Better than expected

This was our second of six stops on our four weeker and was chosen as a stop over, however we wish now that we had booked for longer than just three nights. Access to the site was immediately off of the motorway - within 50 yards and the reason we chose to stay only for a short while but the noise from motorway traffic was a lot less than expected, in fact, not too intrusive at all. The site itself was up to the usual standards we have come to expect from the CC and it's proximity to Durham was great, walkable if that's your preference but the bus (park and ride) is only about half a mile away so we walked there and left the car on site, I must add though that cycling was not an option for us due to the busy main road. Durham City is a lovely place and really well worth a visit and we found northern folk very friendly and easy to talk to.

GREAT FOR WHAT I NEEDED

As with all Caravan Club Sites this one is great for purpose (I was working in Chester-Le-Street for 3 days so just wanted somewhere to lay my head). The facilities and cleanliness of the site up to the usual high standards. The site is just off the A1 and can be quite noisy but not to the extent that is stops you sleeping... Close to Durham and other North Eastern attractions so great if you are wanting to look around that part of the country. If I was holidaying in the area I would have no problem going back to this site. I can see what people mean about getting a caravan into the site, it is difficult and if 2 arrive at the same time I would imagine quite dangerous as one Caravan would be camped on the road! Warden was great on arrival and departure.

Good situation

Easy to access this site is super for visiting the local area. A very tidy site with helpful wardens and the usual very clean facilities. There is some road noise from the A1M which is louder at one end of the site than the other but it is not unbearable. We were pitched behind the toilet block which screened the noise slightly. There is a lot to see locally for all the family and this site is very central for touring. The on site dog walk is limited but there is a good walk by the river just off site. We enjoyed our visit and will go back.

Good site but not for me.

Yes its clean, friendly wardens, tidy grass etc but it just lacks holiday spirit. We hardly saw anyone sitting out and everyone seemed to hide in there vans. The site is really good for overnight stopovers on route to somewhere else or for shopping trips to Metro center etc but we wouldn't recommend it for a peaceful holiday. The A1 being close by is noisy at all times and if you want to go for a walk then you will have to negotiate the A1 roundabout on foot.

Didn't stay long enough!

Contrary to the reviews I have just read we intend to visit again and stay longer.  Totally underestimated what there was to see.  The site was clean.  Perhaps worth remembering that this site is on the edge of a city - it is not a idyllic rural retreat.  Place for both in the club network. Guess site was a bit noisy but it was Saturday night and there were children away for the weekend.  Seemed like a site layout problem that was causing escaping balls.  There is a big green area with vans around and the big green area had room for ball games - it happens. Not necessarily Durham specific - just wish parents wouldn't forget that they came with children and need to keep an eye on them especially when they play on a vehicle access area. Maybe avoid the weekend or school holidays but the site is worth the visit.

Quiet weekend?

Not for us! Been many times before with no issues, this time was marred by one unit partying all day and late into the evening. One night there was even a motorbike giving their kids rides around the site?

Weekend away

We have just returned from durham from a weekend with our good friends. But return home disappointed as the site seems to lack a presence of wardens who care there was an outfit who played loud music and when we complained the warden did go over but as soon as he left they turned up the music again . We heard horror stories from other caravans about how standard have changed and not for the better we feel that we won't be coming back here again. Standard of cleaning where high .

Disapointing stay

we have just returned from the Spring Bank weekend and sadly it was disappointing. We had to raise the matter of noisy neighbours who were " partying " from lunch time to gone 10:30 every day / night. They had friends who came every day and joined in , they played music full blast and were drinking so much that their children were not being attended to. We raised the matter to the warden who said he had been to them regarding them playing football near to caravans. However his words didn't make any difference of this I mentioned to him the next day, only for him to reply " well there is nothing stopping you from having a word with them " to which I replied that he got paid to see to such matters I didn't. And that I would be informing the caravan club of this matter. I learned later that 2 caravans were moving to quieter pitches because of these people, this shouldn't have had to happen . The offenders should have been removed from the site. The wardens had several complaints about the noise etc . This is something that they should have dealt with not by just giving a warning. As for the dog walk on this site, well its a joke really, as we soon found when we tried walking our 3 little dogs. It turned out to be no more than a muddy, pebbly uneven wooded path. There is certainly room for improvement here. We ended up walking our dogs off site , which can be quite precarious with the caravans. There needs to be a recreation field where football and other games can be played so that there is no footballing, cricket, frisbie throwing near to caravans. As this is also something the dreaded party animals were also party to . The site was very clean as all Caravan club sites are but this is the only thing in this sites favour. Getting to the site from the A 1is quite dangerous as you are straight onto a busy dual carriage way which as an opening to get over the centre barriers to the site. Doing this with a caravan is totally unsafe as you need a wide swing and end up with cars coming down your offside. Not good. Needless to say this site is not for us.

I'll be back

Just spent a lovely weekend at Durham Grange. Ideally placed for visiting Durham itself or the nearby coastline. Lovely wardens and very clean toilets and showers. Will be back soon.
