A little gem of a site

Our stay at this site was well worth the wait. Ideally situated right next to a country park, was just wanted we needed to walk our dogs before breakfast. The walk around the lake was 1 mile and if you wanted more there were loads of walks criss-crossing the site; we really enjoyed the walk to the canal. There were plenty of country towns surrounding the site and we particularly enjoyed our hike up the trails at Matlock Bath; the views from the top of the gorge were awesome and for those who are unable or just a little lazy there is always the cable car to take you up and down the sides of the gorge. The site was very well looked after and the pitches were immaculate, grass well cut and the wardens were constantly battling the weeds on them; a picture card site. We will certainly paying this site another visit and for sure it has been added to the list of sites we like to visit frequently

Return Visit

We used this site for the first time last year and decided it would be a good stop over point again this year on the way home from the the North East. I had booked a service pitch in order to be certain of a hardstanding. When we arrived there were plenty of empty standard hardstandings and the warden on reception suggested we could change if we wanted which we duly did and saved nearly £8. Good customer service, well done. Only other thing I would add is that I was pleased to see since our last visit the motorhome waste point has been converted to and open grill type which is so much more convenient to use.

Quality site

Been to Poolsbrook many times over the last few years and have always found it to be (in my opinion) the best maintained site in the club network. The wardens David & Jeanette and assistant wardens Andrew &Julie are always approachable, friendly and helpful and work extremely hard to offer spotless facilities at all times. There are lots of walking and cycling routes which run directly from the site and a children’s playground on the adjoining country park. Shop’s are also within walking distance so it’s nice not to have to use the car. All in all an extremely friendly and well run site.

Just Saying....

Finding the site was easy from motorway. Happy Days! Female warden at check in was not at all friendly, in fact I thought we'd upset her just by arriving. Male warden 'Andrew' was friendly and very helpful. Facilities were very clean. The site is eerily quiet with not many children / signs of life around at all. Over zealous enforcement of site one way system for kids on bikes, or anything else with wheels! Kind of got the feeling children were only welcome if they couldn't be seen or heard, as ours were encouraged by the warden to take their bikes to the park, next to a large deep lake, away from the site, which doesn't feel like a safe suggestion as the kids are 11 years old!! If I'm honest this site is for not for families in any way. Which is a little strange as its advertised as being suitable for families. My experience at Poolsbrook has put me off the Caravan and Motorhome Club. This is a shame as for the past 6 years I have used this club for family holidays all over the UK, in fact I've used club sites four times this summer, ( Abbey Wood, Norfolk Broads, Crossways and Centenary Site in the New Forest ) and not once were the rules around the one way system so fiercely reinforced or in fact ever spoken about. We had a very unfortunate incident at this site involving a adult threatening children within our group. A sad and unnecessary affair. As much as I feel Andrew (warden) was very polite and was positive about our kids behaviour , I also feel the threats made towards minors were not at all taken seriously, instead we had to take his advice on the chin and alter our plans to accommodate a difficult and unreasonable man. This incident made a number of us change our behaviour significantly, watch our every move for fear further confrontation and some of us reflected on the choice of club site. Finally a message for the Caravan and Motorhome Club. Deal with the real issues and deal with them well. Be proportionate and treat those who are reasonable fairly. Reasonable, young people including families are the Clubs future and should not be made scape goats to excuse unacceptable behaviour by the few. Stop hiding behind insignificant rules!

Good Site, but poor location

Let's get some perspective here. The site is built on reclaimed land from an old working pit and they have done a great job of the reclamation. The process of reclamation will take a good deal longer before the trees fully grow. Although it is claimed as a 'park' it can't match the scale and size of (say) a Chatsworth - but then again many don't. It looked a bit scruffy this weekend. The site layout shows that the designers had a blank canvas in determining the layout and, in time, the trees will grow and hide some of the nearby eyesores. There is a lot on information on the ecology of the site and the area to the CAMC site has a lake and a hiking trail. So far so good. The facilities are some of the best I have seen on any site and centrally located. The site is kept clean and tidy. So back to the reclamation - there are Industrial Estates right next door to the site. Not perhaps the most appealing welcome, Add to that the 33Kv pylons running overhead (but not over the CAMC site itself), there is a distinct air of post-industrial chic about this place. The nearest pub serves cheap beer (i'm told) and allows dogs but does not serve food. Didn't look appealing from the outside. The nearest one that serves food doesn't allow dogs (fair enough). There is little in the town to attract you in and certainly no pleasant walks aside from the one around the lake or on the trail. As as stop-off from the M1 this set works well, very close indeed but the surroundings to this site and the lack of anything decent to walk to (recreation trails apart) means that, for us, we will not return here.

Great site for walking and cycling

Just stayed for a couple of nights midweek. Relatively quiet and plenty of pitches to choose from. Staff very friendly and helpful (despite previous reviews!). Site very well maintained and spotless toilet block. Access to walking and cycling trails literally on your doorstep. The country park is but a few steps away and makes for a pleasant stroll. Cannot fault the site or its location, look forward to our return.

Great site for dogs

We're relatively new to caravanning but found this to be one of the best sites we've been to. We took our dogs and this is probably one of the best places to take dogs to, the walks around the outside of the site are great. Staff were pleasant and really helpful, the toilet block was very clean and tidy at all times, found the cubicles with just a sink in a little strange at first but can see the logic. When the block was closed for cleaning they have a "Service toilet" available. Thanks to all the staff for a great stay, only three days but nice all the same. Good base for Peak district, had a lovely trip out to Bakewell and Chatsworth. I find the review by Jane below a little at odds with our experience but each to their own, we enjoyed ourselves (I have only just seen it as I was finishing my review so laughed as it seems to be the polar opposite of our experience).

Expensive site with very strict wardens

Visited this site last week with our grandson, site was quite busy and there were plenty of children riding around on bikes and teenage girls whizzing around on roller blades, however we were told in no uncertain terms could my grandson use his new hoverboard, I did ask what the difference was between that and a bike or roller blades but was simply told those were the rules and we had to abide by them, as we had been told 3 times!!! (which we hadn't) so one unhappy young man !!! Day two we tried to use the toilets at around 9.30am and told they were all closed as some part of the drain was blocked. A plumber was in attendance. We had not been made aware of this, the wardens didn't come around the site to warn people, did not leave notices around the site, no notification at all. My husband was simply told "that he would have to use his own unit" ! He returned later and the plumber told him of course he could use the service toilet!! We paid what I think is overpriced to ensure we had decent facilities. Also if you want to walk your dogs off lead don't visit Poolsbank as they have to be on a lead on the country park and around the lake. Won't be visiting again.

Good site but expensive

A good site with large level pitches. Was VERY disappointed with the welcome from the warden, as I paid, she was unwelcoming and was rude towards me when I went to pay with my overseas credit card as it required a signature ( not a PIN number ). On the subject of money the site seemed expensive compared to other club sites. Once set up etc.. We found the assistant wardens were fantastic and were very apologetic about the welcome I had received. Given how new the site is the toilet block appears not to be lasting well. A good site that should be handed over to the assistant wardens to run.

FANTASTIC SITE

What a lovely site. It was a pleasure to be there - in fact we were there twice in two weeks. The assistant wardens were very welcoming on arrival and very friendly during both our stays. The pitches both grass and hard standing were very good and the whole site was kept well maintained and clean. The walks around the area were good, but it was good sometimes to get back to the peace and quiet for a rest. Would highly recommend this site.
