Mixed Feelings

This was our first visit to the Isle of Wight. We knew that like most sites that we wouldn't be able to check in until after 12 noon and had registered for the "fast check in" which is being trialed at this site. We arrived at around 1130hrs and parked up. The site has a massive forecourt which was literally empty. We used the facilities as we'd had a long journey and had quick look at pitch availability. As we made our way back to our van at approximately 1145hrs we were confronted by a female staff member asking whether one of the now two vehicles on the forecourt was ours. We said yes and would she like us to move, expecting her to say no, to which she said yes as they were "expecting 20 arrivals" and couldn't have a queue out onto the road! She also asked the motorhome behind us to move and when told it was too big to turn around she replied that she would open the gates and he could turn around in the site!! Feeling a bit put out we travelled 5 mins down to the road to Goddard's brewery, had a quick look round, came back and then on the dot of 1201hrs we entered the site! The large van was still there so not sure whether he did move and there was one other car. We set up and then walked to the brewery passing reception where there was now NO ONE waiting to check in which remained the case for the 4 days we were there. Although 20 arrivals may have been anticipated (although I'm not sure this was accurate given the site was pretty full) the likelihood of them all arriving on the dot on 1200hrs is very small. We have been to other CAMC sites where we have arrived a few minutes early and have been allowed to wait and not effectively told to "get lost". We understand there are rules but we have never been made to feel so unwelcome at a CAMC site. As a result we didn't interact with any of the staff members for fear of breaching yet another rule (CAMC seem to love a rule) and incurring another telling off. No queue for showers (water was hot) or toilets but we had to queue on a couple of occasions for washing up facilities and the water was lukewarm. Location of the site is good if you want to explore via bus or as we did by bike on the Red Squirrel trail. If you plan to eat at the pub down the road then book in advance as inside tables are limited. We'd like to say we'd go back but given the shoddy "welcome" we probably won't which is a shame.

Super Southland Site

This is our third year running staying at Southland. Checkin is brilliant - love the fast track facility and it’s great not having to handle find each time we go in and out. We requested a particular pitch - although we were told it couldn’t be guaranteed - it was lovely to see our request had been granted. Easy level walk to the facilities for someone with mobility issues - thank you so much to the site team. The site is ideally positioned to visit anywhere on the island - nothing is too far away. We particularly loved our coffee at Harvey Browns or Garlic Farm. Lunch was lovely at Quarr Abbey and we didn’t need to sit long in the hide to spot a red squirrel. We also ate at the Fighting Cocks which was around five mins drive away, the lifeboat at east Cowes, crab and lobster at Bembridge. Osborne house and Carrisbrooke Castle are must visits for us. Our two dogs love the beaches at Apply, Yaverland, and St Helens. We will definitely be back for our fourth visit next year.

Our first visit and will definitely return!

This was our first visit to the Isle of Wight and we weren’t disappointed - the site was in a good location for exploring the whole island. An immaculately kept site - beautifully maintained with spotless facilities, and a team of very friendly and helpful staff. We decided to extend our stay and the staff very helpfully held a pitch for us over a weekend, until we could change our ferry crossing once the booking office was open on the Monday morning. We will definitely be returning ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Well run site with good facilities

After all the rain this year we were concerned to be on a grass pitch but this proved not to be an issue and all credit to the maintenance team who have obviously been working very hard. The site is excellent quality with good facilities. A minor point, but it was good to be able to have a shower without having to keep pressing a start button. Cleaning standards are very high both in the shower block and in the washing up area. The road network on the Isle of Wight did prove to be a challenge for us even with a relatively short 7M motorhome and we did envy the caravanners who were able to go off in their vehicles. We ended up hiring a car to have more flexibility as there lots of places we wanted to visit. In addition to the better known sights we found that lunch at the garlic farm was an interesting experience. So message to self - do more research before visiting somewhere new as I now understand that we could have made better use of public transport even with our dog who was allowed to travel on the buses. The difficulty in getting around is the only reason I didn't say we would certainly visit again. Thank you to the team running the site.

