Nice camp site

Wardens were really friendly and helpful. Was able to walk to the town but a bit of a struggle as I don't walk very well. beautiful little town with quaint shops. Lots to do and things to see.

Best dog site

Excellent site. Spotlessly clean facilities. Superb for our two working cockers. They loved the field and were disappointed to return home. Spot on fish and chips from van on site. Good dog friendly pub The Fox and Hounds at Cotherston, just up the road, recommend the pork platter!! Will be back soon.

Nice site But.

Nice site, friendly staff, but distance to Barnard Castle may be half a mile as the crow flies but: Be aware that walking is much further and, there is a 1 in 10 hill from the site to the bottom of the hill then a steeper hill into Barnard Castle. Fine if your young and fit but for the over 80's a bit much. Once was enough for my wife.

Fantastic few days

Lovely site, with friendly wardens. Some road noise, but less than we're used to (and we live in the country).  Super walk into Barnard - a lovely market town, with independent shops. Market on Wednesday. Loved the savoury Chelsea buns from the Moody Baker! Great walks for the dog, by the river and roundabout.  Enjoyed 15 mile drive to Bowlees, to walk up to High Force waterfall and back. Looking forward to returning.

A lovely big field with paths cut in long grass.there is also a wooded and stream walk just outside the bottom gate, paths a little awkward on the way down, as there has been a land slip.but worth it.

Can't keep away

This is a site which we can't keep away from. We find it wonderful in every way - short walk to Barnard Castle (a lovely old town), great facilities, some lovely pitches, and among the most welcoming and friendly wardens to be found at any site. It is also perhaps the best site I know for road cycling (lots of quiet roads, starting at the site entrance, with plenty of ups and downs but nothing too steep). Also a brilliant site for offroad running - along either side of the Tees upstream and lots of other paths too. Having visited many times I have yet to explore all them.

Our First Trip

We chose Teesdale for our very first trip in our first tourer and what a great choice it was. We were greeted by 2 very friendly CC representatives who explained which pitches were available. We have a motor mover so it was great to find a pitch opposite the woodland and we were able to face that way too. The toilets and shower block were immaculately clean. Wonderful 4 acre meadow for dog walking & we found a brilliant dog friendly pub - The Old Well in Barnard Castle. We'll definitely be back :)

Pros and cons in a green and pleasant land

Barnard Castle CC site is half a mile from the town that gives it its name - a rare phenomenon at CC sites bearing a town’s name. I took 14 minutes to walk to the centre using the footbridge over the strikingly attractive Tees, glistening in the sun, and the footpath up the hill to the castle. It is a peaceful site set between the B6277 and a wooded area leading down to Deepdale Beck with a sinister looking young offenders institute beyond that (although this is little in evidence). It is a pleasant setting with much greenery, and on two levels, but there are no views as trees dominate the scene. My serviced pitch was good, but they faced a six-foot hedge; so there’s not even a view of the rest of the site. I was disappointed with that. They are also near the toilet block; this is often so, presumably for logistics, but, given the premium (one adult just shy of £25 per night), they should be in the best places. Two of them are next door to the block with all the comings and goings and noise of hand blowers that that entails. Even the lovely warden who greeted me suggested I avoided these. The road is not that busy and this cast not the slightest negative for me, but I know some find even a trace of traffic noise an anathema and, if in this extreme category, you may be discouraged. But you can choose a pitch further away from, and below, the road. I don’t have dogs, but I walked the super dog walk with mown paths in an adjacent field. TV reception here was the best I have had since the digital era began. I’m serious. Not a hint of loss of signal, at any point, and the full raft of Freeview channels including superb HD reception - and this through my own Status aerial after trying unsuccessfully to make use of the TV point on the electric stand. 4G here is excellent and definitely better than your average CC WiFi experience so I did not test the WiFi here. Being near the town is the attraction of this site, especially for those with motorhomes and no means of transport. It is a delightful little town set on a hilltop and with some good shops. Little remains of the castle, but it is worth visiting nonetheless. I also visited the Bowes Museum; this requires a lot of time to do it justice but if you like ceramics and art it is well worth it. The main bus routes from the town go to Darlington, Bishop Auckland and Middleton in Teesdale – this latter bus passing the site. There’s some good cycling too for those with the energy but inevitably there are hills! If I had a car, visiting the region for a week or two, I would choose to prefer the nearby Richmond Hargill House site to this one; it is a much prettier site, with a bright open aspect and beautiful views. But it is 4 miles from Richmond, with a limited bus service, and the somewhat intrusive A66 is a nuisance for some, if not for me. You pays your money and takes your choice! I was content here, at Teesdale Barnard Castle, albeit that, in my view, the site comes up short of exceptional.

Can't wait to return!

Stopped over here on our way to/from Norfolk recently and having nothing but praise for everything. Great wardens, beautiful site, fantastic and spotlessly clean facilities. We will definitely be returning for a longer stay some time. Far enough away from Barnard Castle to make you feel like you're in the sticks, but a 10-15min walk will have you in the town - which is lovely. If you're on the high side of the site you'll hear some traffic noise - not an issue for us, but if you like it really quiet, bear this in mind. Overall a fantastic site.
