Good on-route stopover site

We drove down from Inverness to visit Stirling castle and by the end of the visit it was near 6pm, so decided to stop locally rather than drive through the evening to Chatsworth and wild camp. Fortunately this site is only around 30 minuets from Stirling Castle so a great overnighter. The signing in warden was officious but then it is a club training venue. (I appreciate the processes are in place to guarantee consistency of the brand, but it is a little irritating to be spoken to like a newby 'every time') Luckily most wardens are able to read the person in front of them and adjust the process accordingly. As you would expect the site is immaculately clean and prepared, a little noisy as it's so close to the motorway but not so load that you'll be bothered inside your motorhome or caravan. The dog walk is quite a nice wooded stroll around the storage compound and it's only a short 3-4 minute walk to the local Toby carvery. All in all a very good way point on route to somewhere, though possibly not somewhere to spend much more time..

Good transit site.

We made an overnight stop at this site on both our outward and return journeys on a tour of Scotland’s west coast. The site is conveniently situated beside the M74, is modern and well laid out with hard standing pitches along curved roadways giving varied aspects i.e. not in regimented rows. We received a friendly welcome from the wardens on both visits. Unfortunately the site’s location is both its triumph and its downfall. As highlighted by many reviewers there is, inevitably, a constant hum of traffic noise from the motorway and whilst this subsides a little overnight if you don’t have all your hatches ‘battened down’ it may well disturb your sleep. It’s close proximity to Glasgow with easy road and rail links makes it a useful base to explore the city but the description of the location as a ‘Country Park’ we found misleading. It is rather, a large urban park on the outer edge of the city. In summary we consider this to be an ideal ‘transit site’ but is not one at which we would choose to stay again other than on an overnight stop.

First visit

We were first time visitors last week. It's a well laid out, level site with excellent facilities and friendly wardens. Its location near the M74 makes it somewhat noisy, particularly at peak times, which may put off some. More irritating were the local boy racers driving around the Country Park in the evenings. We explored the local Country Park and also Chapelherault a few miles away, excellent for the dog. We lunched out on two days. The Applebank Inn near Larkhall and overlooking the Avon Water is worth a visit. Overall a positive experience and we plan to return.

Well maintained, great location for stopover.

  • I stayed here only one night on my way further north and, unfortunately, a problem with my van meant I spent most of the afternoon sorting that and got little time to explore. Nonetheless, I saw enough to be able to say that this is an extremely well maintained, well-manicured site which I thought also very well designed with roads and pitches laid out mostly in curves to avoid regimentation - not that the latter especially bothers me, but it is good to see other ways of doing things.
  • As a stopover the location is superb being less than half a mile from the M74.
  • I had time to cycle into the country park, but near the site this is busy and commercial and not for me. There is a theme park, various dubious looking eateries, and I found rowdy young “men behaving badly”; some playing ridiculously loud music, another letting off some kind of smoke bomb! I am sure more distant parts of the park are better. For some, especially with children the theme park is a positive.
  • The location of course means there’s a bit of traffic noise and there’s some slight aircraft intrusion too - from Glasgow. Personally I am unaffected by these sounds and accept it willingly in preference to highly irritating, ill-behaved dogs and noisy al-fresco diners.
  • The downside for me of this place is that it is a huge site and my preference is always more towards the smaller, more intimate, places. It also has a very large camping field; I don’t think I would want to be here in the height of summer. Moreover, for a motorhomer who pitches and stays pitched, getting out and about does not look that easy.
  • Great for a stopover is my conclusion, but I would not stay here for long.

good for a city break

stayed here for 3 nights, Yes you can hear the traffic during the day and it is a constant hum but quietens off quite a bit on a night and never disturbed my sleep. Great site for exploring Glasgow, I used the park and ride train service from Bellshill 1.5 miles from the site which had free parking and was £4.50 return to the city centre and took 18 mins. The supermarkets and petrol stations are all within a few minutes drive. The site is in Strathclyde country park which is great for walking or water sports also there is a theme park next door and also a Toby carvery pub just over the road. The site itself was very tidy and the facilities very clean.

You can hear it

Stayed one night en route north, which was enough for us - you can hear the traffic noise and it seemed pretty constant. But handy for trips into Glasgow or further afield and the Country Park walk was pleasant, notwithstanding the proximity of the M74. Philanmary

Noisy and not worth the money

Stayed here recently after a 6 hour drive. Had to sit and wait at the barrier due to no one being available until 1pm. Place is clean but due to location of motorway which is convenient, there is no chance of having a peaceful night sleep. Kids play area is ok and place is clean and tidy it is not worth paying over £30 a nigh for. Avoid and find somewhere better.

Super Site for short and longer stays

As part of our tour of Scotland we stayed at 26 Campsites and after this experience, we rate Strathclyde as the „Number 1“, site layout, site maintainable, site status, facilities and for certain the helpful and friendly staff. We will recommend this site to friends and if in the region, definitely call back in to Strathclyde again. P.S. the flags on the entrance welcome all, except the Swiss.

One night stopover

We stayed here for one night on our way further north. It is one of the most attractive sites with all the planting the wardens have done. There are flowers round every corner and unusual planters all around. It really looks well cared for. The facilities are good and the dog walk excellent. It isn't the most peaceful site as there is a lot of road noise because of its location. We walked around the nearby lake which was ok and well used by both walkers and cyclists. We would use again but only as a stopover because of the noise levels.

Great Stop off on M74

We stopped off on our way north and again on returning south. Very convenient to the M74 and to a number of places of local interest. Also there is the lake in the park with its Roman bathhouse remains. But beaware of the constant buzz from the M74 and A735 which cross by the site!
