Disappointing

We recently stayed at the site for 2 weeks having booked a fully serviced pitch. When we arrived only 3 such pitches were available and only one was able to accommodate our caravan which is almost 8m in length. We don't have a motor mover as my husband is competent at maneuvering, however it's only possible to manoeuvre if there is space to do so, which there isn't. Eventually with the help of our neighbours we managed to site the van by pushing it into place. Do not choose pitch 192 if you want a peaceful, relaxing holiday it has to be one of the noisiest pitches on the site. My understanding is that caravans have to be 3m apart? We saw Van's not even 2m apart! If we return I definately wouldn't pay for a serviced pitch as there are much nicer pitches elsewhere on the site. Despite my grumbles our 15yr old son loved it and wants to return next year. This site should state that service pitches are only suitable for van's with motor movers as the road is so narrow. At £52 a night it was a disappointing experience for us.

Another great stay

We have a six and two year old and we love this site. We’ve booked for next year already! Great family facilities, especially the play park and swimming pool. Good entertainment for children on a night at the club house and the amusements keep them entertained. Had a poor pitch last year but a great one this year with an amazing sea view. The only downside for me is the food in the club house. Very mediocre and some quite expensive. More gluten free options would be appreciated too! Good range of drinks and just about enough choice of gins, but more would be welcomed. Pool is a very comfortable temperature which is a bonus! We enjoyed trips to Goodrington beach (dog friendly), Torquay (has a nice indoor swimming pool), Brixham (the replica Golden Hind is a hit with our eldest), Paignton (great Geopark, rides and pier) and Dartmouth (stunning river crossing and it has an M&S for caravan meal supplies!).

Lovely Site but ...!

Having just come back from a week away, we have no real complaints. We booked a fully serviced pitch but the only one large enough to accommodate our van required use of the mover as it was impractical to reverse so it was annoying to find out that during our journey, the caravan battery had failed. As usual, a cry for help to the site staff was answered promptly and we managed to be pushed onto our pitch so many thanks for that. Where I think some work is needed and something that has been touched upon by others, is some pitches are very small to the extent that it is not possible to get the caravan + awning on and the car has to be parked elsewhere. Given that the Club strives to offer a standard sized pitch and the fact that charges for this site are at the high end of the scale, I consider that this is not acceptable. It is probably a legacy from the time that the site was a commercial site, but it has been in Club ownership now for some years so ought to have been addressed by now. People using the site need to look at their behaviour. Would they leave toilet paper on the floor at home? Do they block up their own toilet with wipes when we are constantly told by the media and water companies to bin these? Club sites are not Civic Amenity Sites so take home your carpet (yes I did spot this dumped in a bin), broken toys et al and do not expect Site Staff to have to deal with this issue. In the main, we had an enjoyable time. We found the Site Staff friendly and approachable; they have a hard time managing the mess that others leave behind.

Great site, let down.

A lovely looking site with great facilities. However, with great facilities comes a need for staff to be more vigilant. Arrival was good, few pitches to choose from but we found a nice corner. I can imagine some pitches are very difficult to access with a caravan, and some have little room to park a car once pitched - definitely a problem if you plan to have visitors. Facilities are excellent, from the nice pool to the large play ground, and well stocked shop and bar. However, with such facilities comes “issues”. Men’s toilets were invariably dirty, paper on the floor, broken or missing seats much like a city pub... not what you expect from a CC site. Then there’s the litter. Very disappointing and spoilt an otherwise well maintained site. Finally, the site is very busy. Lots of families and lots of children often teens in groups. Whilst generally pleasant I can imagine it’s not something some members will look for. However, the site is well located and we would return for the facilities. Summary: Great facilities, however, with the volume of visitors, especially when combined with the type of facilities (ie bar, entertainment), the site should consider more frequent cleaning and have on-site visible security patrols.

Club rules

Stayed on site for 8 nights, quiet clean site with lots to do and great transport links, can not fault the site. My only grumble is when arriving on site. The rules clearly state that pitches are available from 12 noon, so why do people arrive at 10am expecting to get on site and then staff allowing them on at 11! Reception staff should be aware of this rule, as people who follow the rules are at a disadvantage. We saw this practice most days when waiting for the bus, it's not fair to those who book well in advance and maybe a surcharge should be introduced for those who arrive early?

