Hillhead, Devon

Just spent 3 nights at Hillhead, Devon. Have stayed here a few times but never during School holidays, what a mistake that was. The site has tremendous views, is very clean and tidy thanks to the extremely hard working pleasant staff. It's a crying shame that the trip was spoiled by feral youths (11 to 15) running amok all over the site chasing equally young scantily clad girls, especially in the bar area, where they spent no money but just fooled around with the entertainment and disco. I cannot understand how parents allow their offspring to behave like this, nor can I understand why this behavior is permitted in a licensed bar. If the club wants to attract this type of clientele create a purpose built youth club for them and keep children out of the bar. It is also noted that charging £41.39/night for two adults is very expensive when compared to other clubs/private campsites, regardless of the school holidays which are often used as a lame excuse to ramp up prices. I am fully aware that this is not an adults only site however on every previous occasion I have stayed here there were no problems like this.  Will definitely give this site a miss during school holidays in the future.

Nice site if you get a good pitch.

Some lovely pitches but we were not lucky as the pitch we had was small and dark. The tiny bit of grass at the side was not mowed or the hedges cut so not a nice place to sit outside. The fully serviced facilities on the pitch were good and tv signal was good. We arrive at the specified time of1.00pm but noticed that people were being let in at 11.30am onwards on other days and obviously that is the reason why there were so few nice pitches left. Wardens were really nice and very helpful, food in restaurant was lovely and nothing was too much trouble for the staff.

A midweek break

We had booked this site having stayed here a few years ago with our previous Motorhome. On arrival the reception staff were very welcoming and polite. The site was very busy and full to near capacity , however we found a very nice terraced pitch surrounded by hedgerows and not too far from a Service point. Although all facilities were open on site we elected to stay fairly self isolated. People were obviously fairly comfortable with the ever changing Covid restrictions but our personal preference was to keep ourselves to ourselves. We visited the shop on a few occasions for basic provisions and the shop appeared to be fairly well stocked although some priced goods, not all, were rather extortionate. People seemed to be enjoying the outdoor swimming pool which was well managed. We didn't use the restaurant or bar, through personal choice, nothing else. Toilet and washing facilities were very clean and the staff were working extremely hard to maintain them so. We didn't visit surrounding areas on this occasion because of our nervousness to mingle amongst large groups of people, but from previous visits to the area we know that there is alot to do in the vicinity. Overall we had a very nice break in good surroundings. Thanks to all the staff for their efforts.

Lovely Site, But

Just back from Hillhead had a lovely time and good weather. Site was very busy with kids now on School Holidays. We managed to get a Pitch with no awning (Blue Peg) but found these squeezed in on small plots and uneven ground, they would be put to better use for site facilities or flower beds. As mentioned School Holiday time so the usual issues with kids running across pitches, using the feeder routes as race tracks with bikes/E scooters/Skate boards, with no parent control. Love the site but its starting to get too cramped

Great Site:

We had great weather for our stay, the site is well positioned and benefits from having a bus stop outside the gates ...ideal for motorhome members. The staff were very friendly and helpful when needed. Pitches are mainly level and well designed for the views, privacy and shelter. All in all we had a great week. No negatives other than one camper was upset about the noise from a very large motorhome that arrived with an aircon system that was very noisy ...all day! The people refused to turn the aircon off because it "was on ...not for them but for the dog" which was left in the van while they were out! I think the "noisy" member should have been more considerate of others. He was asked but no formal complaint was made to the admin.

Great stay

Had another great week due to the location we visit this site quite often. Great weather. We found the wardens this year less than friendly.

Great stay again, but some issues need attending to.

Just had another great stay at Hillhead, made admittedly by the great weather. We had a great grass no awning pitch, which overlooked the Bay, which was wonderful, though on a slope, but worth it for the views. We had visited Hillhead many times, so we knew of our first, second choice pitches etc., if they were available. So when driving around, we looked out for them. However, I do agree with other comments on here of people we have witnessed (non driver) racing off to claim a pitch, before others before them in the queue were still checking in. And of course, plenty do get to Hillhead before the permitable entry time - and are still allowed to enter the site & claim their pitch - not fair. Why make rules if you can't adhere to them? I think the system of the CCC is a fair system, where many of the site wardens walk you to you pitch, or tell you what number pitch is nominated to you. We use public transport while here, which we've found to be reliable & cheap, with bus stops outside the site - ideal. We didn't get chance to use the shop/bar/pool facilities on this occasion, however, they were up & running. Toilet/Shower blocks were clean. Why some people can't be bothered to use the rubber band system is mystifying. We've booked for next year already - I hope the Club can nip in the bud these issues of checking in early, which is not fair on others. Follow the procedures of the CCC perhaps??

Excellent site, chaotic check in/pitch allocation

Personally speaking, we couldn’t fault the location of Hillhead as we travelled daily to our boat in Kingswear Marina - either driving or on the bus which stopped right outside the site entrance. The site bar was excellent with very good food and the bar staff were particularly friendly, helpful and patient, especially considering everyone wanted to see the Euros! The site was spotlessly clean and well maintained. However, as new members, this was our first visit to a large Club site and finding a pitch on such an enormous site was chaotic to say the least. We thought check in staff would at least guide us in the right direction but we were just given a site map and told to find a pitch with a white post, which would probably be ok on a smaller site, but on a site this large and complex with hedged cul de sacs, was time consuming and tricky manoeuvring a large motorhome. Also, the site was fully booked which made finding a pitch doubly difficult. This caused several ‘traffic jams’ around the site. Check in was 1pm but some people had been queuing outside all morning. Members who had visited Hillhead previously sent their co drivers off on foot to ‘save’ a pitch - obviously that’s the way to do it! Only other negative was the lack of water points for motorhomes. Just one MH service point with water tap. Other taps were available but on the roads around the site, which would’ve involved blocking access. Having said all that, we loved the position of the site, and our pitch (once we moved) and would definitely return.

Some good, some bad

We have just returned from an 8 night stay. Agree with others regarding the entry time onto the site. If you have a published time, please stick to it. Some people either didn't understand the band system for the toilet block or just ignored it completely. The system is there to protect us all so why people chose to ignore it is beyond belief. Dog poo found next to the play equipment, dog owners deciding to exercise their dogs on the recreation field and not in designated area. Dog poo by the bins which was then stood in. Some dog owner was too lazy to exercise his dog and let him wee and poo on the tent pitches. Club staff and food was good, staff worked very hard and were always friendly. Site staff were not the friendliest, not all but some were more than grumpy. Did we have a great holiday, yes. Would we go back, no. Would we recommend to others, yes, for the area.

Very Busy...

Site very good. The location is ideal for Brixham, Torbay and Dartmouth. The bus stops right outside the site. Good walking area. Disappointed though that on arriving at 1.00 pm (the time as stated as being the earliest time of arrival) that on a site of 243 pitches we had a choice of about three of the poorest pitches on site. The following day we realised that people were being checked into the site at 11 am. If the club have rules on when to arrive then shouldn’t they stick to them. Whilst everyone was grabbing the best pitches i was parked in a lay-by on the A380 as I didn’t realise you could get into the site so early.
