitches. I wouldn't agree with the approach to the site being through an industrial site, there are a few industrial units for a couple of hundred yards, but nothing to put anyone off. Its about half an hour from our home and will certainly be a regular weekend break for us in the future.
Excellent site
This is probably the best caravan site (Club or not Club) we have been to.
Everything was just great (even the weather).
We will be back.
Thank you wardens on site.
Noise outside the site
This site was excellent for pitches, facilities and as usual the helpful warden staff. The park and nearby walking trails are great if you take your bikes and if you are a birdwatcher or fisherman the lake next door is perfect.
However, the side of the park we stopped at backed onto the nearby Poolsbrook Park car park.
On two evenings before the car park was locked for the night the local youth in their cars like to 'meet' there and either rev the cars or listen to very noisy music.
I will add on both occasions this noise intrusion lasted for no more than an hour to hour and a half. Shame really as it does not inspire me to return.
One to avoid - if you dont have children
We booked this site at very short notice and, admittedly, with very little research. We arrived to find the site virtually full and had to option of just two pitches - so it is clearly popular. Whilst negotiating the access road the the pitch it became clear that the site was completely overrun with children on bikes, skates and micro scooters and were using the internal roads as a makeshift racetrack. There was little or no control exercised by either the parents or the site wardens to maintain any kind of discipline or good behaviour. During our stay we observed at least three altercations between parents and other site users due to unruly, inconsiderate behaviour. This, along with the generally scruffy location (which you enter through an industrial estate) resulted in our decision to leave earlier than planned and vow never to return. The only positive thing we can state is that the site is within easy reach of Bolsover Castle - which is certainly worth a visit. This is the worst site we have ever experienced in over 20 years caravanning.
Really good site...
Lovely site, right next to the country park. HS pitches all looked perfectly level, grass pitches were fairly level. Facilities block was absolutely immaculate, hot showers and a lovely little bathroom with bath for little children. Fairly peaceful, but of distant traffic noise from M1 but not obtrusive. The country park itself is lovely for a walk round, fairly accessible all way round with a decent pushchair, lots of birds etc.
