Only stayed one night

Myself husband and our dog stayed here one night last weekend, we had booked two nights. The site is clean, our pitch was spacious and checking in was easy. The seating area outside the pub allowed dogs in, the dog walk area was very large with amazing views and a lovely meadow to walk through, the bus stop was outside, we paid for a day rider which took us to Torquay Paignton and Brixham. The reason we stayed just one night, the family next to us had children who would bounce and kick their football endlessly outside their caravan, we found it difficult to relax with a flying football being kicked over by us, perhaps a sign saying No football games here, especially as there is a huge field for children to play in, this really spoilt our stay so we decided to leave the following evening, shame as the camp is lovely with breathtaking views and very convenient for exploring the local area.

A big, busy site

Or first trip out after the Covid rules were relaxed. The site is large, over 250 pitches, and although they are spread out and on different levels you are always aware of the size of the place. It was also very busy with lots of arrivals and departures so if you have a pitch close to the main road around the site it can feel like sitting next to a main road at times with all the traffic. Some lovely sea views from a few pitches but most don't have it. The nearest (pebble) beach at Mansands is a pleasant but fairly tough 45 min hike. Walks to Brixham or Kingsweir along the coast path are lovely but quite challenging or there is always the bus service. There is nothing within easy walking distance in terms of pubs or shops. Regarding Covid, I guess one's attitude to all the restrictions will depend on one's attitude to the virus. We believe that the risks are generally so low that life should go on as normal as much as possible and consequently found the restrictions on using the toilet block frustrating rather than reassuring. The fact that the site was full meant frequent queues, despite the request for people to use their own facilities if they had them. The miles of red tape and numerous signs telling you what to do and what not to do made it feel less relaxing than it should have been. Having all of the hand washing basins in the male toilets closed off seemed rather daft when we were being told to increase hand washing! I appreciate the Club had to follow government guidelines and that for many people it was the right thing to be doing. The staff were all excellent and working very hard without being over-officious.

Fast cars but great staff

Hillhead is a family favourite and this is our fourth visit. The staff are a credit to the Club this year more than most. Especially the cleaners, who visibly work flat out on the toilet blocks and leave them spotless at the end of their shifts. However. Be prepared for people driving dangerously fast around the site. We have been here for a week and have witnessed this multiple times, daily. Cars, including those towing, going at 15-20mph on roads forcing children and others to jump to the side. The staff can't police the site, and it would appear many club members have little regard for others. These are presumably the same people who allow their dogs to foul the play areas despite having a dedicated dog area. There's a message in here somewhere. The Club staff, both wardens and cleaners, are first class and trying their best under really challenging circumstances. Maybe somme of us should also up our game too, to make the best of this beautiful site.

SUMMER HOLIDAY 2020

WE STAYED HERE FOR 11 NIGHTS WHEN THE SITE REOPENED ON 4TH OF JULY. WE THOUGHT IT WAS A GOOD SYSTEM FOR CHECKING IN ON THE FIRST DAY BY BEING GIVEN A TIME SLOT. WE WERE GIVEN 9 AM WHICH WAS NICE AND EARLY SO WE WERE ABLE TO GET SET UP AND HAD THE REST OF THE DAY TO OURSELVES. THE WARDENS HAVE WORKED HARD TO MAINTAIN THE SITE AND TO GET ALL THE MEASURES IN PLACE FOR SOCIAL DISTANCING ETC. WE THOUGHT THE BAND IDEA FOR THE TOILET BLOCK WAS GOOD, BUT ONLY WHEN WHEN MEMBERS FOLLOWED THE PROPER PROCEDURES. ONCE WHEN MY WIFE WENT TO BLOCK HER BAND WAS GONE WHEN SHE CAME OUT SO SOMEONE NEVER CHECKED THAT THEY HAD THE CORRECT BAND WITH THEIR PITCH NUMBER ON. ANOTHER INSTANCE WAS WHEN I WAS QUEUING TO GO FOR A SHOWER, A COUPLE CAME UP AND BOTH WENT IN WHICH WAS OK FOR THE LADIES BUT MEN'S WAS AT FULL CAPACITY HENCE WHY I WAS QUEUING! THE VIEWS FROM THE DOG WALK WERE LOVELY, THE DOG WALK ITSELF WAS GREAT AS IT WAS ALL ENCLOSED SO YOU COULD LET YOUR DOG OFF LEAD.SHOWER BLOCK CLEAN AS EXPECTED PLENTY OF HAND SANITISER AT VARIOUS POINTS. WE HAD SOME GOOD WALKS FROM SITE ALSO GOOD FOR CYCLISTS. PLENTY OF NICE PLACES TO VISIT IN THE SURROUNDING AREA. WOULD DEFINITELY LOVE TO GO BACK IN THE FUTURE!

