Just back from 4 nights at one of our favourite CC sites. The staff made a massive and much appreciated effort for the Halloween party in Nico's bar and this made for a great evenings fun, although we looked forward to a music quiz on Saturday night but this didn't materialise! The food in Nico's feels a bit pricey but the portions are huge and everything we tried was actually very tasty. The site did have a 'closed up for the winter' feel with the shop shelves looking very empty and only one block in use but otherwise still a lovely place to pitch up and we definitely will again next year.
Bar & Restuarant only open Fri & Sat evenings
This is a favourite site due to the bar and clubhouse restaurant so a group of three couples booked to stay from the last Sunday of the October half term for 5 nights. All of the site information states that a carvery is available on Sunday. So it's reasonable to assume it will be open over the half term as the price charged is higher than the next week isn't it? Well you would be wrong!! It is now only open Friday and Saturday evenings. Bit of a blow because the six of us were celebrating a "significant" birthday, so we had a few G & T's prior to heading to the club house for a Sunday evening carvery only to find it closed. We had all had a couple of drinks so were unable to drive to any nearby hostelry!!
Nothing was said to us on check in, in fact the check in was very perfunctory! On that very issue we arrived at about 11:30 the site was emptying fast and reception had no customers in it BUT the site warden refused to check us in and told us to come back in 30 minutes. He also told us we could not park in the night arrival area (or anywhere else) so we could seek out one of the other couples who had arrived the previous night. Now I know the rule is you cannot check in prior to 12:00 but when there is no-one else present, and the staff are behind the counter it does seem somewhat churlish doesn't it. Add to that the fact that there was no notice in reception about the club house being closed (contrary to the info on the club website)
I accept that the above might be viewed as a sad old git having a miserable whinge but when you have booked a specific site because of the facilities that are published as being available and you then find them closed (although the cost does not reflect that fact) and no effort is made to convey that fact, it is a bit galling!
Having said that it is still a lovely site in a wonderful location

OCTOBER 2016
Just returned from our 1st visit to Hillhead, we stayed for 8 lovely nights. The site is great with good sized pitches. During our stay the site was very peaceful and a pleasure to be on but would imagine that during children's holidays it would be a totally different environment as the facilities are great for families . Lovely bar and restaurant and a well stocked shop.
The wardens are very welcoming and friendly.
Toilets / showers spotless !!! Our ONLY critisisum would be that when we arrived one of the toilet blocks had been closed for the season leaving just 1 for a large site so when it came to cleaning 10.30 - 12.30 queues formed and really we felt that we had to rush to get showered ect every morning . Other than that .... Great site!! Great location!! Lovely staff!!! We will be back.
Spring 2016
This is our first year with the Caravan Club, so we have been trying as wide a variety of sites as possible, from Small Certificated locations to this Site, the Flagship site for the Caravan Club.
We visited during the May half term holiday. Facilities are excellent, with a well stocked onsite shop, superb bar with plenty of evening activities, well equipped play area for children ( our son made plenty of friends.) and the added bonus of a swimming pool.
I really cannot fault the site, however we learned a lesson, which is that we personally prefer smaller sites and CL's which are a little quieter.
Half term visit
Needed a quick break with the kids and must admit found this site to be just what we needed. Reception were very good, pitch was spacious with plenty of room for caravan, awning and car. Great dog walking area, facilities very clean and onsite bar was reasonable. Ordered food from the takeaway and found one of the orders missing items. This was pointed out next night and the bar manageress did apologise and sorted our complaint swiftly. Very good service. We have friends who live close by so this will be a regular stop for us. Well impressed.
First class site 5 star
Great site with all the facilities you could want including an excellent bar serving basic meals at a reasonable price. There is also a shop with an extensive range of goods not just newspapers and food.
The site itself is looked after by a keen team of wardens and some of the pitches have sea views.
The location is good with bus services from the gate to both Brixham and Dartmouth.
A lovely site which we would recommend.
A REAL GEM
What a GREAT site first visit but NOT last we just had a week at this site and cannot wait to return NO negatives as far as we concerned GREAT views, bus outside site and GREAT dog walk and WHAT a BONUS having a club on site for a meal and drink with NO driving for either of us, shop very good perfect site and even good weather in October.

Lovely Location
We were on pitch 24 which had a lovely view out to sea and despite being there in early October we had quite a bit of sunshine. It is a large site and there are more grass pitches (closed during our visit) than hardstandings although during our visit we had plenty of choice. Some are divided by hedges which gives a degree of privacy and some shelter from on shore breezes. Facilities are of an excellent quality and also comprehensive which include a restaurant and a shop. Easy to explore out and about by bus as there are two services that run from outside the entrance. The only slight negatives are that I felt the site was a tad expensive for October, perhaps a mid week discount should be available? Also the quality of the WiFi was not very consistent.
Probably the best CC site in the UK
We (couple mid 60's and retired) have stayed on this site a number of times (always out of the main season though) It is certainly very near to being, if not the, best CC site in the UK. Excellent modern facilities and well kept site. The only drawback is evident from the name "Hillhead" When the wind blows it is a bit exposed !! There is a pretty good (if expensive) bus service to both Brixham and Dartmouth via the foot ferry. If you are staying more than a couple of days its worth getting a book of 10 ferry tickets on the ferry, it works out MUCH cheaper.
I can however imagine that in the height of the season this site would not suit all (me included) as it is firmly geared to families !!! Out of season its delightful (if its not blowing a hooley!)

Holiday camp
This is an awful place to visit during peak season, its dirty, crowded and badly run, however its a very different experience out of season
