Hillhead out of season

Just had 3 nights on site, lovely site usual club standards. The addition of the bar and restaurant was very welcome as each night they had a special offer on which were all excellent value. The bus outside the site is great £5.00 for a day ticket for unlimited travel in the Torbay area. Not sure I would enjoy it so much in the summer when the site is full but out of season I would certainly return for another visit. Walking from the site is not easy as the roads are narrow with no footpaths. I have only given one tick for families as we do not travel with children so take no notice of that, I would imagine the play area, playing field and swimming pool are a big attraction to families

We'll go again

We stayed on this site for 5 nights in September 2018 in our motorhome. It was our first time on this site The site is evidently well managed and the facilities are kept very clean. We arrived on the day after the clubhouse ceased its lunchtime opening, so only used it once. The "off-season" menu is also restricted, but even so offered reasonable value. Others have commented on the size of the hard standing pitches and our "non-awning" pitch was particularly narrow. While we were there the pool was popular but we gave it a miss. The views from the "top" of the site were spectacular, particularly at sunset The bus stop right outside the front gate offered regular services into Brixham and Paignton, from where connecting bus or train services opened up a wide range of day trip possibilities. We visited Totnes, Torquay and Teignmouth and the couple on the next pitch told us about a day out in Plymouth. We had "done" Kingswear and Dartmouth on a previous visit to the area so gave them a miss this time We will be going back

A wonderful holiday

This was our second time staying at Hill Head where we stayed for two weeks. We had a great pitch and could see the sea from our caravan. As I’m disabled our pitch was a service one at the top and was great as I could reach the toilet block easy on my scooter. The amenities were lovely and clean and tidy. The wardens were exceptional and were always on hand to help if we needed it. If all goes well we are likely to return another time as it is central for where we love to visit. There was just one point I would like to raise and that it would have been nice to have a bit more room on the hard standing pitches.

First Stay

First stay at this site, very popular site, really well managed by the team of wardens . Shower blocks, spotless. We did not eat in the clubhouse at night, so can not comment on the food, but the drinks were not very expensive, and a really friendly team behind the bar. We did the bridle and coastal path walk to Brixham, Strong footwear advised, there are some inclines. Good bus services outside the gate, going to Kingswear (then ferry to Dartmouth), Brixham and Paignton. We got the bus to Paignton then the train to Dawlish, £6.40 return on train, a great day out. My only grouse has nothing to do with the club, but to one of the previous occupants on pitch No 51 (hard standing pitch) who smoked Mayfair Cigarettes, Who thought it was quite acceptable, after finishing a smoke to throw the used cigarette butts all over the pitch. (If you read this you will know who you are) But don’t worry, I collected them all up for you, and threw them in the bins provided, it was not very pleasant to eat our lunch outside, with cigarette butts around our feet, also quite sad to see a small Robin, pecking at one of your cigarette butts thinking it was food, you should be ashamed. But I doubt you will.

Great time

Had a great time on this site, we could not find a level pitch but used our ramps and eventually settled on one with a fantastic view out over the ocean. We had fairly good weather and to sit outside having breakfast was a ideal start to the day. Because we are motor homers good public transport links are important and Hillhead has this in spades, in our four days on site we visited Brixham, Dartmouth and Torquay, it is possible to walk into Brixham but the roads are very narrow and my wife didn't fancy taking the risk. But the bus stops, to go in both directions are directly outside the gate so no problem there. I love to swim and because the pool was kept to a comfortable temperature I managed a half hour session every night even in overcast conditions. The bar was very good, not too expensive, the entertainment was a bonus especially one girl, I think her name was Lucy who did the best Whitney Houston I have ever heard in a club of this calibre. We spoke to some campers who were there when the schools were on holiday and some of the stories they told us were horrendous, most of the staff looked shattered and I think this was because the kids were running riot with no parental control as they were all in the bar. We would never visit this site during school holidays so no issue for us, but come on CAMHC during school holidays get some security on sites like this, you do have a duty of care to your staff and your membership, some of which actually had there units damaged overnight. I don't like to finish on a negative so all I can say is we have already booked to return in November and will definitely be returning next year, well done to all the staff for surviving the school holidays and keeping this site up to the usual CAMNC standards.

