The lure of ehu

Just come off a Rally on an all singing and dancing commercial site.   They did a deal where the ehu was optional @£3 p/n.   28 vans 25 paid for ehu.  We didn’t refilled the gas bottle after we got back and it cost me £4.51, the bottle had been used for 4  nights on a clubsite so ehu and 3 nights non-ehu so 7 nights in total.

No moral to this story just numbers.

lol smile

I remember a lady colleague of the same 'rank' who would always address the caretaker as 'caretaker' and wouldn't acknowledge them unless she had too. One time we both ordered some large whiteboards for the walls in our offices. Anyway they arrived and mine went up but hers did not, she questioned it and they kept making up excuses about being busy and doing it tomorrow. A week went by and still nothing. She summoned the caretaker and demanded why it hadn't been done . he replied that when they opened the box it was 'damaged' and had to be returned and they were awaiting a re-order! As he walked out he gave me a wink.

Actually I remember my third boss used to bribe the caretakers to park his MH in the locked 'goods in' yard on Fridays so that he could start his weekend motor-homing from work.

When I built 'Millie', one of the most important aspects of her design was to make her as independent as possible which allows us the luxury of stopping on some truly amazing CL's where the very mentioning of the dreaded EHU letters is tantamount to swearing!!

The result of this is that we never stop on sites that offer the facility and indeed one of my main search objectives each year when the new guide comes out is to mark all the £10 and under per. night sites that I can find of which there are quite a lot and many of them are absolute tranquil gems.

The other advantage of all of these sites I have ever stopped on over the years is that I can't recall ever seeing an outfit with an infernal television on or indeed any music being played on some power sapping sound system.

Believe it or not, life can and does exist without mobile phones, tablets, televisions or those damnable EHU's

I do very similar MM. I get busy with the marker pen. I’m glad to see that non EHU has led you to stay in some amazing sites. I have found exactly  the same. For me, being independent is what it’s all about. Modern kit and the new technologies make offgrid caravanning so much more convenient  than it used to be.We have had some pretty foul weather over the last week here in Norfolk  but the Safefill and the Lithium together have provided a warm and cosy van. I am still amazed at this Lithium- I expect it to be well down having had lights, heating pump, wifi, and charging for toothbrush, phones etc but the lowest it’s got is 86% and that was on just one occasion- normally it’s in the 90s. . I just don’t miss the EHU- It’s something I don’t have to think about now. There is life after cutting the umbilical cord!

Those of you enjoying the freedom of no EHU, - do you have electricity at home, or do you live off grid?

Of course we do. Why be so patronising?

The advantage of "living off grid" for us, as motorhomers,  is that it enables us to make use of Aires / Stellplatz / Sostas in Europe. It gives us options:

- spend a night or two on an Aire  / Stellplatz / Sosta en route to some "destination site"

- spend a night on one just before / after  a ferry crossing

 - spend a night on one just on the edge  of a village / town  / city we really want to visit - park  up, explore, dine at a restaurant, sleep, move on next morning

With solar panels and an inverter, we are as comfortable  as we are with EHU. Modern outfits are geared up for this.

It's freedom.

Sorry, it's not meant to be patronising.

We know people who do live off grid (partly because of the location) and manage very well with alternative power and boreholes etc.

It can be done - he manages very well - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shepherd%27s_Life

Personally I think the suggestion by some that they're happy not to plug in is fine, it saves electricity and it should reduce site fees for those who choose to go without.

There was quite a bit of disappointment when the club insisted that everyone hook up for an inclusive fee at the National and enjoy the proximity of a noisy generator, to cover the costs no doubt.

Choice is a fine thing! smile

We spend time in a gorgeous cottage on Dartmoor that is almost off grid. We got there a couple of years ago to find owner in a bit of a panic. It had been such a dry Summer the usual water supply had dried up for first time in living memory. We just told him for us it was part of the adventure, he was so relieved, said that some of his visitors would have gone home, made his life a misery. An hour after our arrival he had a bowser of fresh water sorted and had arranged with a borehole company to sort out something on the farm, so it couldn’t happen again. We found the whole thing fascinating, all over Dartmoor boreholes were going in. Proof indeed that the climate is changing if the SW “sponge” is drying up! We had a glorious two weeks, never lacked for water for anything. All sorted. Hoping to get back this year.😁

That reminds me of a certain Channel Island where my Uncle lived, water was in short supply so you washed up in the same water all day...not to mention having a bath...wink (I'm glad the club let us have water laughing)
