Love it here!!

Such a beautiful place! We have been here twice this year and will definitely return. A very clean site with helpful and friendly staff. So much nature all around, many walks for you to do with a dog and trees for the kids to climb on route!!! You can walk from the campsite into Buxton town which has a lovely park for the kids, indoor markets, shops and restaurants. Go ape is also a 5 / 10 min walk from the site on the way to Buxton, my son and husband loved doing this when we went recently. The WiFi isn’t great, but who needs it - your on holiday - in fact our 14 year old who we thought would struggle without internet access, didn’t miss it all! Can’t wait to go back so much more still to do and places and towns to explore.

Brief Visit

It is many years since we have been to Buxton site and we were pleasantly surprised by the beauty of the quarry walls and the layout of the site - I believe it has had a makeover in recent years. Unfortunately, we were only there one night, on the way back from the Lake District, but it is definitely a site which deserves a longer stay. A lovely welcome from the wardens on arrival and the site shop was a delight, especially as other sites have, understandably, cut back in these Covid times. There were basics (thanks for the emergency kitchen roll!) and local fresh baked items. I went in to buy two pasties and came out with half a dozen items which were all delicious. I can't remember which band system the site was using for the facilities block but, for some reason it was a nightmare - of course, people make mistakes and take the band away or don't remove it from the hook - but, when either of us visited the facilities block there was always an issue with the bands outside v the number of people inside - sometimes empty, sometimes over-populated. Only having 4 bands for quite a big site was probably a challenge. Hopefully, the whole band system can be a distant memory from next week?! Thank you for a lovely, if brief, stay.

We will return!

We only stayed 2 nights but wish we could have stayed longer. We particularly loved the wild flowers allowed to grow on the grass and in the hedgerows and the homes for ‘little creatures’. The greenery growing along the quarry face made everything feel so very natural, we much prefer this to places that are neat as a pin. We had a great pitch, the number of which I have noted! The site wardens are very friendly and doing a brilliant job. Since the dastardly virus arrived we have been using our own facilities, mainly to protect the people that have to clean the showers and toilets as well as other members and ourselves. Not sure if we will ever go back to using communal facilities. As for the goods from the Bakewell Pudding shop, it would be rude not to enjoy them!

Buxton for walking, peace and quiet.

The site is well placed within an ancient quarry which makes it quite a quiet spot, disturbed mainly by birdsong. There are some super short walks starting right from the site through woods, fields and to viewpoints. At times you can hear the boy racers in the distance but not too much. There was a fish and chip van in the Saturday evening - not as good as my local chippie but it saved cooking. The wardens have a well stocked shop full of lovely local bakery goodies - we tried the pain au chocolat, croissants and stilton scones. We took a 10 year old boy with us who had been hoping to find other children to play with. The nature of the area means that this site is probably more suited to people interested in hill walking or visiting Buxton and so there were no other children to play with. This would make a very good adults only site.

Location great, site unkept

Stayed 7 nights, location great, nice walk to Solomons temple and walk through woods to Buxton town. Visited Chatsworth house and walked up Mam Tor, Castleton village and Bakewell. Unfortunately site looked neglected, overgrown grass between pitches, noticed many dogs being let mess on grass, there is no dedicated dog exercise area and no instructions saying do not exercise dogs on site although there is a country park only by entrance. During COVID only 4 allowed in facilities (6 on other CAMC sites), not clear instructions given when checking in of band use as many people did not know what they were meant to be doing, some ladies were taking bands in with them! Unused shower cubicle floors filthy as noticed through gap, apparently only washed once a week, should obviously be more then especially during COVID. SHAME as location is great, quiet and peaceful, just needs some TLC as mentioned in a previous review.

Great location

Really liked the location in the old quarry. Easy walk into Buxton for evenings out. The short walk to Solomon's Tower and the circular walk round the outside of the site both really useful if you have a dog to exercise. Only problem is lack of a mobile phone signal.

Mid-summer at Buxton

We have spent the last 10 or so nights at the Buxton CMC site. It's a very peaceful location with the only sound the local bird song. The site is located in an old quarry, I'm guessing Grinlow quarry and it's located a couple of miles from the Spa town of Buxton. The walk into town is through Grinlow woods and it's quite a steep trail into town. Not a problem heading out from the site but takes a little longer on the route back. We had a fully serviced pitch which we utilised to the full given the Covid restrictions and the inevitable queues for the toilet block which only allows access to 4 people at a time. Nevertheless the facilities are first rate. I would add that the landscaping at the site looks neglected. We are used to pristinely trimmed hedges and grass verges at CMC sites but it's all looking a bit wild, and in need of some TLC here at Grinlow. Have a look here at some of the things we did and places to eat http://www.caravanramblings.co.uk/?p=3888

What a wonderful site!

June 2021. First visit to this site after many attempts to find late availability over the past 5 years. Not surprised it is always busy! It is a wonderful site. Spacious, peaceful, well laid out and beautifully kept. It is also a stone's throw from the town with its great facilities and the perfect location for exploring all parts of the magnificent Peak District. So lucky to have been able to stay for 8 nights and will make every effort to book again. Definitely in my top 5 club sites.

No phone signal, no wifi, no TV reception... otherwise great!

Good location, very good facilities, nice & helpful staff... but it's deep in a quarry so there's no mobile phone signal and therefore no wifi. We paid for the club wifi, but it was so slow (even when loading single web pages) that it was pointless; that was £3.50 wasted. There's no TV reception either, unless you can connect by cable. A minor gripe: why have the motorhome service point waste water disposal on the way in, rather than on the way out?
