Not for me

We stayed for five nights on this site in our motor home, having initially booked for seven nights, but unfortunately I didn't feel the love for this site that others apparently do. We of course knew on booking that the site is in woodland, but I didn't realise quite how dense the tree coverage is, and consequently how gloomy it makes so many of the pitches. Admittedly we had little sunshine, but what there was was hard to experience through the tree canopy. If you like a site with lots of space- the pitches are well apart and not in regimented rows - but not worried about having views other than trees, then this site is for you; I found it claustrophobic. The majority of the pitches are on slate 'gravel'. , with very little grass around, which for me added to the gloom - I do think the pictures here of sunny grassy pitches are somewhat misleading and not typical of the pitches . I felt as if we were pitched in a lay-by or in a car park. The site is huge - too huge for me, if you don't pitch near one of the three shower blocks or water access points, you have a fair old trot to one. And the distances quoted for walking into Coniston either along the old railway line or by the Lake - actually through Coniston Hall campsite - are optimistic to put it mildly. The site is well kept and clean, and mobile reception and wifi signal fine where we were pitched,

Large but well kept site

My wife and our two Westies stayed here for 3 nights, we were met with friendly staff at reception and after a brief discussion we went and chose pitch 57, this is a great pitch if you want seclusion in the middle of a large site, it was perfect for us. The site is large but very well maintained, my only gripe is the amount of people who think "Keep dogs on a lead" doesn't apply to them, this was not only on the site itself but also on the beautiful walk into Coniston. The sites facilities were plentiful and cleaned to a high standard by the busy wardens.

A peaceful six nights

Just returned from a very peaceful six nights at the Coppice. The walks directly from the site are brilliant and we definitely will book again. It was all helped by rain-free weather. The staff were very friendly and the facilities were kept very clean. Just two small points:- 1. Our pitch was midway between fresh water points. One was about 100yds away and the other 150yds. a stand-pipe between would have been useful. 2. Reiterating a point raised by another reviewer:- MEN use the toilet brushes. I can't imagine what some peoples houses are like. :-)

Excellent site, highly recommend

Stayed here for 3 nights, for a family get together, wish we could have stayed longer. The site is well spaced out, wildlife and birds thrive here amongst the trees. Just sit back in the sunshine and breath, listening to the bird song, pure bliss. Just one small thing was the cleanliness, no fault of the site staff but more about fellow campers. What happened to leaving no trace ? There were cigarette butt ends on the ground where thoughtless smokers have just dropped them. The other thing, particularly in the gents loos, please use the toilet brush provided. Would just be nice if we all left a site or facility in a way we would wish to find it.

Excellent site

Stayed for 14 nights with twin axle caravan. Absolutely loved it. Easy walks to pubs and villages. Handy for canoe launches on the lake. Only three slight niggles, 1. Toilet blocks can only be accessed by key which is annoying when half asleep and forgotten key. 2. Having a twin axle there are only a few pitches large enough to easily manoeuvre the van without motor movers. 3. Pitches could be made more level.

A good week

We spent 5 nights here last week, great site, nice layout if you like the more secluded style pitches. Handy for lake access and not too far to walk into the village or to one of the pubs signed at the entrance. A few noisy dogs nearby but not a big issue. Be aware of tree sap! Being a relatively new caravaner we maybe could have done with a pitch with less tree cover, although most of those were already taken. Seems that tree sap? is something that doesn't come off the roof and sides of a caravan. Nice brown streaks all over my van. NOT the sites fault, the site is first class. Perhaps sites with lots of tree cover could warn people about the perils of tree sap. If it hadn't rained overnight one night I don't think it would have been an issue as up til then what was falling off the trees just blew off the van and awning. All in all a great site, we'll run and in a great position

Weekend Away

Had a great time on our first visit here. The fish & chip/pizza van on site was a revelation. The best pizza we’ve had in a long time. We’ll come back specially for the food. The site was lovely too.

Excellent facilities

First time on this site, but probably our last. The site is in a good location, mostly smallish areas with limited number of vans which disguises the extent of the site. The wardens were absolutely first class and a credit to the club and themselves, and the facilities were kept in excellent condition. The toilet block nearest to us closed for cleaning from 1.30pm - which is brilliant timing as most people that were leaving to go out for the day had done so, and those going home had gone as well - a far more sensible time to close than the normal mid-morning closures on other sites. Our preference is for more open, grassy sites, rather that the `car-park` style stones needed because of the tree covering, this is the reason why we would go elsewhere. The area is blessed with pubs serving excellent beer and good food, with a really good Indian restaurant/takeaway in Coniston, and loads of good walking to suit all levels.

Lovely site

Arrived Thursday for the Easter break and staff very friendly and welcoming. Large site with hard standing and some pitches a little uneven but in woodland so beautiful and fairly quite. Several toilet blocks all very clean and well maintained and excellent facilities throughout the site. The site is approx mile and half from Coniston village but a lovely walk either through the bottom of the site through Coniston hall past the lake to the village or follow the old railway line near to reception. The village has shops, spar, co-op, pubs etc etc so plenty to go to if you need more than the on site shops provide. The WiFi is shocking however, we were there 4 days and only managed to get on for an hour once. A pizza/ fish and chip van is on site at weekends that is organised chaos and the service was shocking. Very expensive (person front had 2 pizzas, fish & chips, portion of chips was £33 !) .service was that bad several of us walked away. However in General great site, great location and would recommend.
