This was our second visit to Hillhead, last time was 4 years ago,and we are already sure we will be returning next year. All of the staff on site, including the wardens, shop assistants, receptionists, bar staff and life guards are all polite, helpful and approachable and have time to have a chat with you.The site is kept immaculately clean and is a credit to all of the staff. The toilets and shower blocks are of a high standard, and having read previous comments about the toilets had no issues myself. The shop is very well stocked, foodwise and those things that you forget to pack or even parts to carry out repairs to your caravan. The meals in the bar were presented quickly, and were very good. The entertainment was good, especially for small children and also a very good play area and park. The swimming pool area was very clean and very well supervised by the life guards,if children are misbehaving in the pool they are quite rightly warned. The amusement area is good, the gambling machines are 2p play so a lot of fun for little expenditure. An addition to our last visit was a free to use cash machine, which was most welcome. The only negatives for me and my family were that the space available around the bar area is very limited,so if you are going for an evening meal or to watch the entertainment you need to be early, and also we tried to attempt the music quiz whilst sitting in the conservatory and couldn't hear anything due to people talking (shouting),dogs barking and children screaming-not a site problem just inconsiderate members (funny enough you could hear a pin drop when they were playing bingo). My biggest annoyance is regarding the dog walk area.As stated before this is our second vist, last time we were here our dog got bitten and we nearly had the same problem this time through irresponsible dog owners NOT keeping their dogs on a lead (including the dog walk area) as they are supposed to do. Perhaps signs are needed to remind owners to keep their animals restrained at all times but would also need random inspections to enforce this. The amount of times we were told "don't worry ,my dog's friendly"as it comes bounding over towards our dog.No one can say that their dog will never snap or react to another dog.The other issue is the lazy dog owners who are unable to bend,or just expect someone else to clean up after their dogs.Again this is not a site issue it is unfortunately down to individuals and probably occurs on other sites too.
We've just left Hillhead after the best 7 days. We were a little worried before arriving that the site would be huge, overcrowded and a bit tight to get our van pitched onto. We couldn't have been more wrong. There were lots of families and lots of kids but the site is totally geared up for that. The swimming pool is lovely and warm (despite being outdoors) definitely warmer than some indoor pools I've been in so it was great even when the weather wasn't quite as warm. The evening entertainment for the kids was brilliant and our 2 boys (aged 5&7) loved every minute. (Special mention to Wishy Washy the magician/kids entertainer who was fantastic.) Added to that is the games room right next door to the bar/restaurant. I'm usually a little wary of letting my kids go far on their own but the set up of the entertainment complex was such that we could happily sit and play bingo or watch the adult entertainment knowing our boys were safe and happy in the games room - only a second away. The food was great. I thought it was a bit pricey at first but when you see the size of the portions and the quality of the food we were very impressed. Toilets and showers were spacious and kept clean and well maintained. There are also 3 family bathrooms which are brilliant when you have little ones and I think every caravan club site should have them. The wardens were lovely and could be seen regularly out cutting grass etc to keep the site in order. Some pitches looked like they would be tight to get into for our size van (7.93m) with no motor mover but there were plenty that were easy enough. The surrounding areas has loads to keep you entertained. beaches, a zoo, a model village, riverboat and steam train and probably loads more that we didn't get time for. All in all one of the best holidays we've had. Just a shame it's an 8hr drive from where we live or we'd be there more often.

We stayed on this site for a week in July it was our first time, its all you expect from a cc site clean and friendly we were in Somerset the week before so we're only driving for just over a hour and didn't mind looking at the vacant pitches had we gone from home we would have travelled over 6 hrs finding a pitch would have been stressful. Toilets showers were immaculate one hair dryer in the ladies was a bit dodgy, the views from the recreation field and dog walk are stunning the little shop has your basics and a few caravan bits plus daily newspapers The bar also does food they have bingo or a quizz for an hour them entertainment. All in all its a great site, you can get a bus by the entrance if you don't want to drive, there are plenty of supermarkets within a 15 minute drive. If we are in the area again we will go back.
