Southland Club Campsite

We arrived with automatic check in which was super. The site is big and well spaced out. The reception and toilet block is pretty central. We were on hard standing and didn't find the 4 minute walk to the shower block a chore at all. There is a great information point at reception and laundry and washing up opposite the shower block. At no point did we have to queue for a loo or a shower and the closing time for cleaning didn't seem to be bothering anybody at the time of our visit, but the site was not full. The showers are hot and water pressure good. We took advantage of booking the ferry through the club site and sailed from Lymington into Yarmouth which is pleasant and forty minutes. About a 35-40 minute to the camp site which is pretty central for most things. The site is well kept, lots of mature hedges and trees but not too shady, plenty of sunshine and lots of space. Pitches were a good size - parking is between two white posts and plenty of room for awning and sitting etc. Wifi isn't great - it's free but buffering any type of TV via Ipad is not particularly great. The area is supposed to have 4G but again we didn't find this that reliable. The site is close to the Red Squirrel Trail which is super for biking and walking. You can head up to Newport (and as far as Cowes) or down to Sandown and along the coast and loop back round - the whole trail is about 32 miles in total and really good for access for all, there was a bit of a muddy section outside of Newport which they should address. Loads of footpaths branch off this trail. The round the island cycling route is great - there are two types of signs, one for clockwise and the other for anticlockwise. Be prepared to slow your pace of life - the Island is very popular with cyclists who are the natural speed control and the roads are small. There are lots of lovely things to see - Tennyson Down and that area is stunning - you can walk from Freshwater to Yarmouth and all round the coast to come back to Freshwater. Lots of lovely beaches and coast paths, plenty for the kids to do but be prepared to pay - donkey sanctuary is free. Car parking is fairly expensive - take cash if you can, there has been some card cloning incidents. Only Waitrose is at East Cowes but plenty of other supermarkets. We ate at the Dairyman's Daughter which also has artisan crafts there - book your table otherwise you won't get in, pub grub and it was good value for money. Newport is sort of the capital and where you will find the main shops and a nice atmospheric High Street. There are tired places on the Island as with everywhere but there are also lots of lovely places too - Seaview is very quaint and Yarmouth very nice. Carisbrook Castle and Osbourne House (English Heritage) are good. Quarr Abbey free - donation if you wish. We had a super time on our bikes and walking. Would recommend this site as a good base for visiting the Island and thank you to the wardens who are lovely.
Not up to standard
This site just wasn’t up to scratch, especially when compared to other club sites.
On a positive, the site is very well maintained aesthetically. Unfortunately there were a number of issues during our stay that make this a site we won’t be visiting again. We have visited a number of club sites, and have not experienced any of the issuesThose issues were:
1. The toilet blocks close for cleaning at 10.30am (for men). I can’t think of a worse time. This is a campsite. Some of us have campervans to reorganise each morning. You are constantly clock-watching. Even if you use the wash facilities in time, the toilets are closed other than a unisex toilet that is in constant use anyway due to the main blocks closed off. On one of the days, the attendant came in to the toilet block, and shouted that there was 10 minutes to go before it closed. I left in good time, but a barrier had already been placed on the door. This was just unacceptable. It felt like the cleaning time was at the convenience of the site rather than those staying.
2. Lack of visible staff. The automated check-in when we first arrived seemed like a great idea at first - until we found it difficult to find a member of staff in the shop/reception. We visited a number of times during the daytime too.
3. The ‘saving energy’ signs. There were signs displayed stating that the site bollard lights would be turned off in the evenings, and that people should use the light on their phones instead. This was part of a green initiative. I’m up for saving energy, but where was the information stating that the cost savings would be passed onto the customer? Afterall, we were still paying the same?
Just as a comparison, we just got back from the lovely Burford site in Oxfordshire. When we checked in, we were greeted by a member staff. There was always a staff member available right up until 5pm. The toilet/washing blocked closed at 2.00pm - when everyone had used them, and we’re out and about. No signs about turning off any evening bollard lights - and they even had visiting catering vans.
In comparison, the Southland site felt like it was simply doing the bare minimum to actually save money, at the inconvenience of the people who stay there.

