Prison warden

This is my local site which I have visited dozens of times over my 10 years in the club. But this time I arrived and when pitching up I touched the grass with my caravan wheel, whilst setting up I heard someone beside my caravan stamping on the patch of grass I touched and shaking his head. I explained it was a tight pitch to get into and I don't have a motor mover and was on my own and was told off for it like a little child. Then he came over and asked me to move my caravan as it was not in line with the peg (it was 12" off) I said your joking and was told you must move it. I had to raise my steadys and unplug to align my van. This was not done very pleasantly as he never cracks a smile.(shame as the old wardens who had been on this site before were lovely and nothing was a bother) I also noted he went around the site checking new arrivals were also Compliying to the rules. This was always a friendly site but felt very strict and not like a holiday at all. On my last day which was the day before the site closed it was a lovely day as it had rained all weekend, I asked if I could stay on a few more hours(which as never been a problem in the past) and was told point blank NO, not politely but no that's the time. There was only 5 vans staying on the whole site that nite and I was taking nobody's pitch, very harsh I thought. So Mr prison warden thanks after 10 years of visiting that lovely site I will no longer be coming and if this is the way the club is going with its policy's I will not be renewing my membership and will be going to the friendly club

The view from the pitch

I am not sure why this site gets such good reviews. Don't be fooled by the highly selective photos of the site showing far reaching views of Blencathra. We were on the fully serviced pitches and there is no view at all. The pitches seem close together making the whole site feel claustrophobic. The pitch we were allocated was also a lot smaller than most of the others (only 3.2m wide) which made it a tight squeeze for car/van/awning. To make matters worse we were in receipt of a "Keep Off The Grass" sign within hours of arriving. This seems typical of the CC "firm but fair" approach to site management. Maybe a quiet word for the site warden would have been a more tactful approach? We did get mobile and FreeView signals but, unlike other reviewers, we do use the internet a lot to plan our holiday activities, so we do like to be "connected". Given the scale of this site (162 pitches) I would have thought the CC could have afforded to put in WiFi even if it just in the clubhouse. The upsides to the site are that it is clean, has good showers/toilets, is easy to get to and is well placed for walks in and around Keswick. But I don't think this site will make it onto our favourites list.

Good quality great People

We only stayed 18 hours but failed to see any of the surrounding countryside due to fog and a 2 mtr hedge right in front of the only unoccupied suitable pitch. Busy site even 24 hours from season closure. Heated floors in the ageing but adequate facility block, was a treat. Peace was shattered at 6.00am by adjacent caravanner noisily preparing his rig to leave which took 45 mins. Why ? .....no respect for others and completely unacceptable. A pitch with the views as seen on the brochure photo do exist but goodness knows how you get them. Overall, a well run, tidy site with good facilities..

Yes and no

Lovely location and great wardens  but because of the location some of the pitches get very waterlogged. Also, if your on EE then phone signal is an issue and is either available at the bottom of the site or at the gate / cattle grid. The most annoying point was no wifi. Having to go off site and no wifi can be classed as a good thing but if you have to contact anyone it's a bit of a pain.

Perfect location great site

Troutbeck is an excellent site with first class amenities and great staff. It's close proximity to Rookinghall stables and adventure park make it the perfect location for an adventure and activity holiday. We spent a couple of evenings with friends who live in the Lakes at the Sportsmen pub which is about 5 minutes from the site great food and great service, the beer is not bad either. Close to the site is a very pretty and well stocked trout like if you are a fly fisherman take you gear the fish fight hard and taste lovely! All in all a great break in the Lakes we will be back. Thanks to everyone at Troutbeck who made our break so much fun.

A jewel in the Lake District

We have just returned from a week spent at Troutbeck CC site. A fabulous time was had by all, we had been before and weren't disappointed this time either. We had a fully serviced pitch at the top end of the site. The site is ideally positioned for access to the whole Lake District area. Easily accessed from the A66 and with the M6 and A1 nearby it is a shame not to visit. We used the good weather at the beginning of the week to complete the full walk around Derwent Water and a walk around Buttermere. The drive to Buttermere includes the spectacular views across Honister Pass. The weather wasn't great on Wednesday but we got outside everyday. Even off site there are plenty of Forestry commission pathways to explore and we clocked up a 4 mile plus ramble up through the trees and across the hillsides. As we were leaving today we could see the the site was getting ready to close for the winter but already we are planning our next trip to Troutbeck. The staff are very helpful and are always around if help is needed. The games room was a hit for the kids in the wet weather and we have discovered that we love table tennis! Well done to all who are responsible for the site and keeping it going.

Very Helfull Wardens

Troutbeck Head is in a lovely place and the site is a good base for fell walkers and to explore the northern lakes. We had a problem (of our own making) and the wardens were brilliant. Very nice and very helpful.

Beautiful site

Only stayed one night, en route to Scotland, but have stayed there in the past. Lovely site, friendly staff. The dog walk is fantastic. The location for the northern lakes, and Keswick is second to none. The toilet blocks are clean, but in dire need of being upgraded, especially when compared to our next stop Culloden Moor.

Beautiful

Only stayed for 1 night, en route back to Scotland. Great site, very quiet, and facilities were excellent. Wardens were very friendly and the site was well kept, although dated, the toilets and showers were clean and warm. Great site and we will be back!
