Just returned from our second visit to this site, we had a very relaxing stay. Great location and facilities all nice and clean.
The location is great, with a short walk into town
We also enjoyed the surrounding areas, helped though by us having out bikes with us.
Good for walking also with a couple of maps provided for two circular walks.
Will visit again next year.
Our recent visit to Hawes
We visited Hawes in August, we travelled over 300 miles and were dreading the journey but left early and did well, completing the journey in six and a half hours. The book says to ignore satnav on arrival from the east which we did, but it was actually spot on and as a consequence of this we ended up the other side of Hawes and had to run around, no mean feat with a caravan on the back.
We were ‘greeted’ by a disgruntled warden who asked us to leave the site as we were early and told us ‘you have passed at least ten lay-bys you could have parked in’. We parked up in a nearby industrial park, as told, and returned later. Not the best start.
The site itself I would say is a bog standard CAMC site. The best area is the service pitch part but £4.40 per night extra?? It’s location is superb, a short walk to Hawes, Hardraw Waterfall and the Wensleydale Creamery, everywhere else is a good drive away so be prepared to travel.
We found the wardens unhelpful and unfriendly, they barely managed a wince let alone a ‘good morning’, the only time we saw them was when they emptied the bins, they remained huddled in the office, one of them actually stood in back room ironing on one occasion! There were thistles and nettles growing on pitches, the grass remained uncut and the toilet block walls were covered in dead midgies and windows covered in midgie covered cobwebs. The smell from the nearby farm was retching. Luckily we were aware of this before arrival and parked as far away as we could but it was still pretty strong.
We decided to leave a day early and gave the wardens over 72 hours notice. The warden said the refund was in place but didn’t need the card to complete the refund. After ten days no refund. Turns out she did need the card. When the staff at Hawes finally answered their phone, this after I left a message which went unanswered, she was rude and kept repeating ‘You’ll have to get in touch with Head Office as it’s out of our hands’. Basically they messed up, I had to accept site night vouchers instead which is fine, though I would have preferred not to have made several phone calls and sent emails in order to get customer satisfaction.
Just as we rembered
We had previously stayed at this site around 10 years ago when we owned a caravan. However, we have just recently purchased a campervan and decided that our first night in our campervan would be the Hawes site. In that time lots has changed. For the first time we used the on-site facilities and were really impressed as they were immaculate. Our arrival was most welcoming as we parked up at the reception, a very pleasant gentleman came out and introduced the site to us and booked us in. We reported back having given our pitch number and all three of the staff present were most professional and helpful. We pitched up next to the farm immediately across from a dry stone wall. “Lots of country atmosphere” came to mind and for us was perfectly acceptable and gave us the country feel so absolutely no issues there. There was a massive change since we last visited particularly as we were dog owners. Our last visit around 10 yrs ago only, the site only had a narrow 2 metre wide path (ish) around the site. not now!!. Although the path is still there, there’s a huge field between the path and the campsite itself that has pathways neatly groomed criss-crossing the field itself. For us this is a huge bonus and has meant we’ll stay here again (booked again next month) as the site has everything we need, in abundance. Hawes village/market town itself is only a 10-min walk from the site and is fantastic. Access to pubs/restaurants/shops is also in abundance. Night time at the site is a bonus. The area is largely light-pollution free meaning you can clearly see stars/moonlight across swathes of the Yorkshire Dales. Overall the staff were helpful and most professional. The site facilities were immaculate and the surrounding the same. We will become regulars in the not too distant future.
Nail biting roads to a lovely site
This was the first time we had stayed in our motorhome on a CC site (new motorhomers!). The trip was hair raising, as we had come through some very hilly, narrow, winding roads. We had booked for two nights on two different pitches, the first fully serviced, and the second a standard pitch. The fully serviced pitch was useful, but the part of the site was not as nice as the rest! The shower and toilets were spotless. There was fantastic walking nearby, and we walked to the waterfall close by, where there is a little tea room. The walk to Hawes is short, and has the best chip shop in the country! Unfortunately we had noisy neighbours on our second night, but this was not the fault of the site. I would recommend this site, but try to avoid the road with the little tiny single lane bridge! Beware of your sat navs instructions! We will return.
