Excellent location

We stayed just for one night because we had tickets for an event at the nearby East of England Arena. We've been to events at that Arena dozens of times but never explored the area. The site is excellent, big level pitches, spotless modern facilities, a warm welcome and right next door, a massive country park with huge lakes. Brilliant for cycling, dog walking, bird watching, etc. Completely quiet and peaceful, but loads of shops, restaurants etc a short drive away. It's great. Perhaps not the most obviously picturesque part of the country but a pleasant surprise.

amazing

After 30 years as caravaners this is our first stay at FM. We know the country park well as we are locals, it is lovely, but we wouldn't have considered bringing the caravan were it not for having work done on our house and the need to be out the way yet stay local. Its been fantastic. Just my opinion but this is one of the best sites on the network. We stayed on the East side because we prefer grass pitches. Grass is short ,ground firm and relatively flat. enough shade if you need it but a feeling of light and openness, none of the glowring heavy cover you can get with trees. Pitches are divided into areas so whilst quite large the site doesn't feel it. Possibly a downside is that there's only one amenities block and it would be a bit of a trek from some pitches and may be a bit pushed if the site was full. However that's a very minor quibble. We didn't need the services of the wardens directly but they were a cheerful friendly bunch when we saw them on their rounds and the site is very clean and well maintained. Arrivals are well organised. This is a large busy site but doesn't feel it. If walking or cycling is your thing you won't be disappointed, there is literally miles off road easy going well maintained tracks on your doorstep. Watersports for all ages literally next door, try a pedalo on one of the lakes or have a go at paddle boarding. The site is a day trip away from the coast for a change. Short trip out? Try Stamford for a lovely town with super shops and places to eat. Springfields at Spalding also worth a visit. There is so much to do for all ages and abilities. I had limited expectations but I shouldn't have. This place is great.

Great location and wonderful park

Unfortunately there was a lot of loud noise from the Truckfest at the East of England site and the toilets were in a dreadful state late on in the day but it’s a great location and nice site and still enjoyed the stay.

Great location!

Our first visit here on a bank holiday weekend. The Wardens were super busy with a steady flow of arrivals but this went quite smoothly for us arriving at 3pm. The site is divided into East and West, separated by quite a busy road. We were on the West side and we were on a good flat pich for our Motorhome. The site is clean and tidy and the facilities were a liitle dated but there was plenty of hot water. The male toilets were blocked one morning and there was a queue of not very happy men awaiting the plumber. It seems plumbing is an issue here. The location of this site is what makes it so nice - literally 2 minutes from the beautiful Nene Park and some fabulous walks and wildlife. We walked into Peterborough which was about 75 mins each way but it was worth it to see the stunning cathedral. One concern was the amount of children recklessly riding their bikes at some speed and weaving around,my heart was in my mouth a couple of times when cars were coming on site, but I dont know what the answer is to that one! We had a lovely long weekend and would definitely return.

Arrival Time

We regularly use Ferry Meadows it is a lovely site. Wardens have not always been the best but this year they seem fine. We very often arrive quite early to the site as we use the A14 which is notorious for hold ups. This year we arrived at 1215hrs so waited in Wistow Way till 1235hrs then proceeded to site. I would point out that in our experience previously the site usually lets people through the outer gate from about 1125hrs (old arrival times). When we got to the gate we used intercom to tell of our arrival and got the terse reply "your 25mins early". We then saw who we thought was the warden walking over to us and as she was approaching the car said again with a not particularly friendly tone "Mr Wales I take it". She then in the same unfriendly tone told as we would have to leave as we were early and they did not let anyone in until 1300hrs. I then asked if she would let us through so that we could turn round to leave the site. Pointing to the guy on the next gate in her same unfriendly tone she said "he will let you through". You might think i am complaining about not being let in but this is not the case as i have always thought that all the sites should do exactly this and turn people away until the correct time as this would be better than the situation at present when all sites differ. I did object to the way she spoke to us which was not as per the club magazine stated this month (the wardens provide a warm and friendly service to members. and our staff are passionate about delivering great customer service"). So we went back to Wistow Way to wait until the stated entry time of 1300hrs. We arrived back at the gate at 1301hrs and there were already caravans on site looking for spots and several more within the outer gate waiting to go through. So much to my disappointment we were lied to about the time they let people on site. So i was very disappointed as i thought at last the club are being serious and all sites would stick rigidly to the correct time. The point is if they let people in at 1245 this time next time might well get there at 1240hrs etc. So it is all self defeating if they do not stick rigidly to 1300hrs. We actually watched the gate from the site we were on for the next 2 weeks and discovered that they let people through the outer gate at 1245hrs and let them through the inner gate at 1250hrs. Plus different sites will set there own times as in the past and so we are no better off about what time to arrive. We later discovered that the warden who spoke to us at the gate was in fact not the warden but amazingly was there to train staff. She should have training on how to speak to members to fall in with the description in this months magazine ie provide a warm and friendly service to members and passionate about delivering great customer service. The lady in question did have occasion to speak with us again about a windbreak positioning while she was absolutely correct it was done in the same unfriendly tone.

