Our visit was over end Aug/beg Sept
Many of my comments are repeats of other reviews: (1) Pitches not level and not well maintained (2) Too dark and dull - far too many trees, even when the sun shone it made no difference (3) no fun for dogs - could do with a fenced-off field where they can run and chase balls etc for those of us who don't want to climb mountains. I even asked in the TIB for places locals walk their dogs off lead and there aren't any apparently (4) very wet after heavy rainfall, the ground had no way of drying out, even when the sun shone, thanks to the trees
Beautiful location but did not work for me so will not re-visit
I've stayed at Coniston Coppice a few times and it's the lovely trees and tucked-away "cul-de-sacs" that make it such a wonderful place to spend time. The notices around parts of the site explain about the programme of coppicing that is underway on the site in conjunction with the National Trust. I actually think that it's marvellous that the CMC and the NT have made this partnership and we are allowed access to such a lovely area of woodland. Some of us like the wild feel of Coniston, others prefer the groomed feel of the more regimented sites. I think the variety of sites in the CMC means that there is something for everyone. I'll be returning sometime soon!
This is the second time we have been to this site first with a motorhome some years ago and this time with a caravan. It is a large site with lots of cut-de-sacs which can make it difficult to turn round. We found a reasonably level pitch but many are not and just stone laid on the contours of the land.
It's a nice walk to Coniston from the site. Although plenty of places to walk we could not take the dog of the lead as sheep about which is fair but good to take the dog off the lead sometimes. We went early September and a lot of rain over the five days we were there and some pitches were waterlogged. Lovely to see the Robins and hear the owls at night. This site has a lot of tree cover and is great for walkers and easier for small motorhomes. The wardens were fine but on reflection not somewhere we would return to.
we have just returned from 5 nights on this site. It is a big site, but doesnt feel that big as most of the vans are parked in small cul de sac type areas, which is good really. The toilet were spotless, no complaints there, but why do you need a key to access the toilet block, ridiculous if you ask me. However, the site was sodden, there had been alot of rain prior to our visit, but with there being so many over hanging trees, when the sun did come out, there was no way the land could dry out, there was also a spring by the front of our van, so, constant wet feet getting in and out of the car and the caravan and with a dog it was impossible to keep clean, and this was for the whole of the 5 nights we were there.
Location was good, and a lovely walk was to be had a night down to the lake, into the village and back again along the track.
We visited in September, but I am sure that in the summer months the site would be plagued with insects because of so many trees and shrubs.
I dont think we will be staying on that site again for the reasons we have stated.
We stayed here for only one night on our way back from Scotland to Devon. Welcomed by warm and friendly staff and as others have noted, this site is on a hill. Most of the pitches are under trees, and are shaded. We managed to find a level pitch with some sun, when it appeared. We had plenty of rain. The shower blocks are excellent with no push button showers, and the access is by key only! There are a lot of birds around and many were not shy, showing themselves well. Access to the lake is easy from the bottom of the site but it is through a campsite (presumably the reason for the key access to the toilets etc, to stop campers sneaking in!) Arriving to the site from the south is OK, but it is very tight in places if you are arriving from Windermere in a motorhome! Looking forward to the next visit.
We stayed here recently and was blessed with the usual lakes variable weather. Coniston is a lovely village to visit. Dog friendly cafes. The shower block was lovely and clean and we did like the fact it was key entry only. However we were quite miffed at how close our neighbours parked to us. I really didn’t want to see what they were watching on their TV! It was mentioned to the wardens but they saw fit to ignore it despite on every site the 6 metre rule for our own safety, hence we cut our visit short.
This isn't a massive review as overall the site was great. Ideally located for walks alongside the lake or for a stroll into the hills. Coniston is a bit 'touristy' for our liking but that isn't anything to do with the site. As previous reviewers have said, the site isn't flat and unless you pitch near to a toilet block, it can be a bit of a hike if you've left it till the last minute, you may have to run! The toilet door bangs so if you are near that's going to be annoying. Also, you need a key to access the toilets - not sure of the reason really?
We mentioned one of the night lights which illuminate the roadways being faulty and this wasn't ever fixed. This meant that the path to the toilet from our site during the night was extremely dark.