Look out on this site

We arrived at site on Monday8th July at around 2pm, only 5 pitches were left we took pitch 167 behind the main shower block. After settling in around 5 pm sat outside having gin & T we heard what we thought was a car alarm, after 1 hour it was still going off and on. When I investigated I found the noise was coming from the shower block water pump when ever someone was showering, this went on until 9.30pm next morning it started at 6.30am, same again at night. When I queried this with reception I got blank looks then one female warden said ‘oh yes the pump can be noisy’. After 2 days we moved to pitch 28. At £27 a night the club should be ashamed of themselves expecting people to put up with this, 3 of our neighbours also queried with us if we knew what the noise was. The pitches at the back of this block should be closed down or offered at half price if they cannot fix the noise. There is entertainment in the main bar on some nights, if you want a peaceful evening don’t stay around the bar area. Our first 2 days were completely spoiled by the racket from the shower block, however after moving to pitch 28 the remaining 3 days were stunning. Great dog walk, loads to do in the area, great coast walking, Coleton Fishacre, Cockington, Dartmouth and Greenways are just a few of the glorious attractions in this area. We will definitely be back to this area but not pitch 167 of it’s vicinity.

Lovely site but could be great site

Stayed for 2 weeks and had glorious weather. Site is lovely but be warned some of the pitches are just too small. We had 4 different neighbours over the 14 nights sharing what was a hedged section for 2 pitches. 2 of the neighbours were motorhomers like us so pitches were adequate, our other 2 neighbours had caravans so needed extra room and sadly 1 of the latter felt it was ok to park their car on what little pitch space we did have (Maybe the pitches need to be marked out better.) There is a huge dog walk where dogs can run loose safely, but as 1 of our dogs is a rescue dog that does not like other dogs we walked them on the recreational area that has spectacular views over the bay. Yet again inconsiderate members were not abiding by the rules on this area to keep dogs on a lead. Food in the restaurant was very good The carvery was excellent with so many vegetables to choose from but it is the only day you can get a meal served with fresh vegetables. Chip portions are very small and at £2.50 overpriced Buses run from outside the site gates and its a great way to get out and explore local areas Toilet/shower blocks spotless and up to expected standard on CAMC sites. Apart from check in had little to no interaction with wardens. All in all we did have a nice holiday but with a few changes it would have been a great holiday so yes we will visit again

Great site

We visited Hillhead for the first time two weeks ago, it was a lovely site spotlessly clean facilities and great views from a few pitches. We did not want to leave. Lots to do nearby with a good bus service if you didn't want to drive or walk. Staff were friendly on arrival but appeared extremely busy. The only negative, on arrival we were asked to drive round the site and find a pitch. This was not easy (with caravan in tow) and quite stressful as the site was very busy. It meant getting out of the car and running up and down dead ends (on foot) to see where there might be a space. That said we struck very lucky on pitch 71, (standard pitch with awning), amazing views, loads of space, quiet, short walk to toilet block, kids play area and dog walking area etc.

Never again

We went to this site for a few days. On arrival we were told to find our own pitch. We drove round several times looking for a suitable pitch. There are a lot of little cul de sacs in the middle but they're not easy to get into as most of them are one way in the direction of the perimeter road. Some of the pitches are quite short, our motorhome is 7 metres and it was a fairly tight fit. On the day we arrived we decided to eat at the restaurant as it was carvery night. I am vegetarian and my husband confirmed, on checking in, that there was a veggie option. He confirmed with the man behind the bar when he bought the tickets and was told on both occasions that there was. When I got to the carvery counter I was told that there was no veggie option and all that was on offer to me was vegetables and gravy, which wasn't vegetarian. I was very upset by this as I have had a vegetarian carvery at quite a few other places. A lady came to collect our empty plates and asked if everything had been OK for us. When we complained, she became quite aggressive and accused my husband of shouting at her. There were three televisions playing sport around the conservatory and it was impossible to speak at a normal volume. She explained that there had been vegetarian options the previous week but so many had been thrown away unsold that they decided not to do them any more. However, there was a veggie burger on the light bites menu which would have been quite acceptable had it been offered. We decided that, in view of this dispute, we did not want to remain at the site for the three nights booked and went to reception, who told us that they couldn't deal with a refund and we would have to speak to the manager, who was unavailable. My husband phoned head office and spoke to the area manager who also couldn't deal with a refund. We never got to the bottom of who could. We therefore spent the next two days unwillingly at the site but will definitely never return.

Great site again....but entertainment team changed.

We love this site, sometimes you get a good pitch with a great view and sometime not - luck of the draw as with any site. We choose the site as it is great for the children, good park, enormous playing field and unlimited swimming. Toilet blocks immaculate as always. Lots of places to visit nearby and we never tire of the location. However, as stated by a previous review the entertainment is not so good this year. Where are the usual hosts? Music far too loud (much louder than previous years) we had to sit outside just to have a conversation. The entertainment complex management seem very unprofessional, our peaceful swim was blighted by the manager and her family all using the pool shouting at each other and making a nuisance of themselves. (is there any need to be so loud and disorderly?) That aside, we will be back!
