Anybody who complains about the facilities MUST live in palaces! This is my first ever campsite and facilities in my book were GREAT! The clue is in the name.. "campsite" and the price (I've paid mire for a filthy hovel in Kolkata (India) If your outfit is so luxurious that you would prefer to use them to the ones at the campsite then I recommend you do so... after all you probably spent £60,000 for it so you may as well get your moneys worth!...I must be terribly unobservant because I brought my dog and we both had a lovely time with only the occasional bark (my home has more dogs causing problems than the campsite )and I never noticed the negative signage! Nor experienced any negativity! I will be back!
Nice site in a great location. Site not particularly dog friendly with signs up everywhere, if you don't want dogs then don't let them come! Our well behaved dogs did however enjoy their stay with the beach and walks only minutes away!
Sadly toilet blocks in need of a revamp, not up to standard these days, we used our own facilities which is not really what we expected or paid for.
After reading mixed reviews about this site we were not sure what to expect. All we can say is what a gem. Where on earth were the negative reviewers staying - it surely can’t have been here. From the wardens to the facilities the standards are superb. The site is beautifully laid out with plenty of space and light and is well tended by the lovely wardens. Now to the much criticised toilet block. We noted one reviewer stated it should be raised to the ground in view of its ‘old brown tiles’, dull mirrors, poor water pressure, wobbly toilets .......what nonsense. The facilities are as good as most other CMH sites and certainly a great deal better than some others we could mention. Please also note that dogs are also welcomed and on discussing this with thebwardens we discovered that, as usual, problems only arise when people do not scoop the poop! The Wirral is a fabulous area with lots of walks and tremendous views across the Dee to Wales. We would highly recommend the area and this site.
Stayed at The Wirral Country Park Site for 7 nights last week. Staff were very friendly and could not have been more helpful when needed. They keep the site spotless. The location is superb, easy to get to and the views across the River Dee to North Wales were spectacular. However, for a site so large it was disappointing that my wife and I on more than one occasion found ourselves queuing to use the showers. Only four cubicles in each of the female/male bathrooms! For a site so large and so popular, it must surely be time to review, expand and rejuvenate the aging facilities.
The site was easy to get to and in the ideal location for visiting the Wirral. We normally have a hard standing pitch but chose a grass one this time due to the views over the river to Wales. Facilities up to the usual high standard. If you are a cyclist then you have direct access to the 12 miles of cycle way which can also be covered on foot. We particularly enjoyed our visit to Port Sunlight and Parkgate. Also, easy access to the railway station for trips to Chester and Liverpool.
Was disappointed that there was no WiFi reception. Nice site close to lots of lovely walks. Was a bit disappointed that getting down to the beach wasn't easy, especially with a push chair. I would go again if I was in the area.
Noting others comments, I would say that this site is one of my and my family's favourite sites, yes the toilet block is tired, but it is kept as clean as possible by the wardens; perhaps some visitors should look to themselves for the messes left in there on rare occasions.Yes, the dog owners are a little pressured, but having been present at times when loose and noisy dogs cause a problem, the wardens are only enforcing the clubs policy. Everyone deserves a good holiday, not just the few, so maybe some tolerance is due. The area remains terrific, the Wardens are all welcoming and helpful. I will continue to visit without complaint, and hope that the Club do extend the lease and reinvigorate the Toilet block.
We have just completed a 10 night stay at the Wirral Country Park and the following comments might be of assistance to anyone that has not stayed there before.
Location: the site is in a wonderful spot on the Wirral and the views, walks and cycling from the site are just lovely. Grass pitches are in the best locations and don't rush to take the pitches that overlook the estuary as these may not be the best ones to choose.
Toilet Block: This should be raised to the ground as it is truly awful. Toilets rock around on the floor because they are loose, the showers are run down and have dreadful water pressure, and the gents never smells clean and fresh. Mirrors are old and not so clear or bright any more and the old brown floor tiles are particularly nasty. This part of the site completely let it down, so much so my wife and I showered in our van most of the time. The caravan club need to take a lesson from affiliated sites such as Love2stay in Shrewsbury or the CCC site in Teversal. Knock this block down and start again.
