The site is well placed within an ancient quarry which makes it quite a quiet spot, disturbed mainly by birdsong. There are some super short walks starting right from the site through woods, fields and to viewpoints. At times you can hear the boy racers in the distance but not too much.
There was a fish and chip van in the Saturday evening - not as good as my local chippie but it saved cooking.
The wardens have a well stocked shop full of lovely local bakery goodies - we tried the pain au chocolat, croissants and stilton scones.
We took a 10 year old boy with us who had been hoping to find other children to play with. The nature of the area means that this site is probably more suited to people interested in hill walking or visiting Buxton and so there were no other children to play with.
This would make a very good adults only site.
Location great, site unkept
Stayed 7 nights, location great, nice walk to Solomons temple and walk through woods to Buxton town. Visited Chatsworth house and walked up Mam Tor, Castleton village and Bakewell. Unfortunately site looked neglected, overgrown grass between pitches, noticed many dogs being let mess on grass, there is no dedicated dog exercise area and no instructions saying do not exercise dogs on site although there is a country park only by entrance. During COVID only 4 allowed in facilities (6 on other CAMC sites), not clear instructions given when checking in of band use as many people did not know what they were meant to be doing, some ladies were taking bands in with them! Unused shower cubicle floors filthy as noticed through gap, apparently only washed once a week, should obviously be more then especially during COVID. SHAME as location is great, quiet and peaceful, just needs some TLC as mentioned in a previous review.
Great location
Really liked the location in the old quarry. Easy walk into Buxton for evenings out. The short walk to Solomon's Tower and the circular walk round the outside of the site both really useful if you have a dog to exercise. Only problem is lack of a mobile phone signal.
Mid-summer at Buxton
We have spent the last 10 or so nights at the Buxton CMC site. It's a very peaceful location with the only sound the local bird song.
The site is located in an old quarry, I'm guessing Grinlow quarry and it's located a couple of miles from the Spa town of Buxton. The walk into town is through Grinlow woods and it's quite a steep trail into town. Not a problem heading out from the site but takes a little longer on the route back.
We had a fully serviced pitch which we utilised to the full given the Covid restrictions and the inevitable queues for the toilet block which only allows access to 4 people at a time. Nevertheless the facilities are first rate.
I would add that the landscaping at the site looks neglected. We are used to pristinely trimmed hedges and grass verges at CMC sites but it's all looking a bit wild, and in need of some TLC here at Grinlow.
Have a look here at some of the things we did and places to eat

What a wonderful site!
June 2021. First visit to this site after many attempts to find late availability over the past 5 years. Not surprised it is always busy! It is a wonderful site. Spacious, peaceful, well laid out and beautifully kept. It is also a stone's throw from the town with its great facilities and the perfect location for exploring all parts of the magnificent Peak District. So lucky to have been able to stay for 8 nights and will make every effort to book again. Definitely in my top 5 club sites.
No phone signal, no wifi, no TV reception... otherwise great!
Good location, very good facilities, nice & helpful staff... but it's deep in a quarry so there's no mobile phone signal and therefore no wifi. We paid for the club wifi, but it was so slow (even when loading single web pages) that it was pointless; that was £3.50 wasted. There's no TV reception either, unless you can connect by cable.
A minor gripe: why have the motorhome service point waste water disposal on the way in, rather than on the way out?
Top site
Enjoyed a mid week break here. Very busy but very well managed and maintained. A good shop. Good walks into and back from Buxton via various routes. Buxton itself is a lovely place. All in all very satisfied and will return.
.
A unique and beautiful site in a great location and ran by a great team. Thank you!
I had been to this site as a child and have been meaning to return for some time. What a stunning location, and very well maintained and operated site.
Nicely located for a walk into Buxton, through the woodland trail and past the caverns. Buxton itself is a great little town with a fantastic park/pavillion area with rowing boat hire and a few other activities for the kids. Plenty of restaurants/pubs and all the usual. We recommend the Greek restaurant called Ithaca.
We were made to feel very welcome by the staff and they were very helpful when we requested to stay an extra night. The small shop is great and has most things you need, including some nice fresh bakery items like bread, pastries and the compulsary bakewell pudding! Most pitches are well sized and fairly private. It was busy when we arrived but we still had the choice of several good spots.
I heard a few moans and groans while I was there about the number of people allowed in the toilet blocks, and that people were not taking their rubber bands off the hook as they left, which meant people thought the facilities were full when they weren't. I don't think it's fair to hassle the staff for this, and as guests/visitors we have to take responsibility for following the guidelines, or risk losing the facilities once more. The toilet blocks were kept very clean and nearly always available when required, so no complaints from me.
A lovely stay at a great site. We will be back!
Nice site in good location
Really nice site lovely walks very close by. Clean facilities. Recommended. We had a problem bank holiday weekend with teenagers riding bikes around the site doing stunts and wheelies feel that wardens should be dealing with this nearly got hit several times. Stunning country park location great if you have dogs.
