Could of been better!!

Just returned from 2 weeks on the site and would like to leave an honest review of how we found it. The positive points first: Site is easy to find provided you follow their directions otherwise sat navs want to take you down typical Devon single track lanes. Largish site split into 2 areas. The site sits very high hence why it is surrounded by windmills, but this also means that you can get very high winds. On nice days the views are very special and far reaching. When the weather closes in you have very limited visibility but go into Woolacombe and it is completely different weather. Good size pitches a lot of which are on the level. Big dog field where they can run off lead. Friendly wardens. Brilliant location within reach of Ilfracombe, Woolacombe, Croyde and many other lovely places. Within 30 mins there is a lot to see. Good size Tesco within easy 10 min drive and local community shop for quick essentials although beware they close at 4.30. Good size recreation field if you have children. Now for the negative points: Upon arrival it was raining, not a good start but hey ho its a typical British summer, I can't hold that against the site. What I can complain about though is the state of the grass. The site had obviously been mothballed at the beginning of lockdown and although the C&MC were eager to get you to book they were obviously not so eager to get their pitches into a good condition prior to anyone turning up. The grass had obviously been very long (3ft according to a local) and had been cut and left, there were huge clods of cut grass everywhere that stuck to your shoes and got into your awnings, caravans and cars alike. It was like pitching your awning on straw stubble. Just replenishing your services involved getting your feet wet through, I eventually went and bought a pair of short wellies. The smell of rotting grass under your awning was most unpleasant. There was no attempt to cut our pitch while we were there although new people got theirs cut! The site is also very windy at times and storm straps were essential. The dog field although large was initially awful as the grass was so long but over time traffic trod it down to almost acceptable. Some people may also be concerned that there is no security barrier so anyone can drive onto site.

Little Gem of a site

This site was simply perfect! with electric hook up good spacing between pitches, dog walk on site and paying field for the kids it has everything you need, true it hasn't got all the added fancy facilities such as a toilet and shower block but with that also hasn't got the high end prices, for a family of 5 you can cut your holiday costs down by at least a 3rd compared to some of the more commercial sites leaving extra cash for some fun days out or excursions. i truly don't understand why more people don't make more use out of these more basic of sites, with most outfits now being fitted with a toilet and shower there simply is no need for all those wasted amenities. The site was perfectly positioned to explore the area of north Devon needing to travel no more than 20 minutes to reach most locations, we were there a week and feel we have only scratched the surface, there is also a public foot path that starts approximately 50 yards up the lane which we didn't get round to exploring but from the view from the first field can only imagine what a beautiful walk it would make for those wanting to explore more on foot. The wardens are perfect and so welcoming, friendly and helpful. i don't normally do reviews and with the fear that i may loose any returning spaces at this gem of a site i whole hearty recommend a visit. It wont be long before we are back again.

Peaceful

Super welcome (probably the best in 35 years of CC sites) Site is well laid out and the dog walk is good apart from the grass being too long in many places The walk to the Crown pub in West Down Is well worth the walk (great for a socially distancing beer or a meal) although you have to come back up cardiac hill The site is nice and quiet and really peaceful Our only criticism of the site was the grass is far too long and it should have been cut properly before the site opened on July 4th - there was no excuse for this as we had plenty of notice prior to the opening (I’m sure a local farmer would have mown it for free and used it for silage)

Great site

We have been visiting this site for about 25 years and find it perfect for our caravaning needs It is a quite site with wonderful views either to the coast or inland country Wardens are really great and friendly It saddens us that there is always a rumour that the caravan club may close this site Please keep it open but spend a little money on tidying it up.Many caravaners enjoy this type of site It is in a perfect position for touring North Devon

Great dog walk

Very nice and friendly site. This is our second visit. The dog walk is exceptional and the whole site is well maintained. No toilets but that isn't a problem as there as numerous water and emptying facilities.

9 great nights

Lovely site. Friendly and helpful wardens. Great dog walking field where your dog can run off the lead. We were on pitch 64 close to dog field and water and waste facilities. All the pitches have a slight slope, but not steep. It was good to be on grass, so much easier to peg our the awning. Sadly we were not able to get WIFI at our location but no matter. We did hear some dog barking from across the valley but not enough to be an annoyance. There is a nice pub down I the village with good food. We would be happy to visit again in the future.

A Wonderful Week at Ilfracombe

If you like your sites to have lots of grey gravel pitches and a toilet /shower block, you probably wouldn't consider this site, but you will be missing out by not trying a stay on a wonderful little site. The site is open and spacious with some lovely views.it is split into two fields, the grass pitches are well spaced and as the site wasn't full we had lots of room. Some of the pitches slope, but others are level. There is a large field for dog walking and another one used as a play area for ball games, although there isn't any play equipment. The village is a 10 minute stroll away with a community shop and pub, the walk back is uphill so may take a bit longer.😉 There is lots to see and do in the area, we liked Mortehoe and the coastal village of Lee was lovely.Ilfracombe is worth a visit, if only to see Damien Hurst 's "Verity" statue. Ilfracombe has a Tesco and a Lidl for shopping, but venture into the High Street and you will find a couple of butchers and a nice bakery.Exmoor is also within easy reach for a day trip. Motor Homers may find the site a little remote as there is only one bus which goes to Barnstaple. I would like to say a big thankyou to the wardens who were very welcoming and friendly, and when I rang to see if anyone had found a set of keys, checked our pitch, found them and said they would post them back.☺ Dog owners planning to visit the area are advised to check their dog for ticks after any walks, especially along the coastal path. We loved this quiet little site, and will use it again when we visit the area.

Absolute Gem of a site

This was our first stay here and it was fantastic. The wardens were helpful and able to answer any questions. The site is in a peaceful location but on the doorstep of Ilfracombe - ideal. There is no hardstanding but please do not let that put you off. Our pitch drained wonderfully after a very very wet day. A visit to Lundy is a must. Cannot wait to return.