Disappointed

On arrival found the woman on reception to be unwelcoming and almost rude. Got soaked on this large site trying to find a pitch suitable for our vehicle which is 7.5m, 8m with bikes on rack. Only pitches available were in silly little cul de sacs. Woman on reception insisted all pitches are suitable for vehicles up to 9m, this is not the case. We then found there were around 6 couples doing the same. One couple in particular had booked 3 months in advance to find themselves searching for a pitch. The pitches are not level either. Only stayed one night and did not use facilities as were keen to get away. Will not be returning to this site.

Slight dissapointment

The site is brilliant, the staff generally most helpful. The facilities are immaculate and the shop has basic foods and papers. We have stayed on this site several times as there is a bus stop outside to take you to Kingswear and to Brixham so very good transport links. But, we could not access the internet from our pitch, it says in the book that the wifi is Silver which should be really good. On previous visits we have had amazing wifi, but we could not get the wifi at all, it was dropping out all the time so we had to walk up to the reception area to use the computer and this was a bit of a nuisance. Reception gave us a number to call to complain, but we access the wifi through the Caravan Club so did not think it was up to us to find a phone to call these people. We were on a fully serviced pitch (181) which was very good, but it obviously did not include wifi!

Fantastic stay

Stayed here the start of the 1st week of September kids gone back. On arrival couldn’t of been any nicer the receptionist was friendly and polite. The site was still nearly fully booked and was limited on good pitches. We got set up in the top field and it was fantastic very peaceful and pleasant people surrounding us. The two toilet blocks were immaculate the whole time. The site in my opinion is so tidy and clean the staff do a great job. No rude wardens anywhere. No constant garden machinery. The club house and pool was fantastic really enjoyed the entertainment. The location of this site is great in the middle of all the places to visit with the bus stop right outside. We stayed here last year in the school holidays for the regatta and had no problems but decided this year to wait until the school holidays finished. For us out of school holidays is better as the site was so peaceful and the people on site so friendly. Looking forward to returning year after year. Well done to the staff you are doing a fantastic job and thanks for making our stay enjoyable.

Some Good and some not so good

Generally same comments of previous reviews-problems with finding a suitable site ,pitches not allocated on arrival & lots of cul de sacs - difficult to reverse with a towing caravan. Site well maintained & kept tidy. Lots of teenagers accumulate in the park until late in the evening after 10pm & noisy .It appears that you can arrive as early in the morning as you like lots of caravans /motorhomes arriving as early as 9am on several days .people leaving ignoring the one-way system shop & restaurant staff very helpful & friendly Restaurant food excellent pizza's better than any take away , facilities very clean, site staff very friendly but unfortunately need to enforce site rules & also close park at dusk Wishy Washy children's entertain was brilliant but could do with being slightly later so families could eat their dinner first & the tv screens turned off.

Another Great year

Another great visit to Hillhead, we enjoy Hillhead and have already booked for next year thanks to the new booking system. The site is great to get to places and visit Torquay and Dartmouth. **Tip for the Dartmouth ferry which is 5-10 mins away from the site is to buy Ferry Saver card £20 gets you 10 single trips to 5 return visits, instead of £10 return.** We find the staff on arrival are helpful and if you ask them what they free they are more than happy to colour in the map for, but they are limited as to what pitches are free as people don't tell them straight away, and the restaurant is great if you can not be bother to cook. Only thing I would say is that non members need to be reminded about the club rules, and the toilet blocks have a 30 min cross over when they are both closed (they normally finish early and are reopened but sometimes you done want to risk been cut short)
