Ageing Old Dear

Have been to LMP many times, at least once a year for the last 5/6 years. Site enjoys a great location for many things as others have said, and facilities although solid and clean with no damage are slightly dated. This poses no problem other than aesthetics however, unlike the other areas I had issue with last week. Only minor issues admittedly, but still not akin to usual CC standards I feel. Firstly, I fully agree with others that the access road has been deteriorating slowly for the last few years and is a relatively simple win to repair. Secondly, the attitude of the wardens was clearly a good cop/bad cop. Female warden was great, very helpful when I rang to ask if we could book an extra night, but admittedly would arrive around 8pm. She offered to amend my booking for me and just to ring the bell when we got there and all would be well. On ringing back to confirm a few minutes later, the 'bad cop' answered. I understand he might disagree with his helpful and professional wife not be happy but felt his customer care attitude was very poor in how he delivered the message. From asking a simple question, I now know that over Winter the site is just a 'one couple site' and at 8 pm the site suddenly becomes very unsafe to be out on and also that wardens are only paid for 42 hours per week. I appreciate that he wanted to observe strict standards however, left our booking intact and even found myself apologising for asking a question that a few minutes earlier was perfectly acceptable and agreed! When our friends arrived, ahead of us on the day however, the warden commented that they were with us - the people that wanted to arrive at 'some unearthly hour'. Not so keen to maintain strict standards when it comes to data protection strangely. Luckily I haven't lodged a formal complaint as I don't feel quite the same and like to maintain a modicum of flexibility. And we had already advised our friends of his and laughed at the pomposity earlier!

Not CC usual standard

The site was very clean and tidy, is in a good location, only 5 mins. drive from Chirk and 2 mins from Chirk castle. However, the approach road is riddled with pot holes, making the drive in quite uncomfortable. The toilet/shower block is clean but looking very tired and worn, an upgrade is overdue.

Pros: great for walkers Cons: access road

Access is easy except the 200 yard link from the road to the site which is badly potholed and could be patched up easily. 24/7 noise from the chipboard factory half a mile away. This noise is a constant sound which doesn’t change so you get used to it quickly and it didn’t disturb us at all. In fact it blanked out other distant noises so in a way the site seemed quiet when you consider how close it is to civilisation. You get occasional smells of chocolate from the chocolate factory half a mile away. Neither the smell nor noise would put us off visiting the site again. Site is in a great location for walkers. The canal is 5 minutes’ walk from the site entrance. The world heritage Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is 3 miles along the towpath: a good half day walk. Llangollen canal starts 100 yards after the aqueduct. The site is on the edge of the National Trust Chirk Castle parkland with miles of walks. The railway station is 5 minutes’ walk from the site (good sized free carpark with through services to Chester, Wrexham, Telford, Shrewsbury, Wolverhampton, Birmingham and some services along the entire North Wales coast to Holyhead). Chirk is an attractive small town about 10 minutes’ walk from the site. This is the sort of site we prefer out of season. We’ll definitely go again. Didn’t use the toilet block.

A Good Week

Having visited the site on a number of occasions in summer and winter months , I have always found the site to be nice and peaceful.  I notice there have some comments regarding the access road which does have a number of potholes , yes these do need sorting but by looking ahead it is possible not to hit these , the comments regarding the tiolet blocks I personally find strange , yes they may not be of the latest design but I have always found them clean and warm and have never had a problem with them not working. The site is very quite ( owls hooting at night ) , chirk has a number of shops ( the butcher and Green grocer are good ) , there are plenty of walks nearby and Chester is nice for a day trip ( £16:80 for 2 Adults return from chirk station ). A lovely site for a nice quite break , summer or winter.

A lady in waiting

This is a lovely small peaceful site well situated for the castle and local surroundings. I would love to visit again, the wardens were lovely but I titled this review because the showers are very poor on site when working and in need of updating. ps watch out for the potholes. Sorry CC but expect better from you.

Great site but....

We've stayed at the site before but do detect a lack of investment. Others have commented about the approach road and showers being in need of upgrading and I can only endorse that. The constant rumble of local industry is noticeable but not intrusive. On the plus side, the location is great for exploring the countryside with great walks up to the castle and along the canal. Llangollen is not too far to cycle even for those l;et fit (like me). The canal makes a scenic (and level) cycle route. Come on CC, put some money into the site before the reviews put people off.

Tired site

We regularly use this site. Over the last few years the access road has deteriorated and is now disgraceful. The toilet block is very dated, worn out and must be very difficult for the Warden to maintain. There does not appear to be any capital expenditure here for years, but planning was applied for some 2 years ago for an extension. With the prices going up to £25 at Easter (2 adults) I would expect some considerable disquiet. We have used Private sites of late and must say the CC sites like this one don't meet the required standard any more. The noise from the Krooberg site is also more noticeable now.

Great location, slightly below par facilities

We just spent February half term week in the site and have to start by saying it's an amazing location. Easy walk into the town, up to Chirk castle, to the train station  (with access to Chester, Birmingham, Cardiff and more ) or to local walks. Depending on the wind you'll either get the divine smell of Cadbury hot chocolate or MDF being made  (I like both!). My only niggle with the site is the facility block. Washing up is outdoors and the toilet blocks only have 4 shower cubicles. Now don't get me wrong, the facilities are still really good, but let's face it CC club sites usually have amazing facilities whereas these are just good. I'll definitely be going again but feel this site needs to be put on the "needs a refurb list"

Chocolate

Its our first year with the caravan club though I had heard plenty about Lady Margaret's, I can confirm all was as hoped, the check in was quick and painless the pitches easy to access and the facilities first class. For the pitch price great value and will certainly be going back again. We look forward to our next visit
