Great Site

We stayed 1 night here it's in the heart of the town next to the rugby club, there's a co-op at the end of the road, usual CMC standard of spotless you need a barrier fob to get in and out, wardens fab, facilities great the Ship inn is reasonable prices, there is a small dog walk on site but as there were wild rabbits I choose to walk on the road

Great Location

We stayed for 8 nights in June / July 2019. The site is located actually in Melrose within easy walking distance of shops and Melrose Abbey (a must see). It was a little busy when we arrived, with 2 units ahead of us. Despite the signs asking arrivals to stay with their unit until they reach the front of the queue, the Dutch (non-members) in front of us didn't see the sign and so a degree of chaos was caused. Our welcome was amongst the best we've experienced - very friendly and helpful. We found a pitch that backed onto the adjacent tennis courts - the trade off for having a larger pitch are occasional tennis balls over the hedge. We did notice that some of the pitches were a little small and it seems to be used as a transit stop for motor homers heading to / from the more popular areas of Scotland. Here's a word of advice.... stay here -there's plenty to do and the scenery is amazing. the loos follow the traditional CAMC layout, perfectly clean and serviceable, but showing their age in a few places with curious little chips in the laminate walls. Bu orders of magnitude better than the commercial site we'd arrived from. Our week was a little noisy as the main road that runs along the back of the site was being rebuilt. There's nothing that can be done about that - and there was some noise late into Saturday night from the Rugby Club across the road. Pity we weren't there 2 weeks earlier as we'd have had a free concert by the Proclaimers (especially appropriate as we were 500 miles from home). Overall, a great site in a great location with enough stuff to do around to keep you busy for 2 weeks. We left with reluctance to come home.

  • Melrose receives enough glowing reviews for it to be barely necessary to add another; it is a site with one huge positive – it’s location in Melrose allowing very easy access to the shops, eateries and attractions of the town with only a few minutes’ walk. The local Co-Op, a decent size for a small town, is on the door step; the location is excellent, especially for motorhomes. Advantages like this tend to override the negatives.
  • Another plus for motorhomers is the nearby Tweedbank station a little over 1½ miles distant (not 3 miles as the site leaflet states). There are buses, an easy cycle route (route 1 – the option I chose with cycle racks at the station) and walking takes about 30 minutes. Trains go to Edinburgh every half hour.
  • The negatives: the site is tired and dated and I thought the pitches unusually small. Both caravans that occupied the next pitch to myself, during my stay, found it necessary to park their car partly on the grass strip between pitches. Awning’s extended to the very edge of the other side of the pitch and guy ropes over it. It gave the place a cluttered, busy feel. The pitches were tatty and there is unquestionably a need for upgrading. Possibly there is a reason money is not spent here – a lease of uncertain length perhaps – but, if not, some money should be allocated.
  • I had a service pitch. This does the job, and I was perfectly happy, but, again, the facility is of great age compared to modern service pitches. I also noted that the standard pitch opposite was about a metre wider – odd priorities I thought.
  • Melrose Abbey is really interesting and there is a pleasant riverside walk and a few nice shops; otherwise I thought Melrose was nothing singular or exceptional, less interesting than other border towns that I have visited.
  • One other thing: I was really encouraged to see a sign at the entrance asking people to stay with their outfit until they reach the front of the queue. I have never seen this before although I have long believed that all sites should this have this policy (and rigorously apply it). Some sites institute such a policy on an ad hoc basis when busy with a warden organising things. Otherwise one has the frustration, when booking in, of people not at the front of the queue impatiently getting out of their car or van and going into reception to book in thus causing big gaps and an ever lengthening queue at busy times - sometimes backing up onto public roads.

These have to be 2 of the top wardens !!!

We try to visit this site 2 times a year and have been doing so for a long time. Each time we go we are always pleased to see John and Linda the wardens are still there as they have got to be up there with the best of them. The site is only 2 minute walk from town centre and there are great walks by the river , on the old road to St Boswells and the road which goes to the old roman fort site which is closed to traffic, so dogs can be safely let off the lead.

Great site especially in a motorhome.

An excellent site especially when in a motorhome. Minutes into town and a coop on the doorstep. Lovely town with bakers and deli's plus a mix of others as well as places to eat. The wardens were the relief wardens. They were lovely and had to deal with drain blockages which they probably shouldnt have had to deal with as it had been a problem before, but they did so as best they could. Well done to them.

Lovely location

We stayed at Melrose for 9 nights. The wardens were excellent and the site clean. A short walk into the town centre where there are plenty of places to eat, in or out. The amenities were clean but in need of up dating. The washing up area needs to be refurbished, perhaps enclosed as although it was June when we were there, the cool wind made sure you did not linger to long. Martins butchers shop at the top of the main street is highly recommended. I purchased wifi time simply to monitor my security at home following a scare earlier in the year whilst we were away. I paid for 7 days. We visit 4 independent sites during the year and each is a serviced pitch, including electric, showers etc and free wifi. The fees are between £26 & £30 a night for 2 adults. All the sites are well cared for and clean. The fees charged by them make the club pricing a bit expensive, considering a serviced pitch and wifi are extra.

A tidy site

A tidy site run by tidy-minded wardens who are obviously very keen gardeners. The floral displays were magnificent. The site is very well situated for walking into Melrose and along the River Tweed. However, the dog walk on site is poor with a gravel track going around a grassy area which perhaps could have been used for an off-lead caper but the signs asked that dogs be kept on a lead, which we did. The nearest off lead walk is a good 10 to 15 minutes across municipal playing fields and through a park to the River Tweed - lovely when you get there. If you have a dog and are looking for a dog friendly outing, Abbotsford, the home of Sir Walter Scott is a joy. They really do welcome dogs in the grounds (not in the house, fair enough), the shop and the café on a sheltered balcony. There are also lovely walks from the house along the river Tweed.

A lovely site

This is one of our favourite sites. Clean facilities, friendly staff, on the edge of a lovely small town. Great dog walks.

Brilliantly located site

Only stayed one night on way to Loch Lomond, but what a little gem being so close to town. The wardens are so friendly and work hard to keep the site looking perfect. The facilities were easy to use and the toilets and shower were spotless. We have put this site on a list to visit again!

Great site, right in town

Compact site, but still with good sized pitches, and lots of screening hedges. Stayed here for 3 nights (2nd week in May), started with two separate bookings as no single pitch type was available for all 3 nights when we booked. Warden jumped through hoops to combine our two booking so that we did not have to move pitch during our stay. Every kind of shop, restaurant & pub you could want is withing easy walking distance, and there are lots of signed walking trails around too. As it is right in town, there is a little background noise, but nothing intrusive. Will be back for sure! As always on CAMC sites the site was well kept with immaculate facilities.