Washing up area: Reasonable and this is about all that should be said. Water is blisteringly hot though which is good.
Dogs: This is probably one of the worst sites for making dog owners feel persecuted. Expect to see lots of signs saying dogs must not be walked on site, and god forbid they wee or poo anywhere other then off site. Whilst there will always be a minority of dog owners that do not clear up after their animals, and let them bark at anything that walks past their unit, not every dog is a bad animal. Shame of the club and this that carry out the rules for blatantly making dog owners feel like second class citizens. This is not the first MHCC site that has adopted this stance.
Access: No great problem with access but the last section into Thurstaton can be a little tight if two caravans meet in opposite directions.
Arrival: Do not try to arrive bang on or before 12:00 as there will be a long queue and there is precious little parking except on the main access road.
Wardens: Ian and Sue are lovely and I am sure the new assistants will also be great to work with.
Shopping: 3.5 miles to West Kirby where there is Aldi and Morrisons. Beware the asking cameras at Aldi as the customer has to tell the system they have left the store or face a £70 fine. I was caught twice with this during my stay as I did not notice the single computer terminal in store that has to be used when you leave.
Activities: Great walking and cycling on the Wirral Way
Repairs: Lots of electric hook up poles that do not have working lights which is a problem at night in certain areas.
Tranquility: Great but probably not so good around the children's play area
Overall opinion: Lovely location, lots to do, but an awful toilet and shower block.
Called here for 3 nights after Southport. Was expecting the usual standard of facilities but was sad to see a tired toilet block and very few service points. The toilets in the ladies were hanging off the wall and were avoided wherever possible.
The staff were really helpful but sadly couldn't do anything about the fact the block is desperately in need of refurbishment.
The site itself is in a beautiful location. A short walk turning left from the site takes you to the local sailing club. Walk along the jetty and see beautiful sunsets or just sit on the benches and take in the view.
West Kirby and Hoylake were lovely.
On the subject of the bird scarers If you have a noise phobic child or dog then this is not the site for you. They are shotgun sounds twice every half hour from 5.30am until 10pm. They terrified my little dog.
Please check with the site before booking to see if they are in operation.
We will be back but not until a full refurbishment of the toilet block takes place and definitely not when the bird scarers are in operation.
This was our second visit to this site. Last time saw us dealing with high winds and flooded pitches, this time it was baking hot and proper summer weather. Improvements have been made to some pitches since our last visit and it was good to see that no further erosion of the cliff face has happened. We throughly enjoyed being back and visiting Liverpool from Hoylake where there is a free park-and-ride car park adjacent to the railway station (the height barrier was not across when we visited) and with 15 minute services this we find is the easy and quick way into the city. We visited the terracotta warriors. It is very popular and it will be unlikely that you will be able to just turn up and be admitted to that exhibition. We booked in advance and even a week ahead we only just got in a slot before we left for home. West Kirby was beautiful with the sands golden and gorgeous. We spend an enjoyable day on the front at Wallasey too. We didn't revisit Port Sunlight, the U-boat museum or the ferry on the Mersey but they are all worth a visit. I noticed that this site was opened by the Earl of Derby in June 1988 so it has just turned thirty. I guess the toilet block was new when opened. It is showing its age. Noisy and dirty extractor fans, loose taps at the sinks, uneven fitting ceiling tiles and small cubicles with the old fashioned white plastic stools to balance clothing on are really not good enough given the prices being asked for. The wardens do their level best to make it all work for us but you cannot make a silk purse out of a sows ear and it is high time this toilet block was replaced. We have just come from Chester Fairoaks. This site and Chester is the same acreage and roughly the same number of pitches and both owned by the Caravan Club Ltd yet Chester has a new toilet block with twice the number of showers and basins and many more service areas dotted around the site. It is time some of our subs was invested in the Wirral site. Lastly there is some noise from overflying aircraft as well as local youths driving fast cars at high speed along Station Road with no regard to the speed bumps, and being a farming area loud bird-scaring noises start up at 5.30am and go well on into the evening. Hopefully some of that will be seasonal. We met some lovely people and hope to return at some point.
