Stayed for three nights at the beginning of May, on route for Scotland. We have visited several times before but always on a service pitch. This time as it was only a few days we tried the other half of the site with standard pitches. This area is more sheltered than the service area with good views of the hills. It even has an O2 phone signal, which is not available in the service pitch section. Site roads are fairly narrow in this area and it would be difficult to place the van on the pitch without doing damage to the grass, which was very soft, without a power mover, which fortunately we have. A good 2 hour walk can be taken directly from the site into the Matterdale Forest (replanted after felling) and on to Matterdale end, about 5 miles circuit. As the weather was not really good enough for hill walking we also visited Acorn Bank (National Trust) and Brougham Castle (English Heritage) both a short distance east of Penrith off the A66. Both well worth a visit.
