Peaceful stay in a lovely location

Third stay on this lovely site. Scorching hot weather for the whole week we were there. Easy drive to woolacombe and ilfracombe. Mortehoe a bit more difficult on very narrow lane. When we arrived there weren’t many hardstandings left on the upper part of the site - we saw one (pitch 83) which had a cone on it. On asking the warden if we could use that pitch he replied “no” as it was allocated to a disabled member. OK that’s fine (I’m disabled myself by the way). However that pitch was still unoccupied when we left a week later so we could have used it. It used to be first come first served but not any more apparently. The warden also takes up a perfectly good hardstanding pitch near reception (133) with a caravan and a car - the car he uses regularly but as far as we could see no-one uses the van! Again what a waste of a decent pitch when there are plenty of grass pitches he could use to store his caravan. Other than that we had a lovely stay but with a sour taste in the mouth because of the pitch business.

Sunshine and a lovely break.

Having been so pleased with our first visit and to continue our walking in this lovely part of the county we were pleased that all those on site welcomed us and made us feel so at ease. This is a really wonderful site that shows that with such a clean and well cared for environment we will continue to visit again on our travels. We recommend this place for those that want a quiet time.

Had a good time

This was our first visit to this site which came highly recommended by a friend who visits regularly. Upon arrival met by a friendly female warden. The pitch we chose was grass with a slight slope,no big issue there. The toilet. / shower block was the best layout I’ve seen yet on a Club site (it ought to be replicated on all sites). The staff were very friendly and would take time out to have a chat and or assist where they could with any issues. The cleanliness and tidiness of the site as a whole was excellent. The big issue on this site is the download & upload speeds of the WiFi, they were poor. We try to get away from from the gadgets but they sometimes come in handy. There are some good walks to enjoy in the area as well as Woolacombe, Ilfracombe and Croyde Bay to visit and enjoy the beach and dunes. In Woolacombe there is paid on street parking as well as a number of car parks - check the prices first and don’t think the first one you see is the only one, travel further along the road. Whilst we were there a Kestrel perched on the power lines near the reception each day, it looked like it was having 40 winks - got some good photos. While on the Tarka Trail at Mortehoe saw several seals basking in the water at the bottom of the cliff face and others playing. And to top it off the site was peaceful.

Great Site

This was our first visit and found the site to be excellent. Friendly wardens and an excellent toilet block. Site was pretty quiet during our stay and there was a good choice of level pitches - not sure what it would be like when full as some of the grass pitches have got quite a slope on them. Access out of the rear of the site onto a disused railway line/cycle track which serves as the dog walk. It is also possible to walk into Ilfracombe using the track (uphill all the way back!!). Site well located for visiting the area - I was walking the SW Coastal Path so it was easy for 'other half' to drop off and collect. We didn't have children with us so can't comment on that aspect of the site. We had a great stay and will defintely revisit.

Lovely peaceful site

Loved this site. Peaceful, quiet and at the time we visited we had the pick of where to pitch. As we have a motorhome we get about by cycling, walking or catching buses and had no problem with any of these. A gate at the back of the site leads directly onto disused railway line and it was an enjoyable walk or cycle along there in the direction of Ilfracombe. Purchased a map from reception of the local area and had a lovely walk across the fields to Woolacombe - decided to get the bus back though as it would have been quite an uphill climb! Good meal at the Woolacombe Bay Brasserie - would recommend this. Facilities on site are excellent but as always perhaps people could do more to keep them looking immaculate - try just checking the toilet before you leave it to make sure it is how you would like to find it.

First visit, will be back!

We stayed for 11 nights taking in the Bank Holiday and thoroughly enjoyed can our stay. Like others we think the toilet shower block is one of the best we have used, excellent layout, very clean and warm. The beach at Woolacombe was great, our dog enjoyed several walks on the beach, very clealy signposted where dogs are allowed. The pitches were a good size and the site was well looked after by the Wardens. This was our first visit to this part of Devon and we will be coming back as we lliked the area so much.

You will need your car to get places from here

A great site, superb location in a very popular area for holidaymakers at peak times. Instead of focussing on the excellent on-site facilities you expect from a Club site I want to highlight the issues associated with getting anywhere from the site - realistically you will need to use your car for days out, going to the shops or going into Woolacombe. There is a very pleasant old railways track for cycles and walking into Ilfracombe, but at 5 miles it's not suitable for a quick journey by foot. Whilst there is a recommended walking route into Woolacombe, it involves going across fields where the path isn't really clear, and crosses a busy field of cattle which my wife flatly refused to attempt! We tried several options into Woolacombe, following the road route, but the problem is that there are no paths alongside much of the road. I really can't see where the local authority are spending the highways money - certainly not on safe paths. If you have younger children, don't attempt to walk - instead you will need to take your car into Woolacombe, park it at £4 for half a day (or £7 for a full day). We were surprised just how busy Woolacombe gets at peak times - if you do go down in your car, be prepared to be sat in a queue for the final bit of your journey. All the above sounds like a massive gripe and it in no way reflects on the efficient running and operation of the site. Willingcott is a lovely site, but it is not near a beach and at peak times I am sure families will get frustrated at how much time they will have to spend getting anywhere in the car I'm sure off peak visitors will not have an issue with the car problems

Hidden Jem....:-)

What a pleasure from booking in to leaving the wardens were very helpful. The facilities were all of a high standard. Very peaceful site, pitches plenty of space, showers hot and clean can't wait to revisit. I would like to see a variety of food vans on sites if possible.

Lovely site - will definitely return!!

Booked this site, as we love Woolocombe, we weren't disappointed, lovely site, toilets/showers were spotless. Wardens were friendly and couldn't be more helpful. Quiet site and kept nice, pitches were large and well kept. We did walk into Ilfracombe using the cycle path (through back gate),it was a bit of a trek but the dogs loved it, stopped at the reservoir for a swim on the way (dogs not us)!! We will definitely be returning soon.

Amazing site .. wish we'd been there sooner

We've just come back from a weekend here & what a fantastic site. Although helped by the weather this site is spotless. The wardens are really helpful. The toilets and showers are the best I have ever seen, no spiders in there .. absolutely spotless, great hot showers, plenty of room and availability. If I had one criticism .. that is the times they choose to clean them, as not being an early riser .. I had to wait till after 12 for a shower. But this is clearly marked. Lovely walk to Ilfracombe and the pub, the Fortescue was lovely, on the doorstep, good food and they loved the dog.. who had quite a few carvery offcut treats. Landlord very nice. Will definitely visit this & the site again.