One of the best

The site's description under 'Why stay here' is all true. I'd emphasise the views of rolling countryside and the ocean, which are completely rural with no towns, or even villages, in sight. Yet the site is ideally placed for a short bus ride to either Brixham, Paignton and Dartmouth (via Kingswear). The buses stop right outside the site entrance. I was travelling solo but, if you have kids, there seems to be plenty to occupy them. Otherwise, just sit back and relax, and enjoy the tranquility and privacy of your own pitch, sheltered by mature hedges.

First visit...could not fault.

We thought this place was fantastic! We were running late and had a call from the manager at 4 to see if everything was ok and to check we were still coming. On arrival, however late we were, she was very helpful, courteous and efficient. We’re usually off gridders and so found the site luxurious. Massive pitches. Plenty of room to manoeuvre. Loved the privacy hedges too. Facilities were the best we’ve ever seen! Warm, clean and underfloor heating!!?? Spoilt. The dog area is the biggest we’ve seen too! A large area for lead walking and a further very secure gated area for off lead. Plenty of poo bins. Every member of staff was friendly. Even an external trades person was friendly! Most of the people we passed said hello. A really feel good site. We went to Centry earlier in the year which is cheaper but not a patch on Hill Head. Easy to find and negotiate around the site. Can’t fault it. Shame about negative comments re new year celebrations. We weren’t there for them so can’t comment other than speaking to a couple opposite that come every year. They said it was different than previous years and went on to describe what they enjoy about it. We will undoubtedly return when we visit our family again. Well done everyone who works to create a well run site. Thank you and Happy New Year. See you then. Fiona and Niki 👍

Fantastic site with Amazing staff who work hard to ensure Christmas and New year are a wonderful holiday experience

We have just returned from Hillhead Caravan Club site where we stayed for the Christmas and New year period and are unable to understand the negative reviews. We enjoyed the site facilities and tourist attractions in the surrounding areas including the beaches and sea fronts in the day and visited the club in the evenings where met old friends and made new friends. The club complex was a pleasure to visit it provided a friendly and lively environment. During our visit the site staff and Bar/Restaurant/Entertainment staff worked very hard to ensure all members had a pleasant and enjoyable stay. The restaurant and bar were reasonably priced, the staff very pleasant and helpful, the site had a brilliant festive atmosphere not only from the decorations provided by the site staff but by the many decorated pitches around the site. At mid-night New years Eve there was a lot of people in the club room enjoying a traditional New Years Eve celebration.

Christmas and New year 2019

Stayed here for Christmas and New Year 2019. Very disappointed with the overall experience compared to 3 years ago. very little atmosphere in the clubhouse even on New years eve people were leaving at 9.30. Drinks expensive a half pint of lemonade was £2.10 and a pint around £4. Games room was closed most nights. Except for New Years eve the so called entertainment finished at 9.15. For a couple the cost was £35 per night. The same time next year it will be £45 per night. Come on Caravan Club you are taking the urine. As you probably guess we will NOT be there next year

Brilliant

We stayed for 2 nights had a brilliant time. Wardens really friendly. The site was so nice views from some of the pitches beautiful. Facilities lovely and clean and under floor heating was lovely. Did have a bar on site which was really nice. We caught the bus which the stop was outside the campsite into kingswear then got the ferry across to Dartmouth which was fantastic place. We would definitely come again when in that area.

Disappointed

We visited yet again our favourite site because of its location and amenities. This time we were quite disappointed. We knew in advance that the Christmas celebrations had been scaled back on previous years, but we didn't expect it to be such a miserable time. The cost for 5 nights was high but they even locked the games room so we couldn't have a bit of fun with the fruit machines and 2p drops. We were not the only ones who were fed up, most of those we spoke to thought the same as us. The menu has changed since our last visit, difficult to read and select and nowhere near as well presented as in the past. To call frozen scampi locally sourced is laughable, but if it was purchased at the local Iceland then I suppose accurate. Nearly £10 for a few frozen poor quality scampi, a few chips and peas is not good value at all. Captive audience with no atmosphere whatsoever. .Oh dear oh dear what have they done to our favourite site. I could go on but we are back there in June 2020 when lets hope things have picked up.
