Ferry and stay for us

Briefly to say that as we stay mostly on Club sites, we chose this package as it ticked all our boxes. We caravan and get out and about every day. There is a lot to see on the Island and even having visited every year for eight years (not always caravan) we have yet to exhaust its delights. Check out some of the exceptional small restaurants - some of the pubs are very 'samie'.

Blackpool Illuminations

Very helpful warden on arrival. Did everything possible to accommodate our stay longer than 3 nights. Apologised for only having 3 nights available, which we were thankful for on the first night. We had set up our awning and went out to a local pub to eat- had a lovely meal and went back to the site. It was dark when we arrived but there was good lighting on the site - that us until we got near the vans - horrendously and unbelievably an eyesore for CCC to allow tacky bright lights around caravans and awnings.... plus some had poles up height with flickering LED coloured lights. Pictures on request for the ugly site we had directly facing us. It was no use complaining as it was obvious these Blackpool illuminations were allowed. Spoilt my first outing as a new member.

Location disappointing

As others have said, this is a lovely site with good sized pitches. The grass pitches in particular were in short hedged rows giving plenty of shelter. The facilities were good with plentiful showers kept spotlessly clean. The staff were pleasant and helpful and did a good job maintaining the site. But, the location is not I believe suitable for motorhomes, unless they want to drive off the site every day, which is what many did having no alternative. We had hoped to use our bikes and the local buses, but neither were satisfactory. The bus stop outside the site had one bus per day at 9.30am. To access the other bus stop with an hourly service it was necessary to walk about 15 to 20 minutes along a narrow lane with no pavement or grass verge on either side and plenty of fast moving traffic. Cycling was worse. The Red Squirrel trail is about a mile from the site entrance, but to return to the site from the trail there is a 16% (according to the sign) gradient that would test the fittest professional cyclist. My powerful electric bike failed to make the climb on a narrow bendy lane with the cars close behind. For the site information to say the site is good for cycling without mentioning this gradient is disingenuous by the club. To walk off the site the problems are the same as getting to the bus stop. We did manage to get to the Pointers pub in the village where the food was excellent, perhaps the highlight of our stay. So, we cut short our stay and changed our ferry crossing to return early having been disappointed with the information supplied by the club.

Ferry & Stay Deal

This is a pleasant and peaceful site run by friendly wardens. The site is nicely laid out with neatly maintained tall hedges offering privacy if needed. The island is generally well served by buses however see comments on location of stops below. There were at least 13 grass pitches taken out for re-seeding when we arrived severely limiting where we could pitch. We believe this is due to ground sheets being left down too long and completely killing the grass. The washroom facility is large although this is a big site and when full would mean queuing. The site leaflet says the bus stops outside, yes it does but that particular bus only runs once per day. To access the regular service you have to walk to Amazon World Zoo - 15 minute walk - along country lanes with no footpaths so you do need to be aware of traffic from both directions particularly during busy periods. Both pubs mentioned are along the same or similar lanes so you do need to be careful walking. The majority of people drove their vehicles out for the day which we assume is due to a lack of footpaths. We have never before seen so many motorhomes leaving site on a daily basis. We were considering taking our bikes but glad we didn't as the roads are pretty busy as one or two previous reviewers have commented on.

Really lovely site

What a really lovely site. The wardens were very friendly and really helpful. The little ones had a great time playing in both the play ground and around the site in general. And if given the chance we too could have sat down and enjoyed the surroundings, that were extremely well kept and clean and tidy.

Great for families

Stayed for 4 nights in August, great clean well maintained site. Nice choice of serviced gravel pitches aswell as grass pitches with lots of hedging. Great play area for kids, plus they put out a few lawn games near the shop. Would visit again.

Fabulous Few Days

What a beautiful site! We booked for three days, two campervans and Sid the dog. We were hoping to get two pitches together but were unable to on our first night however the lady with the blond hair went above and beyond the call of duty in helping us achieve it for our other two days. So helpful and I forgot to get her name!! The site itself is immaculate as are the facilities. Lots of information of whats on around and about. We preferred the grass pitches which had more privacy with lovely hedges surrounding them and Sid loved the dog walking area near the playground just a shame that other dog owners were not so respectful and left their dog mess for others to clear up!!! Will definitely return

Excellent site

Excellent site, we stayed in a hard standing pitch which was very roomy. As usual with CAMC, facilities were very clean. Staff very welcoming, we arrived earlier than the ‘arrival time’ due to unintentionally getting on earlier ferry. We were allowed to check in and pitch up, so that was a bonus! Pointer Inn and Fighting Cocks are both nearby and serve excellent food and ale. Plenty to see and do in area. Note: Red Squirrel Trail for cycling IS NOT family friendly, if with youngish children, as quite a bit of it is on busy roads with steep hills (some winding), the rest is on disused rail tracks and across fields etc All in all a great holiday and the site is a credit to the wardens who work really hard keeping it clean and tidy.

Super Southland

Well maintained site with nice big grass pitches and neat hedges. Some road noise can be heard if pitched next to road. Unfortunately not really able to walk out of site easily due to lack of paths. Village doesn't have many paths either and no shops only a pub. Though we did manage to walk to Sandown from out the back of the site and using the red squirrel trail. We also walked to the Garlic Farm and there is a great little plant nursery to walk to, turn left out of the site & left at the lane (not too much traffic!)

Beautiful site - some suggestions

This is a really lovely site in a beautiful part of the world- we had a really lovely holiday. I would just like to raise two issues - I was concerned that some people in addition to pitching a large awning then do a ‘land grab’ by constructing a fenced in area which covers as much area as the awning. I think in most cases this is probably to create a dog pen but as I seem to recall Club rules state that dogs should be on a lead - something we always respect when our dog is outside the awning. Secondly I would like to raise the issue of flags- there seems to be something of a competition going on to see who can erect the largest pole with some kind of flag/ mobile/ kite on top. I suspect there may be an issue of ‘flag envy’ going on with a my pole is bigger than your pole mentality. These flags are obtrusive and I suspect unwelcome by many Club members- I hope the Club bans these poles/flags
