Once again fabulous .

Just returned from another fabulous stay. Can't recommend Martin and the wardens enough for there hard work & determination to keep things safe during this very testing time . Every aspect of the site is kept spotlessly clean , grass ,hedges , toilets, laundry, etc . Been visiting this site for a long time ,as we love the island & will defo return, wouldn't stay any were else . I don't normally criticise this site , but do to covid I would like to share my thoughts , I understand the importance of H/S however, 9 showers ,3 open ,6 toilets 3 open , urinals closed ,so have to use toilets for just a wee . Do think there could have been a little more thought in this area . Still has to be one of the best sites on the net work though.

The Wardens did well

I would like to praise the wardens for doing so much to make our stay as normal as possible in the Covid 19 period. They are after all front line workers in cleaning and servicing the customers and their facilities. The washrooms and washing up facilities were much reduced to allow for social distancing. I felt that they were a bit too restricted and had possibly been over reduced. For example, there was only one washing up sink available. Queues appeared at various times for all facilities even with people trying to use their own onboard as much as possible. Overall a lot of give and take was required but the result was that we had a very enjoyable stay, so many thanks to the wardens and stay safe.

Weeks Holiday

We have stayed at Southlands on a number of times and really enjoy our stays. Greeted in a friendly and efficient way and given instructions on the new covid measures. At all times we felt secure and were happy with the band system for using the toilet and shower facilities. The site is in an ideal place to get around the island with lots to do. We were in the area whcih had the hard standings which some people thought it was okay to travel at speed, even though it was pointed out to us on arrival to stick to the speed limit.

Excellent site

Stayed at Southland Caravan Site for 5 nights from 9th September - 2 adults and a dog. Wardens very friendly and were happy to help when we had a snag with our electric hook-up - we now know to insert cable and twist! Facilities were spotless and the extra restrictions in place worked well. Only very small criticism is regarding dog walk as it is quite small especially as our dog loves to run free and chase a ball. We had to take him off site in our campervan everyday to find a place to walk him - no shortage of places for this on the lovely Isle of Wight. On the whole enjoyed our stay and would recommend to anyone wanting a quiet base from which to explore the Island.

Lovely site, beaches not close by

We stayed here for a week and had a great time. We walked and cycled from the site. We used the buses (free travel with English bus pass after 9.30) to go to the Needles and to Ryde. Bus journeys were quite lengthy but these were good days out. The Red Squirrel cycle trail was nearby but the loop from Shanklin is mainly off road and not very suitable for road bikes. There is a steep hill to climb in Newchurch! The two nearest pubs both served great food and welcomed dogs. The Pedallers cafe, and the Garlic farm, both within walking distance, also had great food and were very popular. The pitches were of varied sizes, some people did not have their awnings on the correct side and nobody seemed to bother about this. We were not impressed when a couple set up with their awning facing ours. Other people seemed to grab a lot of space for themselves with massive beach screens in addition to their awning. I have never seen this happening at any other club site. In fact, I have seen wardens being very strict elsewhere. The wardens were doing a great job clearing the paths and re- seeding the dry patches where ground sheets had been. They were very welcoming and pleasant. The dog walk was the best I have experienced at any Caravan club site. Our only grumble was that there was no local shop for basics and nothing available at the site due to covid restrictions.

We will be back!

We really enjoyed our stay at Southland. The site is very well maintained. The Wardens were super friendly. So much to do on the Island, we have already booked for 2021! Great dog walk area on the site. Thank you Southland for a lovely holiday!

The noisiest club site we’ve ever stayed on! How many machines??

Stayed for a week August bank holiday. Site is level with areas divided up and sheltered by tall well kept hedges. Too well kept. Well groomed grass. Too well groomed. Lots of bins. Too many bins. This was the problem really; never a moments peace from 0900 to 1700, when the wardens are out and about riding their tractor and trailer to service the bins, then riding the mower to mow individual pitches when folk have left and then using strimmers , hedge trimmers, leaf blowers and other noisy petrol powered machines throughout the remainder of the working day manicuring the site. And if the noise from the wardens wasn’t enough, the local airfield were having helicopter pleasure flights over the bank holiday weekend. Isn’t it time to use something quieter to pull the little rubbish trailer about such as a golf cart? Or reduce the number of bins so folk carry their own rubbish to the main skips? Works on other sites. Didn’t use the facilities other than the laundry which was Covid secure. In this time of Covid, we can’t expect to use club site facilities: apart from the tent campers, we are mostly all self contained.

Could do better!

Totally agree with other recent reviews regarding the lack of toilet / shower facilities. Even at full capacity there isn't enough compared to other club sites. We stayed at Rookesbury prior to staying here and they used a different system which worked perfectly. They issued every pitch with a pink and a blue (numbered with the pitch number)wristband, a limited number of hooks were placed outside the facilities and if they were full you could not enter. Because the bands were specific to your pitch people actually bothered to use them. Here they were only cleaned once a day which is clearly inadequate at the moment especially when so few showers / toilets were open in the first place on such a big site. We mainly used our own facilities but occasionally it would have been good to use the site ones. We also had a issue with another member as they were keeping a bull mastiff in a cage in the awning annex all day from early hours until late evening in the heat while they were off site. In fact we only actually saw it twice outside during the whole week. We raised our concerns about its welfare to the wardens who agreed it should not be left in there. They did speak to the owner but nothing was done and it remained in there for the rest of their stay. As a fellow dog owner we were disappointed with the outcome. We would probably not use this site again if we visit the Isle of Wight.

Lacking Usual Standards -

Although the site is located very well with easy access to the bike trail and Sandown beach, our experience of the site was disappointing by the usual standards of a club site. We visited in August with the site mostly full during our 2 weeks, with many families using the facilities. We have visited two other sites and have found the covid measures implemented with a band system to work well, but leaving only 3 toilets/showers at a full site of probably about 150 pitches and one washing up sink free made it very difficult. The system just did not work as people got so frustrated with waiting that they often just went into the toilet, ignoring how many people were in. At times we felt crowded in the facilities with people queuing in the bathroom block and even using the hand dryer as a hairdryer. The facilities are also only cleaned once a day so they were often dirty by the time next cleaning and at times no toilet roll as so few toilets used by so many people. We did offer feedback to the reception re-cleaning and general overcrowding but the answer was they were not paid to clean anymore and the club had advised people not to use the facilities, so best not to use them. We have certainly limited our use, but it was not at any time when booking made clear to us or on any of the other club sites we have visited that facilities were not to be used and for families with children it would be quite difficult not to. as suggested in other reviews the site was too full fo the very limited facilities in use and therefore led to overcrowding and unsafe, unclean facilities.

Ridiculous Limits on Facilities

Large facilities block. Large queues! Once again, people queuing for toilets whilst others took leisurely showers. More cubicles blocked off than necessary. Although some would question why block off any at all. Doesn't make for a relaxing holiday. Drop the restrictions or cap the numbers you're allowing on site - you can't fill a site to capacity then close two thirds of the facilities! I've stayed at sites where you were left to use common sense and make your own judgement of risk - this 'pandemic' has brought out the very worst in authoritarians, wanting to make up petty rules and restrict others.
