Not Happy

We are regular visitors to this site for its peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, but not on this occasion. After 15 days of cancer treatment for my wife, we decided to take 8 days relaxing at this lovely location, After setting everything up "cover for loungers" in case of rain, a bird stand so we could sit and watch the wildlife, electric plugged in and kettle on, The second day we had returned from the local shops to find all the power leads to all the vans down our row disconnected, and was told by the next door van that it had been off for about 30mins, I was then told to remove the small tent covering the loungers which was tight up to the back of the van but I must admit it was slightly over the grass by about 1 mtre which I didn't think would be a problem since it didn't have a groundsheet , and also the bird stand which was on the grass, how pathetic, I was then asked to move the stays and storm straps whilst the grass had be cut, I felt as though I was "at work" not on holiday all this hassle just to cut the surrounding grass, after it was done the lady next door lost her freezer food because the power cable had not been connected back properly, talking to other visitors no one was very happy with the way things were. and our 8 days was completely ruined, we will be back here again because we love it but not while " Captain Chaos " is in charge P S I would have thought it a dangerous practice to switch off the mains from a van whilst the occupants are out, Normally the Wardens just move the cables aside whilst cutting the grass

Comment from the Club

Many thanks for taking the time to leave a review and we are very pleased you find the site peaceful and relaxing. We also hope your wife is recovering well and that you come back to stay on the site again soon. The Site Staff have been in touch as they want to address the concerns you have raised and clear up any misunderstandings. Whilst grass cutting large areas, the site staff unplug cables for safety reasons, however they always ask members first. On your return the wardens asked if you could move the utility tent and awning guide pegs to enable them to cut the grass behind the pitch and they did offer to do this for you to save you the trouble. All cables were plugged back in after 30 minutes. We are very sorry to read this impeded on your enjoyment of the site. Unfortunately next door’s electric tripped during the evening. The site staff asked if all contents of their fridge were ok and she informed them they were so again we are very sorry to read if this wasn’t the case. We are sorry that this stay was not relaxing for you but hope that your next trip here will be more enjoyable and please do not hesitate to speak to the site staff during your stay if you have any concerns as they will always do their utmost to assist.

Nice site except for idiot drivers

We spent 10 nights here and found the site to be very pleasant and well laid out. Some pitches are overshadowed by trees. The site doesn't have a toilet block which is fine by us, but it does puzzle me why in that case it can average 5 stars for facilities, but then many club reviews doe seem to rate everything as 5 stars; The dog walk onsite is through a small wood, but unfortunately it isn't fenced off from the site and if like you have a young dog who is easily distracted it was far too easy for her to run onto the site so I had to keep her on her lead. We were pitched near the entrance gate, which has a cattle grid and some of the idiots staying on the site were driving to and out of the site, past several caravans at ridiculous speeds banging over the cattle grid. The speed limit is 5mph and to be honest anything up to 10 mph isn't too bad, but many of these idiots were easily doing 20mph coming into the site and clattering over the cattle grid and speeding past until the first bend outside the site office. This is a problem which ids becoming worse on club sites, and it's notable that many of these speeders are NOT young drivers by any means, on the contrary many of them were well beyond middle aged and some of them were actually towing caravans while speeding! . Complaining about speeders to the wardens achieves nothing as they invariably say it's difficult to say if someone is speeding. This is nonsense, 5mph is a fast walking pace, I don;t know anyone who can walk at 20mph. I have complained repeatedly to the club about this problem but it seems that until there is a serious incident they will do nothing. However if you pitch a foot away from the peg it becomes a federal case! It's about time electronic speed signs on sites that can easily be seen by everybody so that speeders can be reported and the wardens actually do something about it. I'm more concerned about the dangers of speeding that of someone "exercising" their dog. I will say "well done" to a warden when I see them pulling up and warning one of these people. If anyone reading this review is prone to speeding around campsites, and you will certainly know if you are, then SLOW DOWN before you kill a child. There is no excuse whatsoever for speeding on sites

Shame about the mining

Great wardens, very well kept and extremely welcoming. This is a great site and very quiet as those without toilet blocks often are which is why we love staying with them. We have visited many times before and have always given it 5 stars, however this time I have dropped one off. The reason for this is not the club's fault but the drilling that is taking place at the Potash mine which is at the entrance road to the site. I am sure if the wind was in another direction we would not have heard it, and I believe once the drilling is finished it will be all quiet again as the potash will be sent through a 35 mile tunnel to arrive directly beside the ships in the port. (A fascinating project in fact that I fully support). It would certainly not stop me returning, but it would be unfair to give it 5 stars at present.

Quiet and peaceful

A very quiet and peaceful site set in a wooded area with several camping areas separated by trees. Somewhat isolated being 6 miles from Whitby and with no pubs or shops within walking distance which is just what I was looking for. Very helpful staff running a clean, tidy well maintained site.

Short but Perfect stay

Being the October whitby Goth weekend, we only managed to get booked on the site for 1 night. But we will revisit as it was a well kept, dog friendly site, ideally situated for our stay. The facilities for fresh water top up and grey water emptying are easily accessed in a motorhome, no heavy metal covers to lift for grey water. The site wardens are very welcoming, friendly and helpful. A very peaceful, very well run site, definitely worth a visit.

Staying under a dark sky

We started visiting this site three years ago. We are steampunks and our son is a goth. We find the site very well located for the twice a year Whitby goth festival. I love the site as it is under a dark sky and this visit I took my telescope and camera and took some wonderful pictures of the starry night sky. The best way to get to the site is from the south from Scarborough there are some steep gradients to the west and north of Whitby. The site is extremely well maintained and the site wardens were very friendly and helpful. Yes there are limited facilities no shower blocks on this site due to it's location but knowing that up front you should be prepared. The site does not have very good EE phone coverage but does have the club's internet. My only criticism not of the site but of the area is there is a limited number of family pubs and none within a 15 minute walk. When approaching the site across the cattle grid be careful of the sheep roaming free. They tend to hide behind the bushes and cross the roads just in front of you. It's become a bit of a joke in the family we always get a guard of honour when we arrive. The wardens sign post the weather details and it's advice well worth listening too. The site is located on top of the moor with a valley running down one side. It can be extremely windy on the site. Yes the site is ringed by trees but at the start and end of the season there is not much in the way of a wind break. All in all a very good clean site, friendly and helpful staff a lovely remote site for a peaceful and calm break
