Love this site

Firstly the site. We have used this site many times but only for overnight stopovers on our way somewhere else. Each time we do this we say we really must stay longer. Excellent access to and from the A1. With the Country Park, steam train (I for one, love to hear them whistle and 9pm isn't too late surely!) and countless other attractions in the area. The layout, pitches and facilities are good as per the usual Club standard and its so peaceful and quiet. The staff were very friendly and efficient and always had time to stop and chat. Excellent site that i cannot fault. Secondly, reading other reviews. I cannot see a problem with the 'extra' barrier. Having added security is surely for our benefit. With the regard to the issue of early arrivals. This is something that really annoys me at most CAMC sites. Arrival times are clearly stated and are set for many reasons. It astounds me that people cannot adhere to this very simple 'rule'. Its so easy to plan your trip to arrive at a planned time and it would save everyone a lot of hassle and resentment if only people could accept this. I wish this ruling was enforced at every site. We use CAMC sites because they are run in a way that we like and suits us. If you don't like the way CAMC sites are run - simple - don't use them and leave them for those that don't have a problem with living with rules!

WHY THE BARRIER BEFORE THE BARRIER?

I had a lovely weekend's stay at Ferry Meadows - great to cycle into Peterborough as I did this time, or take the train as I've done previously. As always the site and facilities were great. But wait, has there been a mass trespass by unwanted caravanners that would give cause to add an additional barrier before the normal barrier? Otherwise, I'm at a loss to understand the need for such a thing. Not expecting to come up against the barrier, I was too far away to hear what the speaker was saying - I eventually realised the warden was asking for my name which I gave, waited whilst paper was shuffled and was finally 'allowed' in. After I had given my name (again) and checked in, I queried the reason for the extra barrier with the wardens and was told it made people feel safe. There's already a barrier after reception so why wouldn't they feel safe already? I arrived when reception wasn't busy, any more than one caravan/motorhome arriving at the same time must surely cause queuing on to the road - not helpful for the public or the Club's reputation. I was made to feel like public enemy number one for having raised the question at all, I was told "well you're entitled to your opinion" and felt sure I was the topic of conversation after I left reception. On the whole a disappointing and unfriendly arrival. What are we doing as a 'friendly' club here? Creating, yet more, unnecessary rules, just the sort of thing that puts off potential members and broadens the 'rules is rules' reputation the Club has already cultivated. I wondered later if the barrier is simply to prevent any 'naughty' members who arrive early from gaining access - as mentioned by a member below - if so, that would be a sad indictment too.

Our View

The site is well appointed and manicured to a high standard. Access and egress security is very good and well controlled. The toilets and showers are pristinely clean and well maintained. You are close to great facilities including a beefeater, cafe, park and steam railway within walking distance. The taff are very accommodating, friendly, helpful and available. The only negative is the steam railway, it runs till 2100 in the evening and every time it passes the steam whistle is blown very loudly 3 to 4 times. But a small price to pay when staying at such a great site. Thanks John Davis

Don't arrive early

Don't arrive at this site early, we went out in our car one morning during our stay and came back at 11.45am to find a large motorhome at the first barrier, the driver had spoken to the wardens via the intercom system and had been refused entry. That meant we had to reverse out across a busy footpath and busy road to allow this motorhome to reverse out, go and sit down the road for 15 minutes before the wardens would let him in. Why couldn't this motorhome been allowed in to wait in the late night arrivals area which was empty for 15 minutes instead of making two vehicle perform a dangerous manoeuvre. During our stay work was carried out on several of the pitches and although it was rather noisy, we must praise the workmen for a very neat and tidy job.

Great Site in a Great Location

We stayed for 4 nights in late February early March. Ferry Meadows is split over two sites, East and West, although in the winter months the West site only is open and this where the reception is also located. The facilities are of the usual high C&MC standard, and some of the pitches have also very recently been re-laid, as has part of the road around them. The very best part of the Ferry Meadows site is it’s location. Set in the Nene Valley Country Park, there are acres of open space for people of all ages (and their dogs!) to enjoy. There are also three large lakes (reclaimed gravel pits) with an abundance of wildlife to watch and enjoy. Many other reviewers have listed the many other advantages of this excellent site and I can only agree with them. Great Site in a Great Location

Excellent site - spotless facilities.

The site is truly excellent, really well maintained spotless facilities, easy access off the A1, so an ideal stop-over when heading north. It's also immediately adjacent to a wetlands wildlife area with great dog-walking facilities. Really could not fault this site at all.

Short break in journey travelling north

Stopped off here in February for 2 nights during half term week. We were lucky to get a pitch at short notice. The site was almost full. There were only 2 couples on duty and they were very busy. Quiet site in the evenings, and wonderfully placed next to Nene Country Park. The children's play area was small for the number of children on site, but had the other half of the site been open I am sure the play area over there would have been fine. The site was easy to find and lots of cycling options. We hired bikes from Rutland Cycling and our grandson got to try a bike with multiple gears. I can see us using this site again to break our journey from the North down to London.

A FABULOUS Site

This is our first time motorhoming and we have been back and forth to this site since December. Great for dog walks and easy of access to Peterborough City Centre and the walk to the local Tesco express is not that bad either! Down side, the fish and chip van not going to the site in the winter (I am sure it would have been profitable over Christmas, given the number of Mohos and Caravans in situ. The wardens are friendly and helpful. It is also lovely seeing the wildlife around the site (foxes, rabbits and squirrels), so if you wonder why your dog is ‘alert’ you can understand why! We will definitely use again, before heading off on our European travels!!

If heading south to London, this is a good stop off site

I have stayed here on 3 occasions on my way south to London. It is easily accessible from the A1. It is also a good site for families, being adjacent to Nene Valley Railway and the park. There are good walks in the park for nature lovers. The cafe, by the waterside, has a room where you can take dogs (they serve a wonderful breakfast). The cafe closest to the site has a covered area where dogs are welcome. Don't forget your club membership card as they offer a discount to members. On my 1st visit, after a long drive, I thought the welcome form the site staff was rather abrupt. I travel alone and accept that I had been anxious about finding the site, and so this may have clouded my judgement slightly, however I found the reception I received was lacking warmth. I was given abrupt instruction as to how to find a pitch and site my caravan.I was given no information about the local area and offers available. (Eg discount in the cafe and on the railway ) On my 3rd visit, I parked my small caravan with the post to the centre. I accept that i was positioned wrongly but decided, rather than manoeuvre again (i do not have a mover installed), I decided to stay in position. I have a very small caravan , was staying for one night only and was not erecting an awning. There were no other units on either side of me (at all - all other units were opposite me). It was pointed out to me, within minutes, that I was parked incorrectly. Fortunately the gentleman allowed me to stay in position but I felt that this permission was given grudgingly. I had noticed that a much larger unit (a fifth wheel) was also parked with the post to centre. When i approached the warden about this, I was informed that it was ok because of the position of the pitch, and the vehicle is hard to manoeuvre! I do understand that there should be regulations and that they should be adhered to. But i also think common sense should prevail and that people chosing to work in the leisure industry should be approachable, friendly and be able to listen before giving a lecture, as indeed most staff are. I have expressed these comments directly to the staff on site
