Wet Wild an Windy

Our first visit to Hawes almost a non starter. After an eventful ride over the tops from ingleton.( Car blew a hose off an struggled with power then hit a rock in flood water which took mover out.)We limped into site to a nice warm welcome an sited van.A pint was needed to calm ones nerves so off we went. Very impressed with White Hart pub. Had the best steak an ale pie I have ever eaten. Fantastic! On Saturday a visit to creamery, well worth a look then fixed car and took it on a test drive to Tan hill inn. Its the highest pub in Britain with beautiful all be it damp views. A cracking weekend in more ways than one.would defo recommend for a short break.

Learning curve

Wardens very friendly and chatty got my booking mixed up with another lady but we laughed about it. Unfortunately motorhome broke down right outside reception but warden there to help out and got it moving, well as far as pitch then in stopped right across road. A fellow camper came out to help us and was ready to push us into pitch. All this was in the rain so want to than them both for so much help and understanding which was appreciated as new to this motorhome adventures. The site itself is excellent and look forward to returning in better weather and fully working vehicle. Facilities were excellent and very clean couldn't fault it. As for the dog walk area this was perfect my dog was able to run free and chase rabbits. If it wasn't for the help of the warden and them being understanding to our problem and allowed us to stay while RAC was fixing the vehicle it would have made for a total disaster and might have put us off going away in the future. Only reason didn't get all stars for good for families is can't really comment but they could run around dig field if they wanted.

And it rained.

We have stayed at this site on numerous occasions but never known rain like it. None stop for three days but warm with. Beyond a compulsory visit to the Cheese Factory and a meal out the rest of the time was spent with friends, playing Canaster, Crib, Dominoes and Sequence. So far as the site is concerned it is as good as ever. The wardens couldn't have been more helpful, especially when we had to leave our van behind for two days as the 45 to 60 mph winds made it unsafe to tow until they abated. The toilet block was as ever well cared for but marked down as I believe it is looking a little tired and a make over would help. Outdoor entertainment for children is limited and the site is very much one used by retired folk.We unfortunately had the regular yapping and howling of a dog possibly because it was disturbed by the wind but as dog owners ourselves, although it did disturb the quiet, we understood their problem. All in all it is a good site still well worthy of a re-visit and if it has one overriding negative,it's a positive if that makes sense. It's too popular, so much so that at busy times it feels like you are cheek by jowl. My advice, go out of season, book late and check the weather before doing so.

Suprised by warden

Back again, three years on the run. Great site deserves all the good reviews. I was a bit taken aback by the strength of the lecture regarding pitching up to the pitch marker. After 20+ years as a member I think I have grasped both the idea and the need. The only other time I can remember a warden with the same attitude was at Durham, perhaps last year. Not sure but could it be the same Lady. When I asked about the fireworks display at Hawes She was ok but when I asked about the display at Bedale the following night she retorted " I only know about Hawes I don't know anything about Bedale" not the style of reply I have been used to during my membership of the club. Still, the site and its location made up for my experience, might go back next year but, then again, maybe not!!

Where's the sign

Where do you start. Well lets begin with the obvious where is the sign.I have been before (in another life) but that was at least 20 years before.I had to go through Hawes to come back to the correct road to the site.Still when we did arrive  after a problematic start to the journey the Wardens were very welcoming although i may not have been!and i must apologize for that it was one of those days!!!The site is brilliant and you don't need to use a car if you don't want. All the comments of places to visit that other members have left are well informed but we must have caught the fish and chip shop on a bad day? I do not like precooked chips .Crisps are softer but the  fish and batter was nice. This is a site we will visit again but we will try not to leave 20 years between that and hopefully the rain will hold off?

Lovely site in a lovely position

Right on the edge of picturesque Hawes and the wonderful Dales. Very friendly reception and helpful too. The facilities are good and well kept. Very hard to fault in any way. We'll recommend this site to friends and definitely go again for a longer stay.

Excellent Stay!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the site, wardens were friendly as usual and the site/facilities were spotlessly clean. We loved the location being only a 10 minute walk into Hawes and there are plenty of walks around on public footpaths, we did not have to get in the car until we left! The service pitches are great no fetching and carrying of water. We shall have to come back again in the Spring of 2016 as t was some 6 years since we last visited.

Good Site, the road in, not so.

First impression wasn’t good when I went to book in. The warden (M. Payne) told me that I had a pitch with an awning. I wasn’t putting up an awning so thought that I would let her know that out of courtesy. Well, the sharp reply was “well, that is what you booked”. OK, fair enough, it was, but that was no way to reply, bit rude I thought. “Have you been her before” she then asked. When I said no, she said “Welcome to Hawes” as if she was reading it from a script card; no smiles and no real welcome to be honest. Anyway, I got booked in and found a pitch that suited us. I needed to use the ramps to level us but that happens more often than not so, no problem. The site is located next to a farm and can be rather smelly and noisy at times but that didn’t put us off too much. The facilities were clean but dated so time to refurbish I think. There is a great dog walk on site and many walks direct from the site i.e. no need to drive if you don’t want to. Hawes is a lovely little place only a 10 minute walk from the site. It has many pubs, places to eat and a good supermarket. We had to drive approx. 28 miles in from the M6 to get to Hawes and the road is a nightmare. Very narrow in places and you do not want to meet another vehicle of equal or greater size coming the opposite way. Would I go back? If it wasn’t for the road in, then yes but for that reason only, probably not. However, do not let that put you off, it is a good site in a great location so give it a try.

Short Break

We have been here numerous times. As usual, peace and quiet was guaranteed! We stayed on a full service pitch - these are well spaced and of course fully serviced. Very helpful wardens. The showers are now looking tired though and ready for a revamp, but they're clean and the water nice and hot. Lots of short and long walks to choose from. Great food and beer in Hawes too - we especially like The Crown in Hawes and like walking to Hardraw to The Green Dragon. We will be back!
