Garlieston

It was our first time at Garlieston and we thought the site was lovely nice and peaceful with lovely sea views. The wardens were helpful and the site facilities were very good. We loved the peace and quiet and the slow pace of everything. The Pub down the road from the site served lovely meals at a reasonable price. I think it was a Friday when the fish and chip van came and it was very popular. The only down side was the lack of shops the only one was the local garage which is a good walk away and from where you could order your papers but very limited in the grocery side of things. The local buses run regular.

Great experience

Really enjoyed this site and the area in general. The site was, I would guess, 90% full, but still quiet, whilst we were there. Many pitches provide for a nice view over the harbour. The local pub was welcoming and friendly. Plenty of Walks in the near vicinity and beyond. The area in general is mainly rural with small towns and villages dotted about..There are imited local bus services, otherwise a car is necessary to get to most places. Enjoyed tge site and the area very much and would be happy to revisit at some point in the future.

Most unusual site

This was our second site in a three week trip. I have to say the road to reach the site was dreadful - like a cart track. But the welcome from the wardens was warm and friendly and we were recommended a pitch with extra grass for our dog and a good view over the harbour. We had a lovely stay. The weather was varied (but it is Scotland) but we did plenty of walking and visiting. There are two bays to visit and a certain amount of walking from the site. Take most of what you need with you. The local garage is the shop. It is very limited with what it offers. And the nearest supermarket is a bit of a drive .Wigtown is your nearest. They are no cash machines closer than Wigtown either - be warned. And very few places close to the site to eat. We went to the local inn - but were turned away as they were full. They were also full of loud and fairly drunken people too. I say no more. We found the local area very deprived indeed - quite shocking in many ways. We visited the arboretum next door to the site and, with everyone else, wondered at the faded decay of Garlieston House. It was when we were leaving that we had a disaster - caravan was clearly in difficulties and eventually it was clear we would have to be relayed home. The warden was brilliant. He made helpful suggestions, found a pitch for us to limp onto that the flatbed would be able to access the next morning and even told us that we could leave the van in their care to be collected if we needed too. Our lady warden (so sorry to have forgotten your name) was also lovely. She rang our following two sites, cancelled for us and made sure we didn't get a warning letter for late cancellation. Mayday were rubbish, the caravan took five days to be repatriated, we are still waiting for the part to be made so no caravan all summer. But the wardens were great and we had a good stay. And maybe we'll be back next year.

The site is in a lovely harbour position. Staff were very helpful. Facilities were very good. Pub restaurant close by. Plenty of walking around the coast.

What a Gem

Our first visit to this site, and what a gem. As others have said, staff very friendly and helpful. Came here for the piece and quiet. Had a nice walk on the see, but be warned, the tide comes in fast, so keep an eye in it, if walking out to the waters edge. The pub is very nice, and staff friendly. They serve breakfast until about 10. And the evening food is excellent and a good price. I recommend this site and area for a brake. Well worth the 7 hour journey.

A brilliant few days stay in Garlieston

We have just had a week up on the Galloway Coast and spent time in Garlieston on the club site. The wardens on the site were very helpful and the site was well kept. The meal out at the Harbour Inn was well worth the visit. We look forward to returning in the future

Why I keep returning to Garlieston

We first went to Garlieston because of the setting and because it was a club site. We travel for 4 hrs to get there, passing many other sites in Cumbria as well as Dumfries and Galloway. We love the area, the peace, the cycling and the small towns but most of all we love the welcome we get when we arrive there. We are greeted as old and valued friends, I find the use of our first names much nicer than being called Mrs. Clark. Ann and Martin know where we like to pitch, what we like to do and where we like to go. Many of these places are at their recommendation, without their knowledge we may have missed them. We have been to other sites regularly but find new faces each time. Although they are pleasant and professional once we have paid up there has been a lack of interaction and interest and I have not felt they are knowlegable about the area that is new to them. Keep up the good work Ann & Martin we look forward to our next visit to you.

What a gem!

First visit but will not be our last. A very friendly welcome from the Irish warden on arrival. Excellent site, very well maintained, beautiful flower display and a very informative info hut. The view from our pitch harbour side was stunning across the bay. We could have sat all day just watching the tide coming in and going out. Although we also had a look in the walled garden area and that looked lovely as well but no with no view. It was a very quiet site with only the sound of the birds for company. We had some lovely walks both left and right from the site entrance. It was lovely to see some kayakkers once the tide came in. The site was extremely clean and so was the toilet block (but it does need updating by the Club). Please don't let this put you off visiting though as the facilities are immaculate. Well Done.

Relaxing place

Just back after two weeks at garlieston, the flowers at the entrance show the effort being put in by the wardens to enhance your stay, our first time but won’t be the last very relaxing and well kept site ,we were there when the lone piper played , and also felt disappointed he was asked to stop his spontaneous piping for a short spell brought most people out to listen/enjoy his playin and just to chat ( yes chat) that’s not common these days, anyway it was a fantastic break an we can’t praise the site or wardens enough.
