Superb!

Wow, this site is huge but it doesn't feel it due to the way it is broken down into small offshoots of clusters amongst the trees. The route in can be a bit stressful as the roads are narrow and twisting, but that is the Lake District in general and once you're at the site you quickly forget the stress and chill out in this beautiful location. The site is on a slope leading down towards Coniston Water and we chose pitch 232 which is opposite a facilities block in the middle of the site. Just three pitches on quite a large area. It was great, we didn't have far to go up the hill to get out for the day but could also easily walk down to the lake. We're not into water sports so didn't need to be near the lake like some who had brought canoes etc. They issue a key each for the facilities blocks as there is a campsite on the shore of the lake with only the basics and they have apparently tried to use the camc site facilities in the past (better than having to type in a code like at Coed-Y-Llwyn). Wifi was good. Pitch was level and drained well during the downpours we endured (we did have some sun as well by the way). The overhanging trees do create a bit of a Chinese water torture effect when it rains, but there you go. The fish and chips from the van on the Wednesday we arrived was good and saved us some stress. We visited Windermere, Bowness and Ambleside which are all near to each other and with a visit. Ambleside is full of outdoor shops if you need any sort of gear or equipment etc. Also visited Glenridding at Ullswater and Kendal which has lots of shops. We fell in love with the Lake District and will be going back one day. This site will be hard to beat.

Timed it just right

First time staying on this site, wife, me and two dogs. Arrived to be informed to drive around the site and pick a pitch, then return once set up to inform wardens where we were. Decided on pitch number 175, in a cluster covered by trees. The good thing was that there was only us there, the bad was when it rained, it was amplified by the trees but it didn't really bother us. The site is a large site with small areas of pitched grouped together, which, as others have said, make the site seem smaller and more intimate. The facilities are very well managed and the wardens very helpful. The walk into Coniston is about 1.5 miles along a flat path, through the national trust land which is a camping area. The fields have free roaming sheep in them so you need to keep dogs on a lead at all times when in this area. Coniston is a small village with 5 pubs, a couple of shops, a garage, public WC's and a tourist information centre, blink and you will miss it but it is a lovely little place. We stayed Wednesday to Sunday and having walked into Coniston on the Saturday morning, found that on our return, the camping fields and site were very busy, (1st day of school holidays) and two caravans had pitched up in the same cluster of pitches a us. Problem was that on Sunday, I could not get the van off the pitch between the two vans by using the car, thankfully I have a mover fitted so managed to get it off with that, would have struggled otherwise due to the proximity of the vans to the road and a van directly opposite. All in all a lovely site, in a good location virtually next to Coniston lake which we would recommend, perhaps not in the school holidays as we prefer a bit of us time now our 4 children no longer come with us and we have been there and done all that.

Does what it says on the tin.

Fantastic site, with amazing views. The site layout is good with small clusters of pitches which are private and just like being on a CL. Facility buildings are dotted around the site so you don’t have the trek that you sometimes do, they were spotless and the timings for cleaning aren’t at the inconvenient times they sometimes are at other sites. Staff are friendly helpful and were not as officious as some of the other sites. The little shop is well stocked and there was also a little chippy van on Friday and Pizza on Saturday night. Walks to Coniston are easily identified as is the walk back to trover if you wish. Its an excellent venue for an activity weekend or as we did a couple of leisurely walks with the odd hostelry visited. Well worth the visit.

The must visit site

One of the best sites I have stayed on in over 40 years of caravanning. The way the the site is set out in small areas you could easily be on a large CL. The facilities are excellent, the staff could not be more helpful or knowledgable about local attractions. We walked for miles through beautiful woodlands and along the lakeside.

FAB!