A little disappointed

We have visited Ferry Meadows 3 times before and found the staff an facilities were good. However some of the chemical waste points water supply leaked badly. The staff on this visit were not as friendly as before. No Serviced pitches available on what is quite a large site. Saying all this will not put us off going back.

another good stay

Had a lovely stay here. The only downside was the amount of vans arriving we were 15mins early(hard to get the timing right) so we had to drive in and out and go up the road and come back. However I have to say the staff handled the 80 vans in quick time. There were 180 vans arriving the following week so that could cause problems as theres nowhere to turn around. The trouble is people arrive early or dead on time to get the best pitch. On a site like this I feel pitches should be allocated on booking and that way people dont need to rush to get there first. I know other private sites do this and although I dont want this to be a regular occurance if it helps and prevents the site closing that I would be prepared to accept it. Its a great site for walking and we will be back. The staff were all brilliant . Recommend not arriving till 1.15.

1st time and won't be the last

Our very 1st experience of caravaning, Was a bit nervous on arrival being a newbie, but Andy who met us at the barrier was fantastic.... He explained everything and told me to find him if I had any problems setting up. My partner went into reception and was also very well looked after. Of we drove round the site to pitch up for the very 1st time, found a nice little pitch in the far corner and after a few minor adjustments we were in. Not long after i had connected all the services Andy appeared to make sure I was ok...... We had a great evening and the 6st Rotty was very well behaved for his 1st time also. Next morning we started to pack up for home and who should appear??? Andy was checking everything had gone according to plan...... We will most definitely be using Ferry Meadows as our regular weekends away as we only live 20mins drive....

Room for Improvements

One of our many return visits to Ferry Meadows over the years. In fact, it was the first campsite we ever visited about 40 years ago almost to the day! We were on the West site which is predominantly hardstandings and is open all year but the section across the road was still closed at the time of our stay. Its four years since our last stay and it was disappointing that a more modern open grill motorhome waste point had still not been installed in this section of the site. There is space at the end of the toilet block for a drive through emptying point. The current waste point is almost unusable  because of its position as you can't get your drain tap over the drain without blocking the road. This is the first site we have been on with the dual white peg system. Personally, I had no problems with pitching correctly using one peg but I assume there have been issues. A casual observation from walking around the site seems to suggest that it seems to be helping. I was surprised that there was nothing for sale in reception, beyond gas and toilet chemicals. If you run out of milk you have a good mile to walk to the nearest shop! I also clearly misjudged the start of the Easter holidays as the found the site at £31 a night quite expensive with Good Friday being 10 days away! On the plus side Ferry Meadows has lots to do in the immediate area around the site. The Nene Park provides plenty of walking and cycling. Also, near to the site is the Nene Valley Railway, check online for timetable information. Just a bit further on a nice Garden Centre and next door a Beefeater Restaurant.

Recent Kindness ...........

Arrived on Sat. 12th and had a fall within a couple of hours of being on site. A lady warden provided a suitable bandage and came to enquire how I was later on. After our departure a few days later I was contacted at home to see how I was. I was most touched and hope this small thank you reaches her.