Everything you need and fast track entry,, bonus

Location perfect for getting around the isle. Use the customer service contact number and they managed a fast better deal with crossing and stay than I could find on line. The isle is great everything is your active, cycling, walking, water sports. Local attractions available to accommodate all from national trust windmills to designated cycle routes to a zoo. Not forgetting the dinosaur experience at the needles. Will go back again at some stage, still so much to see. Great visit

Excellent campsite - really enjoyed our stay

We arrived with automatic check in which was super. The site is big and well spaced out. The reception and toilet block is pretty central. We were on hard standing and didn't find the 4 minute walk to the shower block a chore at all. There is a great information point at reception and laundry and washing up opposite the shower block. At no point did we have to queue for a loo or a shower and the closing time for cleaning didn't seem to be bothering anybody at the time of our visit, but the site was not full. The showers are hot and water pressure good. We took advantage of booking the ferry through the club site and sailed from Lymington into Yarmouth which is pleasant and forty minutes. About a 35-40 minute to the camp site which is pretty central for most things. The site is well kept, lots of mature hedges and trees but not too shady, plenty of sunshine and lots of space. Pitches were a good size - parking is between two white posts and plenty of room for awning and sitting etc. Wifi isn't great - it's free but buffering any type of TV via Ipad is not particularly great. The area is supposed to have 4G but again we didn't find this that reliable. The site is close to the Red Squirrel Trail which is super for biking and walking. You can head up to Newport (and as far as Cowes) or down to Sandown and along the coast and loop back round - the whole trail is about 32 miles in total and really good for access for all, there was a bit of a muddy section outside of Newport which they should address. Loads of footpaths branch off this trail. The round the island cycling route is great - there are two types of signs, one for clockwise and the other for anticlockwise. Be prepared to slow your pace of life - the Island is very popular with cyclists who are the natural speed control and the roads are small. There are lots of lovely things to see - Tennyson Down and that area is stunning - you can walk from Freshwater to Yarmouth and all round the coast to come back to Freshwater. Lots of lovely beaches and coast paths, plenty for the kids to do but be prepared to pay - donkey sanctuary is free. Car parking is fairly expensive - take cash if you can, there has been some card cloning incidents. Only Waitrose is at East Cowes but plenty of other supermarkets. We ate at the Dairyman's Daughter which also has artisan crafts there - book your table otherwise you won't get in, pub grub and it was good value for money. Newport is sort of the capital and where you will find the main shops and a nice atmospheric High Street. There are tired places on the Island as with everywhere but there are also lots of lovely places too - Seaview is very quaint and Yarmouth very nice. Carisbrook Castle and Osbourne House (English Heritage) are good. Quarr Abbey free - donation if you wish. We had a super time on our bikes and walking. Would recommend this site as a good base for visiting the Island and thank you to the wardens who are lovely.

Not up to standard

This site just wasn’t up to scratch, especially when compared to other club sites. On a positive, the site is very well maintained aesthetically. Unfortunately there were a number of issues during our stay that make this a site we won’t be visiting again. We have visited a number of club sites, and have not experienced any of the issuesThose issues were: 1. The toilet blocks close for cleaning at 10.30am (for men). I can’t think of a worse time. This is a campsite. Some of us have campervans to reorganise each morning. You are constantly clock-watching. Even if you use the wash facilities in time, the toilets are closed other than a unisex toilet that is in constant use anyway due to the main blocks closed off. On one of the days, the attendant came in to the toilet block, and shouted that there was 10 minutes to go before it closed. I left in good time, but a barrier had already been placed on the door. This was just unacceptable. It felt like the cleaning time was at the convenience of the site rather than those staying. 2. Lack of visible staff. The automated check-in when we first arrived seemed like a great idea at first - until we found it difficult to find a member of staff in the shop/reception. We visited a number of times during the daytime too. 3. The ‘saving energy’ signs. There were signs displayed stating that the site bollard lights would be turned off in the evenings, and that people should use the light on their phones instead. This was part of a green initiative. I’m up for saving energy, but where was the information stating that the cost savings would be passed onto the customer? Afterall, we were still paying the same? Just as a comparison, we just got back from the lovely Burford site in Oxfordshire. When we checked in, we were greeted by a member staff. There was always a staff member available right up until 5pm. The toilet/washing blocked closed at 2.00pm - when everyone had used them, and we’re out and about. No signs about turning off any evening bollard lights - and they even had visiting catering vans. In comparison, the Southland site felt like it was simply doing the bare minimum to actually save money, at the inconvenience of the people who stay there.

Lovely site

Quiet site with well spaced pitches, some separated by hedges. I liked the fact that some areas of grass had been left uncut to benefit wildlife and to mark a boundary between pitches. Facilities up to the usuual club standard and very clean. A cycling/walking trail is easily accessable from the site with a nice cafe.

An excellent large site

A fairly large site as I'm used to CLs. Please note if you do not have a toilet on board then you should stay at the grass pitches as the hard standing is quite far from the toilet and shower block. However the facilities are very clean and tidy. The automatic booking in system is very quick and easy as it recognizes your number plate on arrival with clear directions where to go. There is a lovely dog walking area at the south of the site with stunning views especially at sunset