Finally made it here
At long last we finally made a booking to stay here. Usually stay at Lower Wensleydale but thought we would give Hawes a try having visited the town many times over the years. Friendly welcome from the wardens and found pitch 17 a good place to choose as bit out of the way. Furthest walk to toilet block though - not ideal when your husband has just done Great North run and you have no onboard facilities in campervan! Disabled toilet is unlocked when the main ones are being cleaned which is helpful. Yes there are farm noises but coming from a rural village we are used to this and find road noise more of a problem at other sites. Ear plugs are handy :) Great dog walk too though some people seemed to think the grass by the toilet block was a better option.
Pubs all booked up for evening meals so we joined friends at the Kings Arms in Askrigg which was excellent. Cafes all busy too on Tuesday for market day but the cafe at the station was great and welcomes dogs. Nice walk across the fields to Hardraw although first bit is on the road (there is a path behind the wall for part of it but its not obvious).
We probably prefer Lower Wensleydale of the two - just because it is smaller and laid out more informally though Hawes is a shorter walk into town.
Hawes Club. A Pub (Free hiuse )Welcomes C&MHC members
We think Hawes is a great place to visit . Scenic site . Well run by wardens . Easy.stroll to village ( 10 mins ) . Highlight of our visit was finding.the Hawes Club just on the bridge in the one way street . Very cheap prices and a.comfy place to sit and have a.few drinks . lovely staff said " Caravaners are most welcome" . Just call in . Open 12 mid day to 11pm . Only one issue with the. Caravan site is poor TV RECEPTION while the repairs are going on at bilsdale transmitter . Even with Clubs booster tv plug in its hopeless. We gave up . Nice walk to Hardraw FALLS . And the fabulous Green Dragon public house . A real "oldy world pub "with real fires etc 20 mins walk from site . proper paths across fields. No mud ! Enjoy
Spotless site, Awful male warden.
We arrived at this site an hour early as we had travelled from the south coast, we didn’t think it would be a problem and took our dogs for a quick walk.
On our return the male warden had appeared and started having a go oat us for parking there early and we should move immediately, he was rude and so unhelpful and told us to park in the industrial estate for an hour…
I was so upset I wanted to go home I felt so unwelcome but my husband persuaded me to stay and give it a try. I think this chap need to go on a customer service course because if he talked to my customers like that he would be on a warning if not sacked as it looks by previous reviews this is not the first time.
Also there wasn’t any information about the t.v. Point on the hook up??? We didn’t have t.v. For the week but not a problem, but would liked to have known about it.
The wifi is patchy and not worth the £11 for the week.
Other than that the site is spotless and shower block is spotless, and the area outstanding.
I would say was a bit unnerving having people in hi vis jackets coming round checking every night, what are they checking? Everyone in bed?…
The Yorkshire Dales are beautiful people are lovely so don’t be put off use a different site.
Loved it here, will be returning for sure
Quiet, and almost too quiet because it made us paranoid to even speak outside our van! but a really lovely site. Great walks on the doorstep, lovely town in half a mile, a brilliant dog walking area where they can be off lead and many rabbits to sniff out. Facilities were immaculate and very good condition, and it's great to have a shower that doesn't keep stopping after 10 seconds. Wardens were lovely and helpful. Will most certainly be returning.
Great Location, Not So Great Site
This site has such unrealised potential. Its situated in one of the most beautiful parts of Britain but it's being let down. I don't want to make a big issue of it but the guy who met us was officious and condescending, not great attributes for a customer facing role.
The site itself I'd describe as a bit unloved. I don't know if it's meant to be one of those sites which are left to go a bit wild but it didn't quite seem like that, just that the grass hadn't been cut and nettles left to grow near the gates from the toilet block.
This site is only a short walk from Hawes with it's numerous shops, pubs and restaurants as well as a weekly market (Tuesday I think). This more than makes up for the niggles and I'll definitely return.
Hawes August visit
Site was full to capacity and we were lucking to get a last minute couple of days. Lovely friend site with lots of interesting walks. Friendly village with interesting shops.
Well worth being on potential visit lists.
