Welcome break

Just returned from 6 nights stay enjoyed the serviced pitch worth the extra cost with covid 19 around Site as good as ever despite some heavy rain and winds The walk from the site to dockray is well worth a go lovely views and you go passed a good start off point for fell walks,the royal in dockray well worth a visit for food or just a glass of wine/beer . Staff doing a good job inthe current climate more than happy with procedures in place to deal with covid restrictions Happy to return Pete/Karen

Great location and site layout

This was our first visit here and we enjoyed our 10 days. We were pleased to have booked a non-services pitch, as those seemed to have fewer views. Those near the bottom end of the park and those by the river did get vey wet or flooded, but them we did have much rain in early September. Out pitch was very level and well drained. Phone signal was not great but a walk towards the exit improved this. We would certainly return.

Beautiful location but need transport for any visits

We stayed here in Aug/ Sep 2020 for 5 nights - one of the few sites in the Lake District with some spaces still available - probably because it is a bit isolated, and you need your car/ transport to visit any attractions (i.e. nothing within walking distance, except neighbouring activity centre). What we liked: a) beautiful location - you really feel the best of the Lake District all around you; b) good layout with generous sized pitches - site feels small & intimate (despite having over 100 pitches); c) close proximity by car to Keswick, Penrith and Ullswater; d) facilities kept very clean; e) enjoyed short evening walks around the site What we disliked: a) cannot walk to any activity directly from the site (apart from neighbouring activity centre) - have to use car to go to any village/ town/ pub etc. We tried walking cross country to the Troutbeck Inn which proved to be a disaster (no clear footpaths; boggy/ marshy ground etc.); b) a little overzealous with the Covid-19 restrictions in toilet blocks - only 2 male & 2 female toilets available in each block, despite being protected any way by enclosed toilet & shower cubicles - but I guess the Club does not want to take any risks (health & safety) We will definitely stay here again, but probably for fewer nights, because we prefer sites where we can leave the campervan parked up and walk directly to local walks, pubs, villages.

A nice site but at the more expensive end of site fees

This site carried a 33% fee premium over sites we had stayed prior in the week, which was surprising. It is a very nice site with modern toilet blocks and good pitch layout. The area by the stream is a little more contained and when you venture into the main part, there is a sense of being on top of one another. Set in spectacular scenery, you will be at the mercy of the weather but if the sun shines then this is a fabulous place to be. It is isolated though with only the (occasionally noisy) Adventure Centre next door. You'll need to drive to access anything. As others have said the COVID restrictions around toilet block seemed a little more severe than necessary and there were the usual non-compliance issues with wristband management. Overall worth a return - perhaps only for a couple of nights though. Wardens were really really helpful and visible through the stay

Lovely weekend

The check-in was the most professional I have ever experienced and the site is immaculate. The staff were very friendly and helpful and we will certainly visit again. Top marks!

Flooding & Noise.

The Lake District is our favourite place to visit in England and we were pleased with this site's proximity to Keswick (and Penrith for food shopping). However, we were unlucky in our choice of pitch. We had read the online advice to avoid the riverside pitches due to midges and went to the other side of the site. An activity centre was located on the other side of the hedge from us and every day there was noise from quad bikes. On the day we arrived, there was also gunfire, presumably from clay pigeon shooting. Unfortunately, Storm Francis resulted in heavy rain and the drain on the opposite pitch from us burst, resulting in a stream of water flowing (slightly) downhill to our pitch. We had an awning up with a bedroom annexe. We had to wade through three inches of cold, brown water to get to the caravan door and, due to the volume of water, the bedroom annexe did suffer some water ingress, despite its waterproof base. The people on the opposite pitch moved, though they didn't seem to be much affected by the water. We took the decision to stay put as the rain continued all day and it would have taken a long time to dismantle and re-install our awning and annexe. The site managers/owners knew of the problem with the drain, as they called out a specialist who couldn't fix the problem until the following day, due, presumably, to the amount of water flowing out of the drain. At no point did they come and see us to empathise or update us as to what was happening. Due to having wet shoes, awning, carpets, mats, etc, we decided to cut short our five day holiday and came home after three days. Not a great experience. We have since tried to speak to the site managers, as it appears we have lost some Club pre-paid vouchers while on site but they have not returned our call, despite leaving our details on their voicemail.

Beautiful site

Had a week at Troutbeck. Although the weather was terrible for August even in the Lakes the site was spotless. Nice size pitches with clean proper stone gravel (not the cheap stuff that gets everywhere). Staff helpful, one even finished our laundry for us. If you want to explore you really need a car so we took a tow car and we're glad. Can recommend the Lake District Wildlife Park and Alpacaly Ever After locally, our little boy loved both.

lovely couple of days

Really nice couple of days - our 1st visit to this site and the staff were really helpful on arrival - we had our pick of a number of plots and were able to get one with a view of Blencathra - walked to Dockray and on to Aira Force - showers and toilets were really good however can see that if the site was busy the number of toilets temporarily available may cause an issue ... also used our own toilet in the Motorhome .... despite the weather an excellent stay.

A very rainy 2nd visit

Just returned from a 4 night stay at this site (2 adults, 2 children, a baby and a dog). It is the second time we have stayed here and the 2nd time we have suffered with the weather :-( I don't think the Lakes weather wants us to enjoy our visits here! The site itself is lovely and peaceful and well maintained with cracking view of Blencathra, if you're lucky enough to see it and it's not covered in mist/clouds. Good dog walking areas both on and off site. Great location for walking - we visited Aira Force and Whinlatter Forest - both excellent nearby vsitor attractions. There is an activity centre next door providing outdoor activities suitable for the whole family and although you can at times hear quad bikes, horses and clay pigeon shooting, it didn't disturb us. Unfortunately due to the Covid pandemic and social distancing, facilities on the site were not 100% operational. Only 2 out of 4 toilets and 2 out of 4 showers were in operation in the toilet block closest to us. Guests are provided with wrist bands when they arrive. When you use the facilities, you are supposed to hang the wristband outside on a hook before going in and then collecting it on the way out. If there is no room left on the hooks, you know there is no room inside and have to wait outside. This is supposed to assist people with social distancing. Unfortunately it didn't work like it should have. Most of the time people were either going in without leaving their wristband on the hook, or forgetting to collect it on the way out. There was often a queue at most times of day - for both toilet blocks. I felt for the size of the site, the number of toilets and showers in use wasn't enough. Perhaps lowering the capacity for the site might assist. We don't normally use our personal onboard facilities, however, on this occasion felt we didn't have much choice with young children. There was also only room for one family in the dishwashing room. It should also be noted that the games room for the youngsters is currently closed. It doesn't state this on the site's website, although upon my return home, I did read on a FAQ page that all games rooms are closed. My fault for not checking beforehand but I think it should be made clearer for guests at the point of booking to avoid any disappointment. On one of our days there was a bad sewage smell. We put this down to the torrential rain the day before and we saw a couple of workmen unblocking the drains behind our van which seemed to rectify the problem. We are hoping when we finally return to our old normal way of life that we can comeback to Troutbeck Head, as it is a beautiful area with lots to do - and fingers crossed the sun shines for us next time.

First time, maybe again?

Small site with not much nearby. It was quite noisy with children, dogs and also an activity centre and farm directly next to the site with numerous quad bikes and vehicles early and late at night. We think the price is very expensive for what you get.