Lovely site
Quiet site with well spaced pitches, some separated by hedges. I liked the fact that some areas of grass had been left uncut to benefit wildlife and to mark a boundary between pitches. Facilities up to the usuual club standard and very clean. A cycling/walking trail is easily accessable from the site with a nice cafe.
An excellent large site
A fairly large site as I'm used to CLs. Please note if you do not have a toilet on board then you should stay at the grass pitches as the hard standing is quite far from the toilet and shower block. However the facilities are very clean and tidy. The automatic booking in system is very quick and easy as it recognizes your number plate on arrival with clear directions where to go. There is a lovely dog walking area at the south of the site with stunning views especially at sunset

Couldn't fault it!
We had a wonderful week here, made perfect by the superb weather we were lucky enough to get. The site was ideally located near Sandown, lots of local interest nearby and with a local Morrison's just a couple of miles away to stock up. Don't miss the Donkey Sanctuary and Osborne House! The standard on the site was top quality as we have come to expect from the club and what we particularly liked was the lay out with high edges that created little private areas that were absolute sun traps. We toured the whole island and absolutely loved our base. Definitely contact the Club via phone about the ferry prices too as we saved a fortune on the costs posted online - so don't let that put you off.
What a site
Having just returned from a three night stay I can only reiterate what has already been written about this site.
So peaceful possibly because it was outside school holiday time, and there were very few campers on the grass pitches. However, there is plenty of space for each pitch so I’m sure busy times are well catered for.
I love the new two post pitch marks. So easy to line up with them and much appreciated. I also like the initiative of turning off the bollard lights on the electric hook up. Being able to see so many stars was amazing.
The site is beautifully kept and grass pitch areas protected by neatly trimmed hedges. I agree with a previous reviewer that the hard standings are a bit stark but they do look newly appointed so perhaps it just needs some trees to grow.
The site is 5-10 minutes from a bus route that runs from Newport to Ryde via Sandown and Bembridge so access to other parts of the island can be car free. Just make sure you know your times as this route has only 1 bus per hour in each direction. There is a good cycle route on the other side of Newchurch (beyond the church) which I used to walk into Godshill and Sandown. Godshill was about 5 miles, Sandown about 2 miles.
My only gripe was that the small shop had no milk, on my arrival on Tuesday, and none expected until Thursday and the nearest shop was a drive away. Would suggest campers arrive with the basic.
A lovely lovely site. Well done team
Exemplary
A super site in a sylvan setting and very efficiently run.
Friendly, helpful staff team and excellent shower and loo facilities. (Spotlessly clean and plentiful hot water).
This was our first leisure trip in our 'van and it worked a treat for us.
We shall definitely be returning. Thank you, team.
Lovely site in a great location
We had a week here on the hard standing area and enjoyed some fantastic days out. It was in a great location to access the whole island. The pub in the local village, The Pointer, is well worth a visit and is VERY dog friendly so suited us to a tee. The site is divided into two main areas. Next time, if dry, we would probably choose a grass pitch as this area felt better than the rows of gravel pitches. The facilities were clean. If the site was full I am not sure how they would cope with the size of the site but this wasn’t an issue when we were there. The wardens were welcoming and friendly. The one advice I would have is don’t choose pitch 144. It has lots of passing walkers and seemed to be an area where people came to let their dogs do their business. Plus people walked over the corner of our pitch all the time. Wardens weren’t interested when I reported it and suggested a hedge be grown there to prevent this.
All in all a great site if you choose the right pitch!

Good site in a good location
Stayed for a week at the beginning of September, so most of the kids had left by then. That may have contributed to the peace and quiet we experienced!
Site is divided into two, hard standing on one side and grass pitches (a much greater number) on the other. The hard area did have a bit of a carpark look about it, all very open, the grass area has plenty of hedges and trees, lots of little areas, some individual pitches, some with just a few and some more open areas, but all seemed to be well laid out.
The facility block, just the one, was kept spotlessly clean. Though I did wonder how busy they might get when the site is full, no issues when we were there.
Loads to do and see on the island, for all tastes.
The pub just up the (unpaved fairly narrow) road, The Pointer, is well worth a visit, recommend the pies! Worth booking though, as it is popular. Also, other direction, Fighting Cocks, also worth a visit. Much bigger pub and still very popular, and decent food.
Overall a good site and would definitely recommend!
Superb Site
Stayed here for 11 nights at the end of August. The site was always absolutely immaculate. Never once did I see a speck of dirt in any of the facilities and the grounds were well maintained.
My son, dogs, cat and I had a magnificent holiday. This site is well situated to visit the entire island and there is a lot to see and do without too much of a drive in any direction.
Even during busy school holiday time the site was peaceful at night so that you could hear the crickets.
The play park is away from the pitches so that noise from the kids was kept to a minimum and they could be allowed to be themselves without disturbing others.
The main dog walk is a good size too.
Honestly, I couldn’t fault this site and would recommend it to anyone wishing to visit the Isle of Wight.
