Good location to explore from

I would have given full marks for every category if not for the fact that Durham Grange is a site which really demands you travel from it using your own transport. There is a park and ride on the other side of the motorway but unfortunately there is no pedestrian friendly way to walk into Durham and no bus stop outside the site. Otherwise it has some of the most friendly, helpful wardens I have ever come across. It has a children's playground and is very open and flat so safe for kids to ride their bikes and scooters on site. The facilities are immaculate but could do with an extra shower or two, there were queues on two days around 8-8.30am. Durham is a stunning city with a UNESCO world heritage cathedral and there are many other fantastic places to visit, all within a half hour drive, ranging from coast to countryside.

Friendly & welcoming Site

On arrival we received a warm friendly welcome, and even got to borrow a mallet, with a few giggles about setting up our awning. The facilities & grounds were absolutely immaculate. The pitch was also very well maintained. Such a brilliant site to visit if you want to visit Durham, Newcastle or other attractions.  We were very blessed to have gorgeous sunny weather and I'm sure that's down to the sunny personalities of the staff.

Ideal location to visit Durham

A stop off for 3 nights on our 5 week tour from Cornwall to the Orkney Islands. A site well up to the Camping Club standard. We noted criticism of the site about noise. With the A1(M) to the east and the main road to Durham to the south one has to accept there will be road noise. Pedestrian access to the Park & Ride is difficult. The path going to the P&R is OK but not good when returning as you have no view of traffic coming up the slip road from the A1(M) best to go farther west to opposite the west side of the road to the site before you cross. We would support a campaign to extend this footpath which I guess would not cost much but the bureaucracy would cost a fortune.

Excellent Site

Durham was our first time away in our new van, to say we were pleased was an understatement, the facilities were excellent and the staff (Steve & Steve) were really helpful. Would definitely visit again. Kids loved it. Never heard any noise from the main road near by. Because this was so good it has set the bar high for our next Caravan Club holiday.

Durham or stop over

Ideal for Durham or overnight stop going north or south. Very clean and facilities of usual high standard. The park and ride is walkable with care but not for those with mobility issues. Crossing the road outside the site is worst part, blind bend with fast traffic, my advice is ignore footpath at this point and cross over nearer to the junction where you turn into the site and you get a better view of traffic coming around the bend. Only negatives were some parents not controlling their kids, playing football next to caravans and some picking up stones from empty pitches and throwing them at each other! But love Durham so will return again.

Easy access to Durham

Located alongside the A1M, hence not a quiet site, but conversely quick and easy access to major roads. Mention is made by other reviewers about the nearby park and ride, access to which is across a very busy road.  However, the local taxi only charges £5.00 to Durham centre, so in my view this is the best way to visit this beautiful city.

Very good site.

The site is very pleasant. It is level and the pitches are very generous. It is situated most conveniently just off the A1M motorway and there is a park and ride nearby.  The facilities are very good and the toilet block has plenty of toilet cubicles, showers, wash cubicles and all are kept spotlessly clean. We didn't find the motorway noise a problem but beware of the pitches around pitch 37.  It looks to be a lovely little enclave - however, it backs onto a little lane where lorries drive down bouncing and rattling and making a lot of noise... on one occasion at 04:30 where as well as the vehicle noise we were treating to a lot of hammering and loud conversations! We will definitely return as despite this we enjoyed our stay. We will just avoid Pitch 37 and its neighbours.

Friendliest Site on the Network

We were apprehensive about staying on this site due to the reports of road noise. I am so glad we chose this site. The site is lovely and the staff very friendly, the facilities are excellent. We have not been on a site before where everyone staying on site was so friendly and chatty. It made for a very enjoyable stay. Durham itself is lovely and a must visit is the Cathedral easily accessible via the Cathedral bus. Access to the A1M proved very useful for traveling both North & South to the numerous National Trust and English Heritage sites. Yes there is some road noise but it didn't impact on our stay in anyway at all. We will return as the location is perfect if you want to tour the area.

Excellent base for the area

Spent 4 nights at Grange. Ideal location for Durham and other areas in the NE. Site is located just off the A1 so it can be quite noisy with the traffic which is our only real complaint, but be be fair the site details do mention this. We pitched at the bottom end of the site which is the farthest away from the main roads. Site is spotless and the wardens are friendly and very helpful.
