Well organised busy site

Great location if you have a car or use the bus. Bus £5 for a day rover ticket …..if a group of friends or family buy a £10 group day rover which covers 5 people. Busy site and some pitches are tight to access. Only ate in the restaurant once but friendly staff and a superb locally caught sea bass meal for £12.95 was a steal! Paignton is best avoided but Brixham ( do have a dinner at “Just Fish”..locally caught Haddock recommended ) and Dartmouth are stunning.

So very welcomed on this immaculate site

Our 13-night stay at Hillhead was exceptional. The site itself is superbly maintained and the Club staff was obliging, friendly, and supportive in every respect. Despite Covid restrictions, the restaurant was open with an extensive menu and a specials board that changes every two days. The quality of the food was amazing and the service was exemplary. All due credit must be given to the restaurant staff; Paris, Laura, Chloe, Marcello, and of course the Chef. Our thanks to you all for a rewarding and entertaining experience that complimented the food all of which was delicious and of good value. Buses to Brixham, Dartmouth (via the passenger ferry at Kingswear), and Paignton are hourly and stop literally just outside the Site entrance. We were unable to avail ourselves of the shower facilities due to Covid restrictions but they looked great as were the swimming pool and children's playground. Thank you Hillhead; we shall return!

If you put a negative review it gets Deleted User!

I'm not sure why, but I put a negative review earlier and it has been Deleted User. Is this why this site has 5 stars? They obviously don't want me telling people that they haven't done anything about our van which got badly damaged by another guest and they did nothing to find the person who did it. We now have a damaged van that we are having to get repaired at our cost. Seriously losing confidence in this site.

Caravan club site at its best

We only stayed one night before 2nd lockdown but the site was in excellent condition. The wardens were extremely helpful to make the most of our stay.we look forward to returning when things reopen.

Stay at Hillhead

Just spent 2 weeks at Hillhead. The site is in a convenient position for visiting several places and attractions, including Coleton Fishacre, Greenway, Berry Head, SW coast path, Brixham and especially Dartmouth. We have mixed views of the site itself. It was extremely busy although this is not surprising given that so many people are not currently going abroad. We had a serviced pitch and felt quite hemmed in - the pitches are quite small and had no views. The bar/restaurant charged gastro pub prices, but the quality was not consistent. We were surprised at the number of outfits arriving early. We were careful not to arrive before 1pm, as stated on the CAMC website. However, we saw several arriving as early as 12pm and even 11.30am, during our stay. From the top of the site, in the play field, the views are stunning across Torbay. We spent a few hours, one day, reading and having a picnic lunch. It is very popular with people who have a bus pass and the buses stop right outside the site. We are not yet entitled to bus passes, but felt we would not be comfortable on the bus, anyway, as they tended to be very busy and a number people were not wearing face coverings.

Brixham and dartmouth not to be missed

we stayed here as part of our current tour. The site gave great access to the local attractions and the buses were easy to access and regular. The site facilities were excellent and spotlessly clean. Our first impression was that the pitch was poor due to it being located at the end of a cul de sac next to the recycling and water-point. This turned out not to be the case as the pitch had full sun long into the evening and the water-point/recycling area was not used that much. The staff were always on hand and friendly. We enjoyed days out in Brixham and Dartmouth - Paignton, not so much.

Super staff....VERY busy site

Firstly....the staff are super. Highly professional and they have a great deal to cope with at this time of restrictions and in a site of around 250 pitches .... Most campers abided by the rules but some sadly didn't. I would echo the review regarding the need to train some people to use a loo brush... and the need for some to slow down when driving on site. Access is very good for a Devon site but being outside of any major town could be problematic to those without transport....we did see campers standing waiting for already full buses! Walking the route to the Mansands Beach is VERY tricky unless fully fit and excellent walking footwear.... That said there are NT car parks nearer the beach and fabulous coastal path. Colton Fishacre and Greenway are local NT properties that deserve a visit. Brixham was overcrowded but Dartmouth was a much better place to enjoy. Paignton was awful but Torquay much nicer especially in the evening when day visitors had left. Parking charges in towns we thought were excessive but these places need revenue.

A lovely surprise

After having to cancel our long awaited holiday in the South of France we were disappointed that we could not go. We booked this site in Devon but had no idea what to expect. On arriving we were met by very friendly and welcoming wardens. They stayed upbeat and friendly throughout our visit and worked hard to keep the site immaculate. Nothing was too much trouble. For the first week of our stay we were accompanied by our little 4 year old grandson and stayed on a service pitch at the bottom of the site just before you turn up towards the shop/club etc. We did raise concerns with the wardens regarding the speed of traffic at this point and the need for speed bump and signage. They said that we are not the first member to raise concerns about this. On a positive note we were booked on a non service pitch for the remainder of our stay and had a wonderful stay here.the COVID measures in place were excellent and we'll thought out and made us feel safe at all times. The womens facilities were clean at all times as you would expect, however the men's facilites were often left in a disgusting state by members! Can I suggest that members respect the facilities and adopt a flush brush flush check before leaving a loo. It also is not fair on wardens having to clean facilities when left in this state. Beautiful views from many pitched, stunning area with loads to do. Excellent shop and bar again with friendly helpful staff. Excellent playground and fog walk. A real gem and a lovely surprise. We will be revisiting again.

Lovely site. Some issues.

Overall, we have been disappointed with this site. Hillhead is in a beautiful area with gorgeous scenery. Used as base, then you have easy access to the coast, with a number of car parks if you aren't too energetic. We recommend visits to Kingswear, the Daymark Tower, that can be seen from the site, and if you get one of the regular ferries across the Dart, a trip to Dartmouth, Slapton Sands and especially Start Point. It will cost you £3.50 to park, but on a wild day its utterly jaw dropping and atmospheric. The site itself is large, but also very compact, and some of the pitches at the bottom are ridiculously small. So small, that A frames are almost jutting into the road, and separate car parking is required away from the pitch. This is evidenced by fact that as people on better pitches left the site at the end of their stay, those in the cheap seats dived into reserve them with equipment, before moving their caravans or motorhomes. Other pitches are in small dead end roads, which are difficult to manouvre in and out of. We were lucky, and had a spacious grass pitch at the top and are very happy with it, but would estimate that about 20% of the pitches are poor, and would feel short changed had we ended up on one of these. The wardens work hard, but I get the feeling that they are under staffed. The waste bins and recycling bins were frequently over flowing. On a particular windy day, the recycling bins near us were so full the top blew open, scattering rubbish around the area. When emptied, the over flow wasn't picked up, so we did this ourselves. As I type, the rubbish has just been emptied, but not the recycling, which is again over flowing. The wristband system here isn't working as well as on other sites. The documents given to you on arrival state clearly that you will given a wristband which will have your pitch number on, but the ones given to us were blank. The first time I used mine, it was clear that this was an issue, as a man came out of the shower block, said he couldn't remember which was his, took the nearest band and said 'that one will do'. All the other bands were blank also The next morning, I reported this to reception where one female warden told me that they didn't have space to store the bands and besides, writing numbers on them was too time consuming! She gave me 2 bands with obscure numbers on them, so that we could differentiate them from others. We took these back, and scrubbed off the numbers with biro, and wrote our own on. Must have taken all of 10 seconds! The female warden concerned also booked us in when we arrived. In 5 years with the club she is the most abrupt I have encountered, and completely unaproachable. As on many other sites, speeding vehicles are an issue. With so many pitches surrounded by hedges and close to the road, the chances of a child darting out in front of a vehicle is a high, especially by the tents.