A beautiful site, pitches amongst trees and open spaces, tucked away in every nook and cranny. I would strongly advise to ride around the full extent of this site before deciding on your pitch. Nice little herb trough near the site office to enhance any of your home cooked meals. The facilities, as you would expect from a CS site, were all clean although I did think that one of the blocks I used was looking a little tired and could do with some updating. Most of the pitches are relatively flat, but there is very little grass, you will need some strong tent pegs for your awnings. You're given a key to access the toilets and showers as I believe they do have a problem with some people from the neighbouring campsite down at the lake shore trying to use the facilities. A very short walk from the site down to the lake, and some amazing views. We are in a motorhome and just using bicycles to get about. The ride into Coniston is easy and relatively flat, plenty of pubs and shops in Coniston. Small museum in the town with a section on Donald Campbell, we didn't venture in but we did go in the local church where there is a lovely etched glass memorial to him. We cycled round to the other side of the lake as far as Brantwood, this was a little more strenuous but stunning views again. The cycle ride to Torver was also good, mainly on cycle paths with the bonus of a delightful pub, The Church House Inn, at the end of the journey (small CL site also here at the pub). We hired an electric boat at Coniston Quay, two hours is long enough to get you to the far end and back in the time. Plenty of areas to launch your canoe, kayak, paddle board etc or if you just wish to sit, swim and take in the views and relax on the grassy banks shared with the sheep. This site is just perfect, sad to leave.

Lovely Site

We have just returned from a couple of nights on this beautiful site. We didn't want to leave. The site is very clean & the pitches are well spaced out. The facilities are spotless. Plenty of places to walk & although it's the largest site we have stayed on it was so quiet. We look forward to returning in the near future. Thank you for an enjoyable stay. Di, Tony & Poppy Rose

A busy weekend but still a peaceful site!

With the promise of some sunshine and warmth it was not surprising the site was extremely busy over this last weekend. However the Lakeland weather did still manage to dampen things somewhat! Given all that the site was really quite peaceful as usual and facilities kept up to standard. Only gripe is no lighting over the wash cubicles if you're an early riser! Easy walking either into Coniston or to Torver on the old railway line or you can add a little more interest by taking the path, again either way along the side of the lake. We decided to try the Wilson Arms at Torver on sunday and can say that the quality and quantity of food was very good. Limited menu but good, with some fine ale too! Then a gentle walk back to round of the day!

Not for us

The location of this site does make it ideal for exploring the Coniston area and for us the distance of the walk was not a problem. As you would expect the lake does get very busy at weekends especially given how many people can pack into the adjacent Coniston Hall site. Yes the facilities are very well maintained and the whole site is well marshalled but it is just the size of it that would put us off returning. It did feel very claustrophobic although having said that it is very quite at night. Just not for us I'm afraid.

Peace & quiet in a beautiful woodland setting in the Lakes.

We’ve just returned from 10 nights at Coniston Park Coppice site & we would have loved to stay longer. The site is probably one of the largest sites we’ve stayed on, but it doesn’t feel that way as pitches are set in small groups in glades. The site location is excellent for access to many of the lakes key towns & attractions and is within walking distance of Coniston village, but we also enjoyed spending time sat on our pitch watching the bird life venture out from the woodland to feed at the edge of our pitch, definitely a site to remember to take your binoculars! The site is well managed and the facilities are well kept. If you appreciate peace & quiet in a woodland setting, but with plenty to do on your doorstep, then we can recommend this site. We’re looking forward to returning to this site in the future.

A lovely site in a coppice location

I cannot understand the previous reviewers comments. It is located in a coppiced area - the title is a bit of a clue - There are trees as one would expect. We did not consider the facilities were spaced too far apart, how close does he/she want them? We thoroughly enjoyed the site and if the weather had been very hot, the shade from the trees would have been pleasant. Hardstandings are by nature gravel of one sort or another. Would he/she have preferred grass pitches which could easily have been waterlogged? I certainly did not consider it claustrophobic. As for the size of the site it does say in the information how many pitches there are so why did he/she book without checking. My wife and I loved the site. We have to agree with the comment prior to the last one that many people think the rule about dogs on leads does not apply to them. Perhaps those people should consider the rule about a 5mph speed limit does not apply and the implication if their dog ran into the road. We would certainly return if it was closer to Dorset.
