Lovely visit but.........

We have just spent 7 days at Hillhead, our third visit. The wardens were as helpful as usual. Although the site was full it never felt overcrowded.  The facilities were spotless but starting to show there age and an upgrade is necessary. The Internet connection was a constant agrivation with incredibly slow speed ( 0.49) when a signal was available! The dog walk is excellent with plenty of room for everybody. I would recommend the site even with the minor faults.

Hillhead has it all!!

Just got back from a lovely weekend break at Hillhead, and we were thoroughly impressed! Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted and given a map of the site. Our pitch was well located, with water access nearby (inc the usual waste water disposal, bins and drinking water). We found the dog walk area to be very clean and of a good size- and the views were gorgeous! My son really enjoyed the playground and the outdoor pool (there's both an adult and children's pool which are both heated!). The on site shop is well stocked and fairly priced also. We didn't eat at the restaurant so cannot comment, however it smelt nice (if that helps?!). The site is well located, with Brixham Harbour only a 10 minute drive away- and Torquay and Paignton nearby also. We had a drive up to Berry Head also, which has gorgeous views, dog walking areas and a café (very expensive though!). All in all, we would definitely return to Hillhead- and cannot wait to do so!

"You forgot to file your paperwork"...

So firstly the good: Spotless toilets and showers (can't understand the previous reviewer - must have had different showers than I used!) TV reception - we used a booster and it was fine but to be fair, it was fine without. The top field is windy and the lower pitches tend to be more sheltered Wardens work tirelessly to keep the grass mowed, hedges trimmed, looks fab. Dog walk - spotless- well done dog owners for picking up doggy poo! Play area and play field - kept clean and tidy and a great addition for little ones.  Swimming pool - lovely and warm and very clean - honestly in the sun, it gives a lot of 5 star hotel pools a run for their money.  Shop - my god! where do they keep the stock - they have literally everything! Wind breakers, dog leads, brake lights - really lovely staff too.  Dartmouth - nice for a day out and a walk looking at all the boats. Do venture to the three great coves in the area - but not if you are unfit! - Scabbacombe Sands - Man Sands and St Mary's Bay - dog friendly, lovely and quiet but one hell of a trek up hill backwards! Berry Head - a nice 30 min walk from Brixham Harbour and the harbour itself has lovely fish restaurants and takeaways. Get the bus in from the site and back or go at night for a meal and a taxi back is £7.50

Showers

We've been going to Hillhead for years and it's one of my favourite sites, but, this year I noticed the showers were showing signs of age and the grouting round the shower base had black mold. Only used them the once, we used the shower in the van for the rest of the holiday. Considering the price charged for ths site I would think the caravan club should be thinking of refitting. The other thing was the tv reception, we plugged into site tv ariel and were unable to get bbc, my husband mentioned this to the warden and was told the reception is bad down there. After a couple of days he decided to try our onboard ariel and hey presto bbc, now somebody is telling porkies and the system needs an overhaul. It's such a fabulous place have they got just a little bit complacent.

Top Notch CC Site

We just had a fabulous 5 nights at Hillhead (the weather was brilliant so that helped!). Been many times before so knew what to expect. Had a choice of pitches, including hardstandings, and managed to bag a nice secluded pitch up 'the avenue' with a sea glimpse. Great facilities as always with the CC and never had to queue once for a shower. Well stocked shop, not overpriced and bar/restaurant on site (didn't use this time). The excellent wardens recommended a local Indian takeaway that delivered to the site and it was brilliant. Lots to see and do in the area without moving our motorhome (which makes it a perfect site for us). Bus stop to either Kingswear or Brixham right outside the site and a good reliable service too. Expensive unless you buy the day rider ticket at £4.90 each for unlimited travel within the whole of the Torbay area. We also bought a Jubilee Pass for 3 days unlimited travel on the steam train from Kingswear, the ferry over to Dartmouth and back, and various river and sea cruises. At £37 each for the 3 days we found it fantastic value for money. We found it easy to fill our days with plenty to see and do directly from the site and would highly recommend this site. The only thing we think the CC could improve on would be to offer the facility to book your choice of pitch, ie grass or hardstanding, as they do on a few sites.

We Keep Going Back - Enough Said??

We only booked in for 3 days but stayed for 6.  This site has something for everyone, particularly if you have kids, pool arcade play area.  Haven't used the bar so can't comment but what else could better if that's your bag.  The shop isn't over priced as most commerical site stores are run by Dick Turpin.  The bus service is spot on, and if you are one of the few that pay _ get a roamer + quid for the dog.  Dartmouth has to be my favourite and Kingsbridge if worth a visit,  although the bus is a white knuckle ride ??.  Brixham is very handy and probably the best of Torbay now.  We know the package holidays has killed most UK resorts for investment and Torquay proves this, a bit like Birmingham on Sea but without the bull ring!  Still worth a trip though and use the ferry, a bargain at £3 return from Brixham.  Best crab butties are either claws if you want to eat of a plate or the crab pot? In Dartmouth,  made to order for £5 and packed with fresh crab.  Dog owners have a beer in the Royal Castle Hotel ~ the place less the top restaurant is dog friendly and about £10 for 2 drinks if the Mrs drinks a large Pinot??. The walk to the beach is worth it but take a flask etc as there is nothing else there and it is arduous - there is a national trust car park half way but you Will need to ask how to find it.  We always walk and allow about 3 hours for a bimble pace and an hour on the beach!  Thanks  again wardens!

Blooming fabulous holiday

What a great holiday, the views from the site are breath taking, the entertainment was fun and loved that dogs were welcome, the dog walk was great and everyone was friendly and helpful. The area has some great places to visit, we loved Berry head with the dogs, Dartmouth with its paddle steamer, Dartmoor and its poniEs, Brixham and Torquay to name a few. A blooming great time was had by all, will definately be going back, just need better weather!

The Best Caravan Club site ever

we stopped here for two nights and could not believe it A shop that was stocked to the roof with just about everything you may ever need and very nice friendly helpful staff. A Bar on site which serves food and drink with entertainment at the weekends at a very reasonable price .A heated swimming pool with life guard great for kids and the most helpful and friendly caravan club staff I have ever met (unlike southport), Just wish every caravan club site was like this one. I can't recommend it any higher well worth a visit and very dog friendly as well truly 5 star.

One of the Best

This has got to be one of the best sites. Clean, good facilities etc. Bus stop immediately outside. My problem is with the pricing of £9 for a curry that was not as good as a £1.45 microwave curry fron Lidl. My wife has a cottage pie that wasn't a cottage pie. Mashed spud on top of mince with peas. Our meal with a bottle of wine cost £35. I would estimate its worth was under £10. Will never eat there again. Why on earth do they sell Doom Bar, the worst beer available in the Country. The manager said that it was very popular, perhaps that is because it is the only ale available here. I think it about time to review the bar and restaurant here and perhaps get in some fresh ideas and management. The young staff are very polite, but I found the management stuffy and bored, move on and let someone else inject some life, beer and decent food into the place. Eating and drinking is 100% better at Wetherspoons in Brixham, a short bus ride away

Another Fantastic Break

My family and I returned to Hillhead at the end of May for our second visit. It's still just as fantastic as the first. The site has everything you could possibly want. Great for the kids, stunning scenery, clean, friendly, well run plenty more superlatives but I think you get the message.
