All the things we like about a club site but with a more relaxed vibe

We love south Devon but this was our first time at Hillhead. It's beautiful site and we managed to find a pitch in an area with good views to the sea. It was a pleasant space to spend time, and the coast walks to Brixham and to Kingswear whilst moderately challenging are a real delight...and you can get the bus back from either place! We brought our kayaks - the Dart is tricky to access from Kingswear and Dartmouth, but there's good access to the sea at Paignton and to the Salcombe harbour area from North Sands beach at Salcombe.

Top of the hill!

We were at the site at the beginning of August. This is a lovely site with good views from some of the pitches. It is large with good facilities - reminded us of the European sites, with a well-stocked shop on site (small supermarket style) and a pool - unfortunately this was not available due to the current Covid-19 measures. The name of the site indicates it's position and it is a hilly walk to anywhere away from the site, so be mindful of that if you are wanting to walk- having said that, the bus stops just outside the site entrance in both directions. We went to Brixham and then stayed on the return bus to go right through to Kingswear - not expensive to travel and both places were nice to visit - nothing much at Kingswear as a place, but this is where you can get the foot-ferry (£1.50 per person and a lovely short ride) across to Dartmouth - which was lovely to visit. Brixham is a little tired but reminded me of Padstow with the boats in the harbour and the eating places around. We ate at a fish restaurant right on the front and it was lovely (and I am very particular about eating in good places with fresh food). I was able to have 'moules frites!' how's that for a staycation! You can also walk to beautiful and remote Mansands beach from the site. But unless you are a keen walker, I would not recommend the route we took. If you have a car, see if you can get closer. If walking, turn right out of the site until you find the bridlepath on the right -follow this route as it goes down a steep hill - when you get to the bottom there are two routes to take - I would not recommend the middle path to anyone - it initially looks the best one as it is flat, but it was very muddy for a long stretch and you still had a steep hill to go up before going down again. Take the road ahead that leads directly up a hill - it then goes steeply down but this was the best route. Take food and water and a good seat - also footwear for in the sea as it is all rocky! It took 45 minutes to walk it but the weather was beautiful and we didn't rush. All in all a good 4 nights.

2nd visit and felt very safe

This was our second visit to Hillhead and we will certainly be coming back. It’s well situated between Brixham and Dartmouth and while we used public transport last time we brought the car this time to visit a few more places. We enjoyed Greenway and Coleton Fishacre gardens and walks along the coastal path. For those with dogs there are several car parks set back from the Coast path which make access for walks very easy. It’s a nice walk from Brixham up to Berry Head and also from Berry Head further along St Mary’s Bay. Looking forward to visiting next year. Felt very clean and safe to stay.

As usual all good. Site staff efficient and had good control over the running of site under covid so much so that you wouldn't know any different.

good site good location. Site staff very pleasant. Thanks for making our stay so nice.

Beautiful Sea Views

We stayed here for 3 nights late July and what a little gem. Situated on a hill top, the sea views are stunning. As it is high up, it can get a bit breezy from the sea breeze, however the site is well laid out with lots of landscaping and hedges between pitches giving both shelter and privacy. As we are in a motorhome, we need to either be able to walk or get public transport. The bus into Brixham goes every hour from outside the site to either Brixham or Dartmouth and dogs are allowed on board. You can walk down to local beaches but be warned that it’s a very steep walk for about 2 miles. There are no pubs within walking distance but the bar on site is very good and was also offering takeaway food while we there and I believe is now a sit in restaurant as well. The fish and chips were lovely I would highly recommend this site. Probably better if you are towing as you need the car to make the most of the surrounding area.

Lovely site, amazing views

This is a lovely site, i particularly like the end pitches that take a group of 3 or 4 and are enclosed by hedges. Very popular and busy, which means it can get noisy. The views from the dog field area are really beautiful. Good facilities. A little bit more expensive than some of the others but I guess this is reflected by the facilities they offer. Good for families.

Great Time at Hillhead

We stayed at Hillhead for 6 nights at the end of July and had a great time, there is so much to do in the area. The welcome from the lovely warden with purple in her hair was great - jolly, confident and welcoming. Our pitch had a glimpse of the sea and was in an absolutely brilliant position in a cul-de-sac so nice and quiet. I agree with an earlier review, members' cars were moving far to fast on site - it is tight anyway so why would you risk hurting someone?! Slow down, you are on holiday! The wardens kept our facilities block very clean indeed. The wrist-band system worked to a degree with most people trying their best. However, as the bands are to the side, it is easy to walk out and forget to take your band so, unless you check, you can be queuing outside an empty or at least under-filled toilet block. Several times I came back out and removed wrist-bands from the hooks (placing them on a window ledge nearby) as there was space for more people inside. The band system was obviously a good quick fix to get things started and it is difficult to solve without expense, but perhaps East Grinstead could put some more thought into a better system for next season when, no doubt, we will have to continue social distancing. We used the takeaway and bar once and the food and service was great. Again, very welcoming and very clean giving confidence to guests. One issue - no fault of the site - a previous dog-owning occupant of our pitch had let it urinate all over the pitch leaving many, many round yellow patches. There is a lovely dog walk a few steps away what a shame they didn't use it.

Lovely Holiday

Lovely campsite in an excellent location. lovely dog walking field with a lovely view. Bus stop outside entrance to local villages. Pitches well maintained and some have lovely views but it is on a first come basis as you cant choose your pitch in advance. we had one backing onto the play area and this did tend to be noisy but we have two teenagers so couldn't moan.. It did quieten down after 10 though so all fine. WiFi is shocking and did not work at all so do not pay it is not worth it. Band system for toilets and showers worked although some thought it was ok to ignore this. That is not the staffs fault though and everything was as clean and well maintained as possible. This was our second visit and have already booked a third in September and another holiday for next year. Highly recommend. Just watch out for the rabbit holes! on a big plus the staff are quite possibly the friendliest and most helpful I have met

Amazing 10 day holiday in August

We arrived on 3rd August 2020 after having booked way before the Coronavirus outbreak. Entry was very welcoming (there is a very steep hill on the A380 to Torquay which took me by surprise), and on entry to the site the first thing I noticed was how tight some of the pitches were to manoeuvre. It was extremely busy, and there was a stunning view of the sea. We quickly realised that only a lucky few got these pitches which I thought was unfair as we all paid the same amount for the pitch. We eventually found a pitch which would have had a lovely view if it wasn’t for the uncut hedge blocking the view. I think this could have easily have been rectified or done prior to the site opening. There was a band system in place for the toilet block which worked well during our stay. There was only one instance when my wife’s band was taken by somebody when she left the block. The site has amazing views, and what would have been a great playground if it wasn’t for a group of swearing teenagers who but my two young boys off playing on it. A rule about supervision in the current situation I think would have been appropriate. The site is really well positioned for Kingswear where you can get the boat to Dartmouth. Brixham is also very close which is beautiful. There is a steam team from Paignton to Kingswear too which I would recommend. Beaches are in close reach, some are pebbly, and some sandy. Goodrington Sands was lovely, aswell as Torquay beaches. I don’t agree cars were fast, it’s an extremely safe site. Noise was an issue some nights either from screaming teenagers or from neighbouring pitches. After 10 it did seem to quieten down. WiFi was shocking. We pay for the year, but rarely got a signal. It is not worth paying by the day. The views and lack of them due to overgrown bushes was my main gripe. Some caravans clearly gloated in the views they enjoyed and I didn’t think this was fair. The bar area was ok, and the food was nice. The pool was closed so we didn’t experience all facilities open. We have booked again next year which is a testament to the site. I fully recommend it.
