Stayed in October for 8 nights, lots to see and do. Visited Churchills home in Chartwell, Battle of Britain museum in Hawkinge, Dover Castle, White Cliffs, Folkstone and enjoyed the coastal walks. Also took the opportunity for a day trip to Calais via Eurotunnel. Well worth spending time here and the site facilities are the usual high standard for the Club. The Black Horse Inn across the road has now closed down, but we had a lovely meal at the Jackdaw Inn.
We stayed at Black Horse Farm for two nights, one on the way to France and one on the way back. It is literally 15 minutes max to the tunnel, so it is a great place for an overnight kip before setting of across the Channel. The ferry pitches are all near the site entrance so the regular customers don't get disturbed by the early departures. The site staff allocate pitches so, when we arrived, we were told which pitch was ours. When we returned we weren't in any hurry to get away so I phoned the site in advance and asked for a pitch a bit further from the entrance, and the very helpful staff obliged and put us on a very nice pitch near the first service point. The site and the facilities are extremely well kept, the grass was in excellent condition considering the hot summer, and everywhere was really clean and tidy. Coping with so many comings and goings must create a lot of unique problems for the site staff, but they manage the site admirably. Having taken the opportunity to walk around the site it is clearly a really nice place and is worthy of a visit in its own right, not just using it as a stopover on the way to the Channel ports. Well done to the Club and the staff.
First time visit to site and have found it to be extremely well appointed for visiting various places of interest. The fact that a no.16 bus stops outside the site every 20 mins and takes you directly to centre of Canterbury is a bonus and means not having to drive, £7 for an explorer ticket cover all day travel. Site most pleasant and staff very helpful. Opposite site entrance is a local, well stocked, shop.
We have visited this site on a number of occasions using the ferry pitches for an overnight before or after the Channel Tunnel. Each time we have told ourselves that we should come back to visit properly. I am glad we finally did so, staying in the "paddock" in the site proper rather than the ferry pitches near the entrance.
The site was quite full and the hardstandings available were mainly in the shade, fine for the hot summer we have had, but not so good for September, so we pitched on a grass pitch, which was reasonably flat and very spacious.
The facilities at this end are just as clean as the ferry pitches, but are looking a little tired and could do with refurbishment in the next few years, That said, no complaints at all, plenty of hot water for showers, washing and washing up. We did not use the laundry area but it looked useful.
From the site it is a right turn to go down to the tunnel, and the M20/A20 for Folkestone & Dover, left for a 20/25 minute drive to the park and ride at Canterbury or to the Eastern coast for Margate, Broadstairs or Whitstable.
All in all an excellent site for short break, not just a ferry/tunnel overnighter.
We stayed for one night before getting ferry to calais. Ringing ahead to pay and get barrier code meant we could arrive after 8pm.
We booked a ferry pitch and thevsute was quiet . No noise from early departures and clean facilities. Literally able to pull in , shower , sleep and depart with ease.
Will come again .
You just can't get much more convenient to the Eurotunnel. It's just 15 minutes drive away. We booked a ferry pitch as we were on the first train out of Dodge. The pitches were large enough for our eight meter Buccaneer cruiser and facilities close by and very clean. The Black Horse pub over the road makes for a n excellent evening dinner. Be sure to book ahead. You won't get in otherwise. All good. Many thanks all staff.
This ticked most boxes for us. We stopped for one night each way to France on the ferry crossing. The first night we were on a ‘ferry pitch’ which are generally nearer the entrance. The closest toilet block to this is near the reception and is more basic but does the job. We were woken too early by some unsociable caravanners who left the engine of their Porsche 4x4 running for ages whilst attempting to hook up to get away at 6am.
The staff are good at allocating the ferry pitches depending on crossing time to reduce the noise of moving off site.
Our return stop over was fab. A ‘standard pitch’ that was much quieter as we were in no desperate rush to get going. This pitch was closer to the lower toilet block, which was more updated with better showers etc..
Overall, a great place to spend a night or two before moving on, and as others have said, 15 mins to tunnel terminal and 20 mins to ferry terminal. You can’t get much more convenient than this without traffic noise!
Personally, we (a family of 4) wouldn’t stay for more than 2 nights at one visit. But, no complaints as a stop over
Chose this site as it was really close to the tunnel - which is about 10-15 mins away. We did think it might be more of a transit type of site but when we arrived we were pleasantly surprised. What a nice spot. Plus points:
- little shop just over the road
- facilities even though not mega modern, were pristine and spotless even at 9pm after a day’s use! The showers were a dream, really generously proportioned, lots of seating area and no damp flappy curtains here, just a sensible partition so our clothes were kept dry
- dog exercise area was well though out and secure and so our pooch had the opportunity for a good run about before being in our van for the long journey ahead
- smart, tidy, good size pitches, laid out in small groups, an area had eco planting and the tent area was lovely and flat - in fact all the pitches looked fairly, we didn’t need chocks but some did I think
- great friendly tranquil atmosphere, didn’t feel transit-like at all
- speedy check in
We can’t comment on the nearby pub although it didn’t look that inviting, road outside busy, although the site was lovely and quiet.
No negatives from our perspective, we will definitely return.
Thanks for a great stay
