Culloden Moor Club Campsite

our pitch was perfectly adequate and the shower and dishwashing facilities inside were spotless throughout. We wouldn't call it a destination site as such, but it's really handy for a visit to Inverness (being on a reliable bus route avoids the headache of finding suitable MH parking in the city). We were concerned there might be road noise overnight from the nearby main road but we weren't disturbed at all. The hefty use of red & white tape to cordon off areas isn't the most attractive, and the shrub beds would've benefitted from a bit of weeding, but it's a campsite, not a bowling green! The motorhome service point was well laid out, though the strict one way system in place necessitated a complete lap of the site from our pitch, as did trying to exit the site!
Disappointing experience at Culloden Moor Club site
After paying the money the site manager noticed the size of our motorhome and said I do not like vehicles over 8.5 meters on site (Even though the club book states up to 9 meters). It seemed to be touch and go as to whether she would allow us to stay at all. She said it was too dangerous to drive such a large vehicle around the site. She then told us that we had be escorted by her team to our pitch. We felt very unwanted on site. In fact I did drive to fill up with water and therefore completed the circuit around the site and found no difficulty at all!
The next day I received a visit from the female site manager who appeared to be visibly upset apparently because she had learned that I had driven around the site unaccompanied. She stated that is was a condition of hers that we could only stay on site if I did not drive my Motorhome around the site unless we were escorted by her team, which is rather an insult about my diving ability.
The Covid precautions were not well thought out and the general appearance of the site was extremely poor and looked uncared for.
We decided to find an alternative site and left early losing money already paid.

Disappointing change
Have used this site twice yearly for some years. Excellent location, used to be immaculate (all be it with a couple of very tight corners). Now has a shabby and neglected air. Grass poorly maintained, weedy pitches and poorly maintained paintwork.Female warden agitated and not coping with the job, agree with previous critical comments.Female toilets (2) overflowing and not checked at 6pm.Not Covid safe and definitely not at all to Club standards. Will not be back.

Could be improved
Stayed here for nearly two weeks after the coronavirus lockdown had been lifted. There was red and white barrier tape in places where it was appropriate, but it was also in lots of other areas that were completely pointless. It did make it feel a bit like a building site rather than a leisurely place to relax. Did it really need to be around the plant pots that were near reception, the biodiversity area, or the rear and side of the pitches to stop people short cutting through?
I stay at a lot of CMC sites and the majority of wardens always say hello if you are passing. I did not experience that here. One lady was very quiet and hardly said anything when being served and her partner chastised me in a manner that was very inappropriate. I forgot to bring the band for the toilet block hook. The point he was making was valid but the delivery of it could have been better and less vociferous.
The use of tokens rather than pound coins in the washing machine was annoying. All the other CMC sites I have stayed at one use pound coins. It meant I had to wait until morning just to get some tokens for the machine. Very annoying.
It must be said also that when I stayed the site was very busy. It was almost full nearly every night. The family next door had a problem with their caravan upon leaving and the other wardens found a socket set for them to use to fix the problem.
Room for improvement
Ideal location for touring this part of the country
Toilet band system was initially shambolic with 5 hooks on the door for bands but after relief wardens arrived this was rectified to 3 hooks for bands No explanation was given to us on arrival re the toilet band system
Grass and hedge cutting, weeding much needed inspire ideal weather for undertaking this during our stay

Wardens are not pleasant.
When I first tried to book this site for myself who is a member, and then a pitch for my daughter and family who had rented a motor home I rang the site to be told that she only had two hands and could not deal with me she then promptly put the phone down on me. This is after trying numerous times to actually get through to the site. Okay maybe she was having a bad day. Later I Phoned again and manage to book the two pitches. Well we arrived now normally at these sites we are welcomed by the most welcoming wardens. Not here she was very sharp and rude and unhelpful. But after telling my daughter and family how lovely these sites are we plastered a smile on our faces and made excuses for her rudeness. Then we decided to use the laundry went to reception and got the tokens etc ( it was the evening ) but after drying our laundry it was still rather wet and We didn't have more tokens my daughter saw the warden Passing by ( 6.30pm)and she asked if when they had a minute if they could let her have a few more tokens Well this was met with quite a rant from the warden, all he had to say was we have finished now but come around in the morning etc No he embarrassed my daughter and made her feel like a idiot. He also stated that he would be going back to office shortly but she couldn’t have any until morning . The wardens here have no manners, no customer care qualities and are obviously in a job that they dislike. This site is lovely but whilst they are here it is one place we will be avoiding.
Excellent stay
Lovely clean site , pitches great , and very friendly staff.
COVID 19 toilet arrangements excellent as everyone given their own band.
We had a very nice time
We arrived on site on 15 July, the day the site opened following the Covid-19 lockdown. The booing in process took slightly longer than normal due to the social distancing restrictions that were in place. A little extra time was no inconvenience to ensure everyone is safe and well.
The site was well laid out and the direction signs were easy to follow. It is on a slight hill so many of the pitches have a slope front to back. Our pitch was close to the shower block and did not have a view. The pitches higher up the site have a view of the hills.
The facilities were what you would expect for a club site although the hot water was cold the first night and morning. A gas delivery sorted this out. The social distancing measures were effective and for most people adhered to them. There were members of the "Great" British public that felt the rules did not apply to them (always seems to be some on a CAMC site) were suitably "called out" by both wardens and members.
The site is very close to the Culloden Battlefield and even though the visitor centre is closed it is still worth a visit. The surrounding area has many places to visit including Loch Ness, Inverness, Nairn (good beach) and Elgin. A trip to Chanonry Point to see the dolphins may also be worthwile. We were disappointed on this trip although, typically, the next day we were told there were hundreds.
I would recommend this site as a good location to visit the surrounding area.