Pizzas are amazing btw!
Only other comment, at the bottom of the site is another camp site. The footpath to Coniston goes through this and over the bank holiday weekend it looked more like a festival site than anything else - quite intimidating with dogs and kids running everywhere, tents and vans parked all over the place, bbq's going off and music blaring from each pitch and rubbish strewn around - definitely not a club site!
We stayed at Coniston Coppice from 4-14th August. The approach from the South is fine, some narrow winding roads but not a problem as you can see oncoming traffic at most points where its narrow. We have been to Devon twice with the van and that is a white knuckle ride so this was easy. The site staff were very welcoming and helpful throughout our stay, including helping us to find a B&B for my parents who had booked their B&B online and when they arrived they had no record of it and no space. Our warden was very helpful at helping to find them a place, giving me a list of local B&B’s.
The site is the largest we have stayed on but felt like a small site, not once did we have to queue for the showers. The other thing we were super impressed with was the timings for the toilet cleans. BRAVO! To the common sense used on this site. CARAVAN CLUB PLEASE NOTE - Most people are offsite at 1.30-2.30 so clean all toilets at this time, not 10.30 in the mornings. If this site can do it, all of them can. Its a pet peeve of mine with the toilet cleans, Im on holiday and dont want to have to be up at daft o clock each morning before the showers close!
One thing I dont think is made clear with this site is that its on a hill, from photos etc it looks a flat site - it really isnt.
Now onto the rain, its the Lakes its to be expected but the hardstanding pitch we were on flooded and our awning floor was soaked. We spent the morning on one of the days fire fighting with the rain running in. We had tarps down then the awning matting then some cheap ikea rubber backed rugs down and it came thro the lot. It was horrendous at times & very disheartening no matter what we did - it came in, when we eventually left and moved the awning the drainage was ridiculous. Stay away from pitch 219. I suppose we could have moved but the hassle wasnt worth it to be honest and we had no car to tow with due to my hubby putting petrol in his car instead of diesel on the 2nd day - but thats another story.
The pizza van is super, the fish and chips are wonderful from my plaice in coniston. The watersports centre is great but expensive, and no changing facilities (which is crazy). The walk to coniston is 3km (I ran it with Strava) and there are some lovely pubs there esp the Yew Tree.
Its so beautiful in the Lakes and the scenery is absolutely stunning, we would return but not in the van. When it rains and you have a soaked awning and nowhere to dry anything (we left a towel in the drying room for 2 days and it was still damp) it makes you a little fed up.
Beautiful Caravan site in excellent location for lake district. The site is very clean, the showers are excellent, you don't have to press a button every 30 seconds to get water, bliss.
The site is only about a mile from Coniston which as some great pubs for eating out.
Be prepared before you arrive, the shops in Coniston are small and don't offer much choice, so best calling at Booths in windermere to stock up before you arrive.
The pitches are not level so make sure you bring some good quality leveling equipment for caravan.
There are some tight roads to navigate to get to site, but if you take care its not too daunting .
This was our first visit to a Caravan club site, and we were very impressed with standards and will be using more in future.
Gosh this is a large site. If you are near the bottom you are not too far from the water where you can go and swim, kayak or other things. There is a little lane you have to wander down and then go through a campsite to the water. If you are at the bottom then it is a long way back up to the top where reception is. It does have a drying rooms which are helpful but it does not dry anything fast so be prepared.
There is great access to various attractions but the lake district is always expensive one way or another. Be prepared to fork out lots of money at attractions or on parking tickets. There is a lovely walk along by the waters edge of Coniston lake, as far as you want to go. In the woods along the lake walk you will see moss covered tree trunks and stones everywhere, even in the height of Summer. It is quite magical. When it rains you will understand why the moss is so prolific. If you are an outdoors person I would take wellies, waterproofs, walking boots, snorkel, water pump, wet suit, and an unbrella in case it is a nice day with just light drizzle.
We drove over to Scafell Pike from here and it was a fair way, a bit too far really. The views on the way were breathtaking though. Skafell Pike was foggy and if you go up that then there is a stream to cross that can become a river. If it is too deep to wade across in your boots or bare feet there is another alternative but harder route.
A great site in a great position for the lakes and the fells.
